I just purchased this board (technically the -HF version), and will see how it goes in a fairly stock small server configuration: * Super Micro SuperServer SYS-5015A-PHF case, motherboard, 200W "Low Noise" PSU * 3.5" to 2x 2.5" HDD drive bracket * 2x 2GB G.Skill DDR2-667 SO-DIMMs * 2x 320GB Western ...

That's why I support the Technological Singularity . I consider it to be the only true option that leads to a better world for all. I certainly enjoy Neal Asher's novels, with his AI run Polity. Sometimes I wonder if it is a bit too much of devil's advocate against Terminator and similar stories, t...

I want to see the forward progress of all mankind, and I doubt that's going to come through political implementations of any sort. My Atom 330 with no optical drive pulls between 32W (idle) and 42W (boot). The difference between an Atom 230 and 330 are negligible. The only problem might be the CD-ROM.

You've selected a lot of quality parts that certainly seem to meet the requirements. The biggest thing that I can see might be a problem is the "expandability" of the system. The Mini P180 case is MicroATX with only 5 base HDD slots. All of the suspension trouble you're going through could be avoide...

I didn't notice anything in that review that criticized the workmanship, but their where plenty of niggley design issues. I had no problems with the wor...

I built a headless server around this case using an Intel Atom 330 Dual-Core MB (D945GCLF2), 1TB WD Green HDD (WD10EADS), and Ubuntu Server 8.04. I was warned about the on-chip fan that came with the MB, so I replaced it with a 40mm Scythe Mini Kaze (SY124010L) without even testing the stock fan. It...

Sounds like these drives wouldn't be so good to use for Linux Software RAID due to their odd power and speed management. It looks like you're using them for that, and the unsupported tool got things working OK... risky.

My thread regarded a 5U server with larger fans, but the same principles apply. Very loud, very powerful blowers with proper room heating, cooling, and humidity control - that's how to keep a rackmount cool.

From what I can tell, the PSU is just a module that plugs into the power distribution board, and the power distribution board plugs into the SAS backplane for the HDDs and the motherboard for all MB-attached components, including fans. It looks like there might be adapters for some of the connectors...

Voiding the warranty might not be too much of an issue, since pretty much anything I do to the computer that isn't blessed by Dell will do so. I'm not sure the MB/components can be relocated to a new case. It's likely a proprietary setup there as well, though I'd have to do more research to be sure....

I'm young and impulsive, and for various other reasons, decided to purchase a true server computer for my small (700 sq ft) apartment. Aside from the power draw (which is a different issue entirely), I've found its noise levels to be... well, I'm afraid for my future hearing ability. The Dell PowerE...
