Re: Replacement PSU fan (140mm)

I've opened the psu and fan(it was indeed a Globe fan). Noise source turned out to be fan blades somehow rubbing against the struts. I removed a spring that was pushing on the bearings and now the fan hangs lower. It's quieter now, tho there's still a bit of bearing rumble and the higher than desire...

Re: Replacement PSU fan (140mm)

I paid for mine almost 70 euros but it was on sale. Normally it costs 100 euros! I don't see the value in buying a new PSU unless switching to a fanless one which is 150+. The only issue with buying a new fan is renouncing the 4 more years of warranty that I've got but my SPCR credentials say "do it...

Replacement PSU fan (140mm)

My SuperFlower PSU fan has never been very quiet but now it seems to have some bearing noise as well. According to a review it runs at 1200 rpm and since I never pull even 100 watts I guess a 900 rpm fan should do. Of course there's also the problem of low starting voltage and also whether a PWM fan...

Even if you opt in it won't install automatically, it just downloads. What I worry at the moment is actually the HDD space the in-place upgrade might take as I only have a 120 GB SSD.

ASRock has a promising new Braswell mobo coming out - N3150DC-ITX. On-board Pentium CPU, 4 Sata ports and integrated DC psu to use with 19V power bricks. http://www.anandtech.com/show/9271/asro ... n-variants

The click and tong are caused by the coupling/decoupling of a electromagnetic relay meant to avoid current surges: http://www.jonnyguru.com/forums/showthr ... post109590
I have it too on my Superflower psu.

If they could squeeze in 4 SATA ports in instead of 2 that would make them great for home servers, especially for a home made NAS.

Re: Scythe Kotetsu - Is there a better fan?

My Kotetsu fan vibrated a lot even at minimum speed. What I did was to ditch the lower fan clip and loosen the upper one so the fan hangs of it rather than being strongly pressed against the heatsink. Also, I've added some homemade silicone pads as pictured below. The difference is dramatic. The set...

Re: noobie needs help

Buying a new case is a complete waste of money if all you want is the HDD noise going away. You should consider putting your HDD in that upper cage, above the horizontal fan mount. If you have some sanitary silicone at home you could improvise pads(5 mm thick should do it) that you can seat your HDD...

Re: Help with 1080p gaming PC shopping list

If you buy the Silencio 550 you'll have to spend money on new fan(s) because the ones included are absolute $h!t. Very clicky, audible even from the other side of the room(the clicking, not the airflow). Also, the fan grill in the front has round punctured holes which are restrictive and make the fa...

Can I control a 3pin fan on a 4pin header?

Or is it at least safe for the motherboard to connect one?

I mostly sing the harddrive blues. My first piece of misbehavin' was when I put our home hdd into my dad's pc at work and by connecting mine I caused the other hdd to fry. Luckily they had another broken hdd of the same make and by a miracle I managed to get the data back by swapping the electronics...

Re: XFX ATI HD5450 - Is DVI-DVI AND HDMI-DVI possible?

You said "HDMI-DVI" the first time so I assumed your card had 1 DVI output and 1 HDMI output in which case my point stands.
If it has 2 DVI outputs then the cable should help you avoid the color/overscan issues altogether.

Re: XFX ATI HD5450 - Is DVI-DVI AND HDMI-DVI possible?

It doesn't matter if you're using the monitor's DVI input or not. As long as you use the video card's HDMI output, the colorspace will be limited if(likely) windows/driver decides you've connected a a TV rather than a PC monitor. Since the monitors are identical it should be easy to notice any chang...

Benq EW2740L - completely silent, including the power brick. Is it common for monitors to make occasional loud "pop" noises after/during use? Re: Thermaltake Core V1 PSU

The core issue is that while I'd like a fanless/silent/semi-fanless PSU, I've bought the case in advance along with an Enermax Triathlor PSU - which turned out to be an ECO version, which does not have the Enermax "twister" fan - which would have been not a problem, if the case did not emit a low-p...

Vegetable oils are not good because they gunk up. My favourite is bicycle chain oil.

Does it decrease engine noise significantly? That's my problem, not seek or vibration noise.

I might try some sort of cardboard enclosure first, if I can find some heatsinks that can stick out and keep the temps ok.

Re: Seagate NAS HDD 4TB

I have the 2 TB version and while I easily got rid of vibration and seek noise with some silicone mounting, the engine noise is quite piercing, in the mid-high frequencies. The case damping doesn't do miracles and enough noise still escapes through the rear exhaust and probably through the front int...

Cooler Master Silencio 352 was on my shortlist but the primitive drive cage prevented me to buy it because I knew I was in for a lot of HDD noise. I got the old 550 instead which had plsatic HDD rails which at least I could replace with some silicone on the sides to get rid of seek noise. Otherwise ...

Re: Need help optimizing my NAS/Mediaserver PC for low power

Xbitlabs made an article a while ago which also touched on the EPU feature.

One HDD consumes about 4-5 watts so there's 20-25 watts that you won't reduce unless you use power management.
