Re: Fractal Design Core 500; PSU and DVD compatibility help
Steve: I meant that I already own both of the mentioned PSUs. Being a cheap SOB and having a 1 PC household, I wouldn't want to buy the Fractal case and just experiment to see if I can make it work. I rebuilt with Skylake and a new micro ATX board only 4 months ago and can't justify the extra expens...

Re: Fractal Design Core 500; PSU and DVD compatibility help
Steve: Thanks for that. I just checked my 2 available DVD burner specs and they are said to be 170 mm deep also, so I should not have any clearance issues. Do you have any comments regarding possible PSU size issues per question 3 in my original post? I don't want to make unwarranted inferences from...

Fractal Design Core 500; PSU and DVD compatibility help
I'm thinking about downsizing to an ITX build as my one and only machine. I've spent a couple of days on research and reviews and need confirmation on a couple of key points. I will NOT be using a video card--strictly integrated graphics. I will NOT be using water cooling. I will be using a traditio...

Re: Clearance issue?? Noctua U12S cooler in Antec Solo II ca
Luca: Thanks for the comment and pointer to the Mugen cooler. Ideally, I'd like to go with lower profile coolers, so I'm also considering the Noctua L12 and the Scythe Big Shuriken 2 B. If I bought the Shuriken 2 B, I'd replace its fan with a Noctua NF-F12, which I already own. I've poured over all ...

Clearance issue?? Noctua U12S cooler in Antec Solo II case
I'm in the early stages of planning a new build--likely after Intel introduces Skylake later in the year. Of course, the processor details and cooling requirements aren't clear, but I will definitely be using an Antec Solo II case. I may want to do some moderate overclocking, so one of the coolers u...

Transplanting current system to ordered Antec Solo II
Hello everyone: I don't post much and haven't in some time, but wanted to run this by the group. Pretty much on impulse, I have just ordered a Solo II—mostly because I got it for $58 (Amazon $108 less $50 instant discount for signing up for new Chase credit card; free shipping). My current system: C...

Re: Why does my SB system use 2x more Watts than in SPCR rev
Russia Man: The figures I quoted are for ALL of those components, using a 330 watt Seasonic. Everything is plugged into a power strip and I plugged the power strip into the Killawatt. I did some more experimenting today and can tell you that the modem and monitor combined take about 28 watts. Also, ...

Re: Why does my SB system use 2x more Watts than in SPCR rev
Per Kill-a-watt, I use about 75 watts at idle with these components: 1 i-5 2500 CPU, using integrated graphics 1 Gigabyte H67A-UD3H-B3 motherboard 1 WD Caviar Black drive 1 WD Green drive 4 GB Crucial RAM (2 sticks of 2 GB each) 1 Seasonic S12-330 power supply 1 Samsung DVD drive 1 NEC 19 inch LCD m...

Re: Which Sandy Bridge motherboard and CPU?
Regarding power consumption on Sandy Bridge CPUs: I am running a non-overclocked i5-2500 with: 1 WD Caviar Black HD 1 WD green HD 1 Samsung DVD burner 4 gb Crucial RAM (2 x 2) 1 Gigabyte H67A-UD3H motherboard 1 4 year old Seasonic SII-330 PSU 1 stock Intel retail heatsink/fan Integrated graphics, no...

Re: Sandy Bridge build report; surprising?
The bundled Intel heatsink will look like one of thesetwo. The fans are not at all standard. Please explain this further, which models of the Sandy Bridge come with which heat sink? The 2500 comes with the smaller one. Not sure, but I think at most only the 2600K has that bigger cooler. And I'm not...

Re: Sandy Bridge build report; surprising?
PWM-fan headers have four pins and regular voltage controlled headers have three pins. Slip Streams are a good choice. So better get the 800 rpm model and have them spin slower. Experiment with the BIOS settings on this one. Did you install whatever software Gigabyte includes with the mainboard? I ...

Re: Sandy Bridge build report; surprising?
What happened is that your new motherboard has a better fan controller. Maybe your old mainboard didn't regulate that exhaust fan at all and it ran on full speed all the time. Yate Loons are quiet fans in comparison to others, but at ~1300rpm NO 120mm fan is gonna be quieter. Air turbulance (the wh...

Sandy Bridge build report; surprising?
I rarely post and hope this is in the right category. I just rebuilt my PC and found it surprisingly quiet compared to its former incarnation and thought I would provide details that may be useful to others. Components on original PC before rebuild: Compucase LX-6A19 mid tower (8 year old clone of A...

Re: Sandy Bridge system for general home use, critiques want
Without the fan cranking up, it should be fairly quiet. Anyone know different? I'd like to hear some pointed comments on that question myself. I'm in much the same position as the OP. I'll be building Sandy Bridge shortly and have pretty much the same requirements. Have you considered and rejected ...

F: Isn't that Silverstone the one that is virtually identical to another case from another supplier at half the price--the only difference being a fan grille that has been cut out or something like that?? F: I looked at the Coolermaster 341, but saw too many comments about general flimsiness and front panel difficulties. Yep, a Core 2 Duo 5200 would be enough. A Pentium II 2.26 would be enough. I currently have a Core 2 Duo 6600 approaching 3 years old. I build at the limits of my budget every 3 or 4...

Chieftec Micro ATX cases?
Does anyone have experience with the micro ATX cases from Chieftec? Apparently they are current models, available with a bunch of different bezels and trim. Since this is my first post, I can't post links, but you can see them at Chieftec's site. Search Ebay or Amazon for "Chieftec" and you will see...
