Re: Intel Core i3-2100 vs. AMD Phenom II X2 565

Since AMD has quad cores and even energy efficient ones in that price range its funny you didn't include any. I won't dispute the fact that the current AMD generation is bad but still some of them are good value and for those interested they allow overclocking without a premium.

I don't get the purpose of this pc: too much cpu power and too little vga muscle.

If you went through so much trouble replacing fans and such why not put a better video card with an Accelero S1 strapped on it and a low rpm spinning fan.

Not too bad results for the half MK-13. :) Pity the price doesn't reflect that. I think the quality difference between it and any Scythe is worth an extra premium but not that much.

Surprised you didn't pair it with a Slim Slipstream.

Looks very nice. I'm hoping this one will beat the Megahalems below 1000 rpm.

I'm glad its heavier because mass is the most important factor in a fanless heatsink. Fingers crossed as this may also work great at heavier loads with more powerful fans.

Cleverly undervolted his cpu would most likely run passively under the NH-D14. Selling the stock fans should sweeten the deal. On the other hand a Megahalems or a Venomous X with any decent fan are great choices. IMHO Noctua is making a big mistake by bundling fans with their heatsinks. If they woul...

Why would anyone choose to fill their case with NF-P12 is beyond me. These fans have absolutely nothing over cheaper quieter fans like Nexus, Gentle Typhoons or Gelids. Even the very cheap Slip streams are a very good choice if you plan to use them below 1000 rpm. Secondly the U12 is not a good heat...

HDT coolers between disappointment or miracle

My friend Ramiro has done it again. This should bust some myths and confirm others. HDT arhitecture was one of the most controversial debate in the world of aircooling. poparamiro took the hotest cpu out there, the nuclear reactor called Nehalem and tried to elucidate the HDT comportament in a wide ...

dev, dev, dev.... How have you missed it again? The age of the HS design is completely irrelevant, and even how good/bad it is hardly matters. The only thing that really matters is that it has neither too high nor too low impedance to airflow, and that the heatsink/heat combination is very r...

Good initiative Mike. The only thing I'm concerned is the TRUE choice for the reference heatsink. Its design is a bit outdated since they got to rev.C by now and they released a new high end model, the Venomous X. Secondly the TRUE might give false results because of the small depth and some high pr...

Mike I couldn't have said it better myself. :) On the Nexus vs Slipstream vs Yate loons the issue is pretty simple: the Nexus is a round edged Yate loon modified by the dutch company. Slipstreams have surprising qualities, the 1200 rpm version for example outperforms the famous Noctua NF-P12 in ever...

As it turns out I own most of the fans mentioned before and since the discussion is about subjective factors I can tell that for me the Gentle Typhoons at around 1000 rpm have the most decent harmonics. I'm not sure how one should judge the Yate loon based fans or the 120mm Slipstreams because sampl...

Ok since this is going nowhere fast let us tackle the tdp issue. :) My biggest gripe with your methodology atm is that is so specific it might be unique. By that I fear the results you are getting are covering a very narrow and almost unpopulated niche: people with high end cpus that buy a heatsink ...

I'm not sure I'm with you on this one Mike. Things changed since your last fan roundup, new products arrived and were well received I don't know if the old Yate loon based Nexus is still a top dog. Sure it hums nicely at 12v but is pretty weak when it comes to putting some pressure behind the air it...

Let me ask you folks something: wouldn't you find it at least funny if someone found the single situation where a heatsink is better than others? This is the case with this review: the combination of the weak Nexus fan and the relatively large Fenrir brought the 212+ in front. I dislike both product...

I actually don't understand where this fear of placing a few FAILED inside a table at the end of a test is coming from. It could at least serve as a warning: yes this product might be acceptable at lower loads but it comes short at higher TDPs. Maybe its a way of being politically correct and respec...

This is probably your worst test to date. At least it should prove to everyone that testing at stock voltage does absolutely nothing for a good product. I mean why would anyone even consider a different heatsink since the 212+ is a mere 3 degrees worse than the best which is also 3 times more expens...

I think its pretty cool you're trying to push a set of values but testing one heatsink at a different set of voltage values takes 10 minutes during every session. I think that's worth the extra relevance you get from that. You can even write a disclaimer about the inconsistency and attach it to ever...

Good job on the review but with a few amendments: the temps you guys are getting are really on the comfortable side so an increase in voltage wouldn't be such a bad idea and could help someone separate the products better. I mean its kinda hard to sway someone towards a Megahalems when something lik...

I wouldn't recommend the HR-01+ for an i7. Its an ok heatsink, I've owned one, works good with 2 fans but loses ground at higher TDPs. The Megahalems or the Venomous X are the best choice if you don't want something NH-D14 big. They all work great with fans bellow 1000 rpm. At current prices, in Eur...

I'm not going to argue about open air vs case testing because theres really no argument. Testing in case adds variables that are far harder to replicate given the sheer number of cases, fans and computer hardware available. Ramiro's testing is done to help someone decide between heatsinks. The previ...

It really depends on what you are trying to cool. Its probably a semi-decent solution for 775 or lower tier AMD but for higher TDP cpus you might want to look elsewhere.

If you are on a tight budget something like the Titan Fenrir is a better choice especially when coupled with a quiet fan.

The difference between NH-D14 and VEX at medium TDP with a silent fan is close to zero. The Noctua pulls ahead at higher volts and with more powerful fans. Considering the weight and volume difference the VEX is a much more reasonable choice.
