Scythe PSUs - any opinions?

Does anyone have any opinion on the Scythe PSUs? Particularly the Scythe Stronger line?

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?mai ... th=15_1127

I ask because they are relatively cheap, with a presumably good quality fan.

It didn't occur with a specific application, would happen in office apps, stats programs, windows environment, games. It happened at both idle and load. Seasonic X-650 - buzzing

I have a Seasonic X-650 and it worked perfectly up until about a week ago. I've had no issues to suggest that the PSU is unstable. Yet.l However, it has developed a strange electrical noise. Buzzing is probably the wrong word for it. What I can liken it to is a sporadic and quieter version of a ligh...

I think you should be right running all of those on the Earthwatts 380. 5770 shouldn't consume more than 120 watts, and even your overclocked graphics card would be consuming less than that.

5770 is just short of a GTX260. GTX260 is significantly better than the 9600GT.

Don't go with a smaller fan. Look at the SPCR recommended fan list. http://www.silentpcreview.com/article63-page2.html Typically a Scythe, Noctua or Nexus fan running at 7v will be a good bet. Although not SPCR tested or recommended, I use Arctic Cooling 12025 PWM fans, because they are cheap, allow...

5870 would be overkill for an HTPC.
5750 is probably more what you need. Saphire have made a Vapor-X 5750, which would probably be more suitable to your needs than a Vapor-X 5870, and would almost certainly run cooler and quieter.

What do you think the possibility of this card running in a completely passive environment will be? (as of the end of the month the only moving part will hopefully be in a bottom mounted Seasonic X-650). Replaced my 4850 because it struggled to run under 100 degrees in 2D mode on hot days (in a comp...

I think for most people it isn't a really big issue. Usually these devices are only hooked up temporarily, and so their noise is not of too much concern. Even if it was a concern, I think it would be hard to achieve. Even my cheap 'astone' generic brand enclosure has almost no vibration. However, it...

I don't think the CPU is the issue though. I wouldn't use anything with a TDP over 65W with your goal though. The issue is that gaming graphics cards consume a lot of power in idle or load. Your best bet, as someone else has mentioned, is probably something like a 9600gt (Green edition), but it lack...

To my understanding, most CURRENT graphics cards do not reduce power usage to very low levels at idle. If you wait for the 5850 to come out, you can expect a fantastic graphics card with idle power consumption ~ 30 watts.

I was wondering if a note could be added to the Corsair HX520/HX620, saying that "The HX450 may not be equivelant to the HX520/HX620". The reason I suggest this is that I know a number of us on these forums bought HX450s because of Corsair's reputation, the performance of the HX520/HX620, and the fa...

my HX450 is loud.
I read here that removing the plastic baffle inside removes most of the noise. Haven't got around to doing it yet.
Honestly, I was disappointed with mine too, and its clearly the most noticeable sound in my system.

My 2 cents worth: steer clear of the passive 4850s, they run too hot, and heat up everything else in the case a lot too.

Hot air rises.
This hot air gets into the PSU if top mounted, increasing its temperature.
An increased PSU temperature (typically) increases the PSU fan speed, increasing noise.
Just my thoughts.

Here are my recommendations: Get a tower heatsink that will fit your case. An E5200 should be easily passively cooled by something like a Xigmatek S1283 (unless you are running at full load for many hours). However, I'm not sure if you can fit one of those in your case. The other problem is that you...

No throughput advantage if you set the RAM divider to 1:1, but the 1066 could allow you to drop the latencies more if you ran it at 1:1.

Cordis, I'd love to hear your impressions on the case acoustically once you've got it. I'd be a sucker too and order one, but I can't find a supplier in Australia - probably just as well, my bank balance can't afford anything at the moment.

I believe the answer is yes the temperatures will be better. By how much? Probably 2-4 degrees is reasonable to expect - not much, but can make a difference to how fast you have to run fans. I'd go with the OCZ Freeze or the AS5.

I guess I just have an ever so slight hesitance about swapping out the fan.

If I was to go down that root which fan would be best (Access to Nexus, Noctua and Scythe).
