Re: Silent Home Server Build Guide

Looks like new WHS is set to drop Drive Extender . Might screw up future plans for home servers. Yup, I saw it on Engadget and came on here to see if anyone was talking about. I had just learned about DE from this SPCR article, and thought it was one of the cooler ideas I had heard of in a long tim...

Re: Puget Serenity Home Edition review

Glad to hear you are making progress! Sounds like their tech support is helpful, which is always nice to hear :) That also sounds like quite a plug for the EVGA GTX 460... My Scythe S-Flex fans are practically inaudible next to my 260 at stock fan control, and it's quiet enough for me now :) Or I gu...

Re: Puget Serenity Home Edition review

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I don't think can't run without my video card as my motherboard doesn't have onboard video. I opened up the case and tried to listen closely to the video card but it's a little hard to tell with all the other fans right beside it if it's the loudest thing i...

Re: Puget Serenity Home Edition review

You might want to try booting up without your video card. My first EVGA GTX 260 had a very noisy fan and was by far the loudest source of noise. After replacement, it is only mildly the loudest :) I was shocked how quiet my system was after pulling the card--so that's why I'm suggesting it to you :)...

So, I thought I'd try out folding for SPCR since I love the site and my core i7 box is generally bored ;) Now I'm trying to keep from getting too addicted... it maybe too late :) Anyway, I'm so annoyed!!! My UPS died this morning and my Linux folding VM came back without an IP address, and apparentl...

How do i check to see if i added the -advmethods flag? I said yes to it during the setup? I'm not exactly sure the answer to your question, but in your log you got "FahCore_a3.exe" required so I think you are on the right track :) That's all I've been getting with my Linux/Mac SMP runs and even tho...

It seems like Intel has had less drama than other manufacturers. The only thing I remember "bad" was they "screwed" G1 owners out of TRIM. I bought my Intel X-25M 80GB's back in March, and I'm certainly happy I didn't wait. Everything is fast now (except the Internet), and it's totally silent when i...

Firmware issues have plagued the 1.5TB and larger drives. For technical reasons I would avoid 1.5TB and 2TB drives and get something with 2 x 500GB platters (1TB total). Do you have any links to share? I tried googling earlier and didn't find anything definitive, other than some trouble with some R...

On the high northbridge temp front, I would just like to chime in that it seems "normal" for the Rampage II Gene motherboard to run in the 70C range for the NB. That's where mine runs in a Silverstone TJ-08. It drops to about 50C if I point a spare 120mm fan at it from the side vent on the case, but...

Nice review; it's nice to see the high quality reviews applied to products that MIGHT not be the best for sliencer purists :) However, I agree with others that seeing the S1 mounted but not reviewed was quite a tease! Thanks for putting so much time in your review. My EVGA 260 sp216's fan makes a slight whining noise at the default of 40% (it's by far the noisest thing in my system) so I'm interested in a third party solution ... This looks like a lot of work, though :)

Anyway, I appreciate all the pictures :)

Oh, and as far as my two cents on waiting for SATA 3 / 6 Gb/sec: The Crucial C300 128GB is $479 at newegg . Two Intel 80GB G2's cost me about $440 for 160GB. Hypothetically, in a 2 drive RAID stripe the two G2's will kick its butt. [ snip ] And that's using data from the Anandtech article I linked ...

I have the same LG GGC-H20L and I agree with Edwood. I even find it's "full speed noise" ripping a CD fairly pleasant for a DVD drive, and I've done nothing special to silence it.

Playing a DVD/BR I find it quite quiet. Too bad it has been discontinued :(

You absolutely DON'T want the Jmicron or Samsung controller unless the price of the SSD is half the price of the Indilinx based drives and you are extremely short on funds. Overrated is such a strong word... But particularly for a quiet setup, I guess I agree :) One thing to consider is how much oomph you need. It takes a lot less power to drive 1280x1024 than 2560x1600 :) Check out this xBit labs page for comparisons of some "lower end" cards with the GTX 260 and 585...

I ended up just reaming the holes out a bit with a power drill. And they fit perfectly now. Pretty easy fix, but I shouldn't have to do that with such an expensive heatsink. I don't know about that. I assume if it's a "stock cooler" the controls and performance are going to be similar, if not identical. Perhaps, or perhaps not. I could use more information about the fan control chip. The first thing I want to know is if I can turn down the fan a lot. Because then I can...

It looks interesting. Fantastic with a 25.9 dbA while under load. The only thing that throws me off is the same dbA while idle. I would want an inaudible idle noise of perhaps 22 dbA or lower. Isn't there a way to lower the fan speeds so that they are inaudible? Is there any indication that the fan...
