Re: X99 silent 4k gaming build

Since you are going for one gpu, iw ould stay with the P183/CP850 combo, once you buy the second i would check if the case is good enough or will you need to bump the speeds of the fans too much. Im buidling a twin GTX970 in a month or so on FT05, that should be as good as it gets for aircooling. A...

X99 silent 4k gaming build

Inspired by the Linus-SPCR video, I'm going to convert my existing i7-920 rig into an X99 beast. My question is -- does the case have enough airflow for SLI? Here's my Newegg shopping cart, before I hit buy... Items from existing build : Monitor: Acer 4k Gsync, plus a Dell 1080p IPS-like monitor for...

Re: Linus does Silent PC ... with a little help from his fri

After reading the mATX build, I wonder if Linus' rear dust filter had any impact. It's small, but if it choked air to the cpu cooler, maybe it cost a few db on load?

Re: Linus does Silent PC ... with a little help from his fri

This was a great video. I've been looking to upgrade from my i7-920 (tired of the slow sata2 & USB2, etc), but Broadwell keeps getting delayed. Good to know a silent build is possible with Haswell-E despite the 140w TDP. The video says 27db is the limit for a "quiet build" label. 24db while gaming? ...

Re: Help plan a NAS with aspirations...

You don't need more than 1G of RAM for a NAS unless you want to use ZFS or some other memory guzzler. Even 1G would be overkill with reasonable software. Nor do you need virtual machines. Actually, OP's future NASpirations sound like he wants a full server. He mentioned serving up virtual machines ...

Re: NAS build - Nexus Prominent 5 / Xeon L3406

Couldn't find any good Linux benchmarks except this one: y-crunch . The L3406 calculates 25m digits of pi in 23.8s. 50m digits takes 51.3s. For comparison: i5-540M laptop 25m @ 32.4s / 50m @ 58.4s i7-920 desktop 25m @ 13.2s / 50m @ 27.2s temps after calculating pi for 6 hours -- 40C for CPU via bios...

Re: NAS build - Nexus Prominent 5 / Xeon L3406

tdr, The Nexus case is as expensive as the P183  Mostly because it's a new case and there's currently only one supplier. I was confused on which way to face the PSU. Google brought me to a MikeC post that suggested upwards. It's totally irrelevant because with a total power draw that will nev...

Is this case noisier than the p183 ?Do you think i could i fit a thermalright hr-02 heatsink into this case? Compare the measurements of the TRUE to the HR02. If it's taller, I doubt it. Which case is quieter? Not sure. My P183 case holds an i7-920 that is a beast to cool down so it's hard to compa...

Re: NAS build - Nexus Prominent 5 / Xeon L3406

There's plenty of room behind the MB. I have a few cables hidden behind there. Even if the Supermicro had different placement, the problem remains. E.g., I had no place to put the cables for the 140mm fan (left side of board). Basically, the choice of Nexus (or Coolermaster) was to have the wiring b...

When you hit the side panels with your knuckles, do they "clang" or "thud"? Nice build by the way. :) Thanks. I just hit the sides and it sounded like hitting thin metal more than hitting a bank vault. It didn't keep reverberating long, but I'd go with clang. The sides aren't screwed on, so it migh...

Ok, system's built and is quiet. The fans hum, but probably will be inaudible when on the ground and the settings are tweaked. It's been running Memtest at a solid 32-33C. Will run mprime next. So, is it true that hot-dogs are difficult to find in Washington DC, or I was just unlucky? I am not from Washington, but I know that "Five Guys" has hot dogs (and hamburgers) and they have many locations in Washington. Five Guys also has killer fries (fresh-cut and twice cooked in peanut oil). Exa...

I'm doing a 5-drive NAS build and went with the Nexus Prominent 5. After looking at dozens of options, this struck me as a perfect fit for my needs. I'll post observations when it arrives Monday. Core i3 530 vs. 550 for silence

I can get the i3-550 for $105 at a local Microcenter. The 530 seems discontinued and is only available in outlets for $140ish, the 540 is $115. What's the best pick for a silent NAS project? Usually, slower/quieter is cheaper, but not here. Supermicro X8SIE/X8SIL Bios options are limited, so I'm not...

I won't be shorting my RAM  I found Intel's technical paper on the i3/i5 capabilities, which states clearly that the processor takes advantage of ECC, but only when used with the chipset found in the Supermicro board. That makes me feel comfortable and accounts for the confusion -- 95% of mot...

I was basing the assumption that ECC would work on this post . This test shows the configuration functions. How do you verify ECC is actually working? The X8-SIE is the same as X8-SIL, just in an ATX board instead of microATX. No reason to go with a smaller board in a giant case -- is there? Supermi...

The new article is fantastic. One question: is there a more appropriate case? I looked at the SPCR reviews of the cases listed as meeting the drive-space criteria, but they appeared to be designed for gaming. I'm inclined to go with something proven, but having a plexiglass side and blue glowing lig...

Re: Silent Home Server Build Guide

FWIW, I stumbled upon this NAS build that had quiet, lots of drives, and ECC ram as goals. Other than the $370 mobo/CPU combo, seems like you could go with most of the rest of the SPCR components.

First, thanks to Mike for posting this. My obnoxiously noisy QNAP NAS is running out of space, and I've wanted a quiet replacement. I will build one of these.
