Re: Might be out of my league

Already have the Corsair CX500V2 in hand That PSU is a fairly low end CWT unit: a cheap power supply with above average regulation and ripple suppression, and a mediocre noise signature (as Corsair requires from CWT). Personally I wouldn't call it silent or even quiet, but if you like it, then we a...

Re: Might be out of my league

any thoughts on the psu noise level? of course, they all say they're silent Which PSU? And who are those "all"? Point taken, will refrain from useless generalizations henceforth. Already have the Corsair CX500V2 in hand, and a Sunbeam fan controller--budgetary concerns trump sonic purity issues for...

Re: Might be out of my league

On what speed are the HSFans running? In the link you gave they are specked for 1600RPM @100%, would think that HSF and case fan @50% would be enough to keep everything cool. And at 800RPM the HSF should be quiet. Edit: read you post again and saw you used the ULNA to put the HSF @1000rpm, I'd try ...

Re: Might be out of my league

Finally installed the Noctua U9B http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608016 and dropped temps about 3C but was dismayed to find the noise level not that much quieter than the AC alpine 64 it replaced. That's a disappointment. It either sppeks poorly of the Noctua or highly or t...

Re: Might be out of my league

I would take one fan off the CPU cooler just keep the one on the right blowing out towards the rear case fan. With the thermal past as long as you have the main central area covered I would not be concerned. With heat pipe coolers I tend to "prime" the gaps in the pipes with paste then I use the 2 ...

Re: Might be out of my league

The 90 degree mounting kit arrived from Austria, just finished remounting. Quieter now. 4C cooler right off the bat too. Questions: Do you think I really need both fans on the heatsink? Or indeed any HSF at all? Applied the "grain of rice" dollop of thermal paste for the remount and noticed that the...

Re: Might be out of my league

Here's a pic of the case, haven't routed the cables yet. I have the HS fans blowing north to south. I don't think of the temps (38C tops atm) as a prob, but the noise level while less than the ac alp64 wasn't as dramatic a drop as I'd expected; possibly there's no provision to mount the HSF east/wes...

Re: Might be out of my league

Now to just very carefully measure inside the case before payday and ordering. It should fit without any issue, but maybe you have to dismantle the possible TAC duct on the side panel (pointless, however). Better, as it won't be cheap at all, give also a look to the bigger brother NH-C14 because, i...

Re: Might be out of my league

Thanks fumino & ces, love this forum! Didn't look at the packaging so carefully as yet, the MB does have some control scheme, smartfan I believe it's called. Just couldn't see that there's any way of getting the three-pin fan to the four-pin header. Adapters included maybe? My budget improved a litt...

Re: Might be out of my league

I've been researching quieter HSF for my low budget build(see specs in first posts above or ask again if you need more info) and stumbled across this Noctua http://www.noctua.at/main.php?show=productview&products_id=32&lng=en&set=1 which I think will fit into my Compucase on an Asus M4A-785M. Re: Might be out of my league

Found a solution of sorts for anyone that's interested. I shelled out the $20 for a Noctua 92mm case fan--(it fit without having to mod the case). http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608005 Hooked up the LNA adapter and that got the noise down to a barely perceptible and thoroug...

Re: Might be out of my league

Thanks for the help folks. Fireflare, I'm stuck with the Alpine for the time being. Budgetary concerns. Luca, I'll look into the recommendations. I think my MB may be just wonky enough so that fan control can't work at all (rather not have to send it back, hassle) so I'm stuck with picking a case fa...

Re: Might be out of my league

Well, I've tried dozens of times from dozens of angles to install & configure fan control via CLI in Ubuntu to no avail. I decided to count that out as a solution. Bought-and installed--an AC Alpine 64 and RPMs and noise levels dropped to within bearable limits. (The stock HSF was only 65mm! Oy!). S...

Re: Might be out of my league

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS so Speedfan I believe is not an option I guess it should not be a serious issue: man fancontrol (8), it usually does better than speedfan itself. Ah, thanks, I'm mostly unacquainted with CLI stuff but will try to pick it up for this. I believe i need to install lm senso...

Re: Might be out of my league

Thanks for the responses. Cool & Quiet AND Smartfan (Qfan, whatever that's called) have been "enabled" in the BIOS. HSF always seems to run at about 2000 though. Maybe I don't really ever stress this system much(?) Forgot to mention I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS so Speedfan I believe is not an option...

Might be out of my league

But this seems like a good place for informed opinions about this, so here goes. I've just built my second low-budget computer for general purpose home use, some browsing & light audio & photo editing. Here's what I've got. a Compucase mini tower w/ psu, Asus M4A785M board, AMD Athlon II X2 245 w/ s...

JamieG, haven't forgotten about this; your advice has been most helpful. I've decided to live with the noise situation for the nonce and installed a fanless Radeon 4350 so we can use this as the primary/HTPC. I'm the only one in the house that notices the CPU fan anyway. So it's on the to do list, j...

Thanks for the help, Jaime--yes, it's a 70mm fan, with (apparently) just the 4 screws fastening directly to the fins of the HS. Even though I built this rig myself I was hoping for less invasive procedures (to borrow medical jargon) than pulling off the mobo to bolt on a new HSF--hence the fan quest...

Thanks, Jamie.

I think I should have clarified my situation.

Temperature seems ok, it's just the noise of the stock HSF that bugs, so I think I can get by replacing just the fan.

Does this seem like a sane course?

And should I be posting in CPU cooling forum? Or Fan forum?

Replacing stock HSF on Brisbane 5050e

Hi there! Built my first rig in May, a very low-budge but useful thing, and have isolated the noisiest factor to be the stock cooling on the CPU: AMD Athlon 64X2 Brisbane 5050e ADH5050DOBOX Obviously I'm not in a gamer or enthusiast mode, but a quieter CPU HSF would help my nervous system out quite ...
