An update on 2 Tb silent hard drives from Seagate Samsung

http://www.silentpcreview.com/Samsung_M9T_Seagate_SSHD

This is a long article from a couple years ago. Has there been any newer reviews for silent normal platter HD's of 2Tb? Or are the finding here still stable.

Re: Recommendations for silent / quiet HDs 1 Tb size

I'm just now ready to set up a Seagate 1tb 7200 which was on deal at Newegg. I have Seagate barracudas in service from other purchases and they do seem noticeably more quiet than any WD. I have not heard a Green yet. Was going to try one from Ebay just to see if 5400 rpm is really the key to getting...

Re: Recommendations for silent / quiet HDs 1 Tb size

I'm stuck with the same decision as you. I saw the new WD blue 5400rpm, anyone has some feedback about them, are they as Silent as the previous green, and did they solve the greens' issues? What were the WD Green issues? Lots of returns on bad product? So called energy saving? In this regard if ene...

Yes this is what I wanted to see.

Thanks for finding it. I was at a loss as to where to start.

Re: Recommendations for silent / quiet HDs 1 Tb size

Just a followup for anyone interested. I looked at the Himuro and it appears to be nothing more than a metal box with some 'cooling fins.' From earlier projects this gave me the idea of housing the loud HD in an old removable drive tray that has a sliding metal lid. I had more of these but couldn't ...

Re: Recommendations for silent / quiet HDs 1 Tb size

I will look into the Scythe products. I use Scythe fans now on both my rigs and have adapted them to use with CPU cooling. Also appreciate your tips on selecting for quiet performance rather than speed. Speed is only needed for cloning backup. In the meantime I have opted for running a box fan on lo...

Yhorens tuntables and other audio hardware

How did SPCR get into reviewing audio?
I just noticed it today since one of my past hangouts was DIY Audio.com which I
consider to be very knowledgeable.

Thorens turntables for instance have gone through significant modding as I recall.

Re: Recommendations for silent / quiet HDs 1 Tb size

Have you done any comparative tests for continuous operation noise-- motors running etc or is this even a sign of bad manufacture? Where you mention the WD Blacks you say pretty much that it is a characteristic of the units regardless of purchase or exchange. That leaves Seagate Hitachi and Samsung ...

Re: Recommendations for silent / quiet HDs 1 Tb size

Simply put: a matter of logistics and space. I have more than one setup on a small homenet.
And the tic tic of the previous HD was intermittent and tolerable.

If I could get by with something in the 750Gb range would an M2 or other format
be less expensive?

Recommendations for silent / quiet HDs 1 Tb size

After getting a WD Black 1 Tb I beleatedly read SPCR to find out they are known to be noisy. Without a lot of explanation, the WD Black 1 Tb 3FZEX I have runs bare outside a case as a bench setup (on a piece of foam) in a room I sleep in. It has become noticeable for this reason with no daytime soun...

CA_Steve wrote:Some older mobos support PWM for non-CPU fans, others don't. It's best to list your mobo model for more help.
The board in question is a Biostar MCP6PB M2+ for AMD.

Please advise and thanks for your reply.

Explain PWM Pulse Wave Modulation for case fans

What is needed at the board or the CPU for PWM? I understand, maybe erroneously that the speed has to do with heat output. My boards are old but I continue to upgrade a piece here and there. These PWM 140 mm fans are reasonably priced now (a Rosewill for $12.00) and I prefer running with fans at slo...

Re: Horizontal server cases: is the backplane attached?

Yes, on the right track here. I noticed this one as well: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811353038 But it doesn't indicate anything about removing a side panel. I appreciate your reply. Maybe if I did a google search and specified removable side I'd pop up with something. Will...

Re: Horizontal server cases: is the backplane attached?

I'll ask this another way:

What is the cheapest case that has a removable _side_ panel that you know of? I at least can deal with this sort of arrangement with one of my swivel top arrangements. Black preferred. (I haven't seen any old white ones out on the curb lately.)

Re: Horizontal server cases: is the backplane attached?

That is a hum dinger alright. A little too rich for my blood. But it does show the layout and attached backplane. Does it at least have a power and reset switch somewhere that the user can get at it? The thing that made the ol' Enlight unique (and no longer available) was the hinging arrangement by ...

Horizontal server cases: is the backplane attached?

This is a question for those who have seen a lot of computer cases for the desktop. I have an old Enlight model where the backplaen is attached to the "ground plane" or bottom where the motherboard is screwed down. Are there any ATX models of case these days that have horzital format like the old st...

Re: Where to get installation hardware for SSD to desktop co

If the main feature of these SS hardwares are OS loading, how long will it be before a thumb drive has the capacity for WinXP? And then how to get that to work? An advanced utility package such as Hirens has 'miniWindows' on it's current dvd release. And there's a process to load it from the thumb d...

Yes if you wait long enough, things will be cheaper, bigger and faster, but how long will you wait and when will you "get on the train"? You could die next week and never experience all of that  And by the time you get what is cheap, it's probably too slow and small compared to everything els...

The picture of the FT02 *is* right side up then? ;-) I wondered if I was looking at it correctly. Where is the solid state drive best used? CAD and audio video editing? Where to get installation hardware for SSD to desktop comput

Please give a hardware vendor who supplies any and all needed adapters for SSD installed to a desktop. As an aside for new builders, it seems that Acer has now incuded drive trays in their desktops which means only the interconnect cables and plugs are needed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSRGhuk3...

Nero DriveSpeed it seemed like it wanted to reset all the time. I don't know if this applies to you, but this statement was made in the blurb on the Softpedia link: Windows 7 users must run it with administrator privileges to be able to save the changes. Nero DriveSpeed A good suggestion. I forgot about that and it's on here already. I opened and closed it a few times and it seemed like it wanted to reset all the time. Re: Silent DVD burners

Perhaps there is a market for a drive that creates a vacuum around the disc before it ramps up the speed. ;) Take any half decent looking unit and keep the speed low'ish whenever noise is important. Consumer drives that are fast and quiet just aren't made. An external drive could more easily be muf...
