Re: Seagate Barracuda Green 2TB & Momentus 750GB

Hmm, I am about to build a bigger NAS and I will be using my Current WD EARS 2TB and couple of other 2TB disks. I can't decide which ones, any ideas? WD have problems with faulty 4K advanced format, load calibration count and timelimited error recovery. Seagate have had problems with their cctl-sett...

I do not think that is the exhaustside. The fans are swept forward and cutting the air like normal aren't they?

Re: please critique my home ZFS build

I will be following this build. Have you considered btrfs? It has matured significantly and, although it is not yet enterprise stable, quite good. Experimented with it a bit and will most likely migragte once it is fully released. I suggest you follow the development, especially if you already consi...

Re: ECC Support (offshoot of Silent Server Build)

I would guess that Tyan and Supermicro are the ones to get for ECC-support since their mobos are actually intended for use in servers. I think I mentioned that I did not contact either of them. Nice, good luck on your build, I am running mine on non-ECC-ram but your setup will surely be less prone t...

Re: AMD 6800 Series + Tech Day in LA

So far, the ones that have had the standard cooler has had the standard mountingholes that are incompatible with a lot of coolers. They can't really use the standard cooler with the pcb when they moved stuff around. As long as AMD doesn't release a new reference cooler for the non-ref 6850 or they m...

Sapphires 6850 seems to have clearance as well:

Re: AMD 6800 Series + Tech Day in LA

So, distance from the display connectors, 6850, 5850, 5870 and with 6870 the furthest. My conclusion exactly. And since the fins on the S1 has to be cut/bent to fit the 5850 but not the 5870, we can conlude that the 6850 will require the fins to be bent further than the 5850 and the 6870 should be ...

Re: AMD 6800 Series + Tech Day in LA

The 5870 costs about 50% more than the 6870 in Sweden so I am pretty set. Just waiting to see whether any shops will have to clear old stocks of 5870 by selling them for less than the retail price of the new 6870s, not very likely but still. Also, the XFX aftermarket warrany is only valid in North A...

Re: Silent Home Server Build Guide

Disabled/Basic/Good/Super/Max/User I have never heard of these different levels of ECC. First, I got all happy that they might have hidden something from me but it is a bit unsettling. What does it mean? A more aggressive errorcorrecting code? What would be the downside to using the Max-setting? I h...

Re: Silent Home Server Build Guide

I understood and believed you once I saw that there were more options. That raises more questions though. I just gave up midway through my research. Does this mean we have to go through all mobomanuals since they are a more direct link to the developers than the actual supportstaff

Re: AMD 6800 Series + Tech Day in LA

Thanks! Really appreciated. Settles it for me

Although now I don't know if I should get a 5870 or 6xxx. The mouningholes are further from the displayconnectors in the 6870 compared to 5870 so the S1 should fit fine. Either one will probably do fine.

Thx again

Re: Silent Home Server Build Guide

Some of them have an option to turn "on" ECC, which really means to turn on ECC-support, which is their way of saying "If you enable this option, your ECC-memory will 'work' (not necessarily in ECC-mode)" Might not be the case with the one you are mentioning, but then again it could. I can not make ...

ECC Support (offshoot of Silent Server Build)

So if we were to split the disucussion, which has 'proper' ECC support? Intel or AMD? I'm guessing AMD? But both Intel and AMD have IMCs now, don't they? I wouldn't call it 'proper'. It is more about the location of the parts responsible. Intel has had their memorycontroller in the chipset (mobo) w...

Re: Silent Home Server Build Guide

Something else worth mentioning. Intel and AMD ECC-support should be separated if this discussion is to continue since one relies on the mobo's memorycontroller and none on the CPU whilst the other relies on the CPU and the mobo to transmitt those signals to the memory.

Consumermobos only, I did not contact Tyan nor Supermicro. I did not ask about chipkill. I got frustrated and mad when one after one they began confessing and I gave up my hopes on ECC

A lot of the discussion in this thread has been about ECC and what does/doesn't support it. Here is a newsflash: IT IS NOT THAT SIMPLE! Re: AMD 6800 Series + Tech Day in LA

Yup, I know it can be done, however, it requires more airflow, aka more noise than a S1 put on the 5850 which would have been enough for me. It was however harder to mount it on the 5850, you had to cut some fins and I decided to wait for the next gen. Thx for the link KayDat, just what I needed Edi...

Re: AMD 6800 Series + Tech Day in LA

Any news on the mountingholes? The aftermarket coolers have had tendencies not to work with the 5850s and lower since their mountingholes are closer to the connectors. The 5870s works fine with most coolers, I just wanted to know if I could resuse my old S1 on any of these? (The 5870 seemed like a s...

It might be more silent in a hotbox but I recon the x650 is more silent in a more realistic case.
