Re: Check out my home-made musical instruments!

Neat !! Thanks for sharing. What material do you use of the drums ? Is it a special material made for that ? Do you mean the drum skins? If so, they are standard drum skins, just like you would use on a rock drum kit. Nothing else sounds as good or lasts as long. I use "Encore by Remo" skins (Remo'...

Check out my home-made musical instruments!

I thought people might like to see this little vid I made of the home-made musical instruments I use with young children in kindergartens, schools and child care centres here in Perth, Western Australia. I don't do performances with the instruments, I do hands-on programs where the kids get to explo...

Lowest spec fanless graphics card????

It's a while since I posted here, but I've got a very specific question to ask re graphics cards. I wish to replace my current Gigabyte 9800GT Silent Cell with another fanless graphics card. I'm not looking to upgrade: I'm looking to downgrade. Specifically I want a fanless card that is totally inca...

I'm thinking I will change the CPU fan just for good measure. I notice some people use PWM while others are just using voltage to control the fan. I have looked and looked for pros and cons of each. So far all I can find is PWM fans can have more motor noise. Are there others? Sorry I'm sure this h...

UPDATE: I also posted this question on KVR, and one person suggested I should try disabling Easy Tune 6, Gigabyte's performance tweaking tool, as this had cured his DPC latency problems with the same MB. Seemed like the easiest thing to try first (I'm a bit paranoid about messing with the BIOS etc)....

DPC Latency - where do I go from here?

I ran DPC Latency Checker on my new i7 860 DAW, and it failed miserably: http://i608.photobucket.com/albums/tt167/outbackyak/DPCLatency.jpg I tried disabling the recommended devices, but it made absolutely no difference. I've disabled Realtek audio, the Firewire controller, the network adaptors, the...

The basic idea of the TriCool fan is a good one - having a 3-way speed switch built into the fan is an excellent idea and is much more convenient than the adaptors that come with Noctuas etc. The problem is in the implementation: firstly the actual fan is not very quiet when compared to some other f...

I don't hear any whining from the F3, but it doesn't get a huge amount of use anyway, since if I'm working on a project I copy it from storage to the SSD to take advantage of the faster disc speeds. Occasionally I stream large sample files from the F3, but I haven't noticed any whine when doing so (...

Well this is the best passive http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/VGA/Products_Overview.aspx?ProductID=3104 Well, I've got one, but I wouldn't necessarily say it's the "best". There are more powerful passive cards (like the 5750), which also uses less watts and runs cooler. And "best" in what sense...

Hi ronrem. Although the primary function of this computer is a DAW it's also my general use/business computer. I live in a tiny flat and there is simply no room for two computers, so this one has to be a "do it all" unit although it's definitely biased towards its DAW functions. I do a little modera...

Yes, I agree that it's time for an update to the Solo. It's a great case (I bought one recently), but with a few simple changes it could be greatly improved and reinvigorate its sales. 1. A single 120mm fan mount at the front, instead of the dual 92mm fan mounts 2. Redesign the door so you don't hav...

You may know this already, but Static Ice is a great Australian computer component search engine. It's not perfect, as it doesn't cover every dealer, but you may find what you are looking for cheaper than at PC Case Gear.

Is the Antec Proto http://www.antec.com/Believe_it/product.php?id=MjM3Ng== the update of the Antec Solo case? i would discourage the use of the solo cases, especially in a 24/7 operation, in part because the dust filter in front is hidden behind a fixed panel that requires you to remove the side of the case in order to pull the front panel off... it's an incredibly stupid design, and the filters are for 92...

If it will fit you'd be much better getting that 5750 over the 9800GT - cooler, much more powerful, and only US$20 more expensive. There's a review here (in appalling English - I think it's been Google Translated), which makes it sound fairly good. I found the dimensions for that 5750 here , and if ...

The F3 is surprisingly quiet for a 7,200 rpm drive. It's suspended, and that certainly helps, as does the fact that it's not my system drive, so it's normally only being accessed if I am streaming samples off the drive. If I listen closely I can hear a very soft "whooshing" sound, but that's about i...

Hi jtcb - I'm not sure about whether the SSD needs to be in the lowest SATA port. The CPU fan needs to be connected to the CPU fan header if you want the motherboard to control the speed of the CPU fan by PWM; for this to work the fan must be a PWM fan, not an ordinary voltage-controlled fan (though...
