But as long as your cooling is good enough to handle the heat, you can still have a silent PC with a hot CPU. It's just a little more difficult.. I totally agree. These chips are not suitable for 'silent' PCs, but they can certainly be used in quiet ones. My current build has a 125w 1055t overclock...

thanks. the Silverstone seems like it would work. Anyone know if a H50 pump will fit in that height? Tigerdirect currently has a coupon on it. After 2 rebates and the coupon, the H50 is only $45 or so. I think it's a better value than paying $20 for the silverstone and I can use the H50 in future bu...

where to find a short inexpensive HSF for Apex MI-008
I just got a Apex MI-008 and Zotac GF6100-E-E off Newegg for a super budget htpc build. Newegg shell shock had it for $50 after $10 rebate so I couldn't resist. I plan on putting in a Athlon X2 5000+ 65watt cpu in it. The problem is finding a heatsink that will fit. SPCR reviews says it only has 40m...

meansizzler how have you managed to mount the Hr03 "upside" down. On all installs I have seen of graphics cards the cooler always faces towards the bottom of the case. Also as someone asked above how many slots does this cooler with a standard 25mm take up!? Thanks in advance Look at 'Type 1 instal...

I have a Sapphire 5770 with TR HR-03 revA in 'reverse' installation so my CPU fan on the Ninja RevB can provide some airflow. No modification was necessary and installation was a piece of cake. With the CPU fan going at 300rpm, the card stays at 36C, then under Furmark burning load, the fan speed in...

I like using Furmark as a stress tester and gpu temperature monitor. Furmark 'burning' mode is as more stressful than most other applications so it's 'worst case' scenario. Furmark makes a really nice temp vs time plot as you stress test. I force my Sapphire 5770 egg-shaped cooler to be at 20% at al...

Have you tried MSI Afterbuner? Afterburner is compatible with non-MSI cards and it allows you to set fan-speed at different core temperatures.

old dog new trick, silencing a 3 year old PC
After many hours of reading SPCR, buying new parts, and tweaking my computer, I can finally say that I am happy with my computer's noise level. I have built my own PC since the AMD Athlon days and came a long way since my Thermalright SK6 and the 60mm 38cfm 6800rpm Delta (aka the vacuum cleaner in y...

An update. I've installed the Rosewill RG430-2 in my case. The case of the power supply heats up considerably now that it's intaking warm air coming off of my cpu heatsink. However, the fan speed is still very low and inaudible in my environment. I really hope this power supply was designed to opera...

My review of Rosewill Green RG430-2, quiet budget 430w psu.
I was in the market for a power supply in the 300-400 watt range. I really wanted the Nexus Value 430 since it got rave reviews here at SPCR, but at nearly $90, it was more than I would like to spend. So I was choosing between these three models: Corsair CMPSU-400CX for $40 Antec NEO ECO 400c for $5...

Got my card and updating with new temperature numbers and pictures! The setup was fine with my existing fans. The GPU HSF does a great job cooling the card. I was able to maintain my fan settings. temperature (delta temp): CPU: 41C idle (+6), 49C load (+5). (Linpack) Case Temp: 30C (+2) GPU temp: 44...

Neat trick. Ram drives sounds risky but perhaps I can use an old memory stick instead. Then again, I've not noticed much HDD noise when browsing except when Vista decides to update the search index, defrag or whatever it's doing. Ah good thinking. I might try that so I don't tie up a portion of my ...

Eliminate HD seek noise when browsing internet using RAMdisk
This might be old news for you SPCR veterans and not applicable to SSD users. But I just found out today how to use a virtual RAMdisk to eliminate hard drive seek noise while browsing the internet! Browsers typically stores data as you browse (cookies, temporary files, prefetch DNS addresses etc) and ...

BFG 9800gt passive with hr-03 rev.A - need how much airflow?
I just picked up the passive BFG 9800gt. Newegg link for reference https://webspace.utexas.edu/cjc539/BFG-THERMO-6.jpg This will replace my passive Asus 7600gs. I know it's a power hog with the old 65nm process, but for the price I was getting it ($47 after rebates), I couldn't resist. But now I hav...
