Re: Crash course in Intel processors?

The main difference between the i5's and i7's are Hyperthreading and L3 cache. Some programs really can show the difference in performance, but others show no difference at all. I get i7's just because, but it is a little bit hard to justify the ~$100 price difference. Examples: i7-4770K: ~$350 i4-4...

Re: I have really bad whine from my Seasonic P-520FL

Anecdotal evidence seems to suggest that the platinum series fanless units have a higher rate of abnormal whining. I just sent back my ss400fl2 unit for whining. I have a first-gen x-460 that is dead silent. That being said, some units are perfectly quiet. MikeC got three units, one of which was ver...

It will use the same physical socket, but it will not be compatible with motherboards that were produced for the initial run of Haswell chips. Rumor has it that there will be a Haswell refresh next year, and those motherboards will be compatible with Broadwell chips when they launch. ...searching fo...

Re: no Broadwell product planned for socketed desktop platfo

I believe there was early speculation that Broadwell wouldn't come in LGA form, but Intel later promised that it would. No guarantees after that. Depends on how the market goes. So Broadwell will be similar to Haswell in that there are LGA SKUs, but also at least one BGA SKU (the 4770R SKU is Haswel...

Re: This forum is so quiet and dead

I've noticed it too, and it saddens me to see it. I think a lot of it is that the market really has caught up and matured its quiet offerings. The reason why we needed articles on FanMate2, the 7v trick, and SpeedFan was because there weren't good market solutions for slowing down fans back in the d...

Re: Problem with undervolting new 7950

On the Radeon HD 6xxx series, there were seperate clock domains for idle, media, and gaming. Most software utilities would only edit the gaming profile. I wonder if your card is the same?

Fwiw, on my card I used RBE from TechPowerUp to edit the other domains. But that would require a BIOS flash.

Yes, most pastes have a definite shelf life. As it's not going into a high-performance system, however, I would be tempted to use it anyway and only change it if issues arise.

Re: Dell Recovery partition question

There can only be one active partition per disk. The "active" flag tells the system where the bootloader resides, so it looks like your boot configuration is stored on the recovery partition. Setting the OS partition as active or deleting the recovery partition outright would cause your computer to ...

Re: Intel SSDs - 330 vs. 520 vs. 510

Crucial has had its share of firmware bugs. As the m4 was one of the first SATAIII drives on the market, it's had plenty of time to work out the kinks, and they seem reliable enough at this time. It's not that Intel or Samsung haven't had any bad firmware bugs, either (Intel's 8MB issue and a prepro...

Re: Is this PSU calculator completely wrong?

In a word: yes. Most PSU calculators are very wrong. The reason is that there is a huge difference in the power delivery of a quality PSU and a mom and pop's "Sure, it'll run 1.81 gigawatts" power supply. So they overcompensate to be safe. The hardware you listed could probably run off a 430w power ...

Re: Seasonic 850 Gold run this many drives ?

As long as you have enough SATA power connectors (or adapters), without a doubt the PSU will be OK. Most desktop hard drives use less than 10w when running, and about 20w when starting up. With 14 hard drives, you're looking at a worst-case load of about 280w if all the drives are spinning up at the...

Re: Low power draw dual-core socketed CPU w/graphics?

Depends on how much you want to spend and what you mean by low power. You're not going to find anything more powerful than atom/brazos that uses < 10w of electricity until Haswell comes out. The dual core Ivy Bridge chips use very little energy compared to chips of old, but most will still use about...

Regarding the 3570: If you're not overclocking, I'd definitely go with the non-K version. Besides being cheaper, it supports VT-d (a virtualization technology), whereas the K version does not. If at some later time you did want a modest overclock, the non-K version can oc by around 400MHz, which isn...

Re: HTPC spec - A6-5400k or i3-3220?

Are you planning on using a discrete GPU, or just the onboard graphics? I ask because generally, AMD's graphics have better driver support, which may matter for certain HTPC applications. If you're going to use a discrete GPU, this point is moot. CPU horsepower shouldn't matter too much, though the ...

Re: Ivy bridge + XP = ultra slow?

I found this helpful benchmark: http://www.tomshardware.de/download/Tom2D,0301-26150.html It confirms that Ivy bridge HD4000 really is very slow (much slower than a 1.8Ghz Pentium 4 with nvidia 6200 - low end 64-bit card from 2005). There must be something very wrong with that benchmark then. While...
