Re: Antec P280: Performance One Refresh

Zyrobs, how do you rate the r3 vs the 183? Same value/dollar ratio on both, but since the P183 costs much more, it has a much higher value. In my opinion. The R3 is like a normal average case, loaded with extras everywhere. That's what you should expect. The P183 is like a tank, it's built to be a ...

Re: Antec P280: Performance One Refresh

As a guy who owns both the P183 and the Define R3, I'm heavily disappointed with the P280. The R2/R3 is pretty much a cheap copy of the P18x series, that improved on many parts where the P18x comes short. For the price, it's very good, but it comes off too un-professional and low-quality compared to...

P183 problem - vent door lock broken

I have a problem with my P183. I just noticed today, that the plastic door lock on the bottom ventilation filter is broken. It's that small plastic push-in mechanism that clicks and holds when it is pushed in, and releases if you push it in again. I don't even know what it's called properly. Well, i...

Re: 6950 fan never stops?

Reference 6950 idles at 300mhz memory and 150mhz gpu.

20% is the lowest the fan can go. There was an overclocking tool, I think Sapphire Trixx that allowed it to go lower though. But it may be my memory playing tricks on me.

Re: Which cooler for a modded 6950?

Regarding your motherboard, can't you just use angled SATA connectors at the motherboard end? It is what I had to do with mine and they are cleared by at least a cm or 2. I've tried that on another board, the SATA connectors still get in the way so much that they push the card out a little (the pci...

Re: Which cooler for a modded 6950?

Oh, and another test: typical gaming load on my setup doesn't even break 60c (with shader unlock and 6970 speeds/voltage). If I don't overvolt the card and run it at the normal 840mhz max (normal overclock via CCC), running the fan at 7v may just be enough. Well, I suspect I'll only be leaving the S...

Re: Which cooler for a modded 6950?

The only reason I'm not satisfied is because the Setsugen 2 cost quite a lot, for the same price I could've bought something else like the Accelero Xtreme, which would've had a better chance at keeping temps low on smaller airflow.

Re: Which cooler for a modded 6950?

Actually I've just realised that the VRM temps zyrobs and m1st reported were for an unlocked, overclocked (and in some cases powertuned) 6950, Correct. The tests I did were pretty extreme scenarios: shader unlock, increased voltage, overclocking, and complete absence of Powertune (making the card r...

Re: Which cooler for a modded 6950?

OK, with the fan set to 7v I get ~89c and 100c VRM. Not good. It's gonna stay at 12v for summer, or until I find a better fan that can push more air at low noise.

I also tried removing the upper hdd bay to improve airflow, but it made no difference.

Re: Which cooler for a modded 6950?

Go ahead and try the Accelero S1v2, chances are it'll be adequate for your needs. What I do with my card is way above what a regular user would throw at the card, I'm basically running the 6950 as a 6970, 24/7 at near-furmark level loads. A little update. I readded a front case fan, bumped up my oth...

Re: Which cooler for a modded 6950?

GPU-Z 0.5.3 gives me good vreg temp readings. All right. Installed a full size 12cm fan - some Asus sleeve bearing 1200rpm fan, says the air flow is 60cfm. It's a little noisy, though nowhere near as bad as the stock cooler. The topmost sata connector on my GA-p35-ds3 is now blocked, or at least dif...

Re: Which cooler for a modded 6950?

I just installed a Setsugen 2 on my 6950 as well. I used pretty much the same setup as on the picture posted above, except that I used the stock adhesive everywhere, and added one-two extra heatsinks on the bigger chips on the board. Also, I didn't use the stock screws for the VRM sink, but some lon...

Re: My 6950 Power Draw Tests

The card speed hovering is caused by the Powerplay thing, that scales back the card in extreme applications, so the power usage doesn't get extreme. You can give it a plus 10% at the overclock panel of CCC, to make the clockspeeds stable. I'd quite like to get readings with that options as well, if ...

Re: Sound Card: worth the money for me?

You could try using HDMI Out from the Radeon card to feed your amp instead, if it has hdmi input. S/PDIF is very limited in bandwidth, so you are either limited to stereo uncompressed, or 5.1 ac3/dts compressed. HDMI can do uncompressed 5.1 (and 7.1) as well.

Indeed.

Stock cooler gets 90c gpu and 66c vreg at max load (with gpgpu apps), with a shader unlocked 6950.

Re: Changing fan on the HD6950

Okay, I finally finished my Scythe Setsugen-2 set-up. The results are what I would consider bordering on phenomenal. To recap, one card (top in picture) is a 6950 flashed to 6970. The other card is a genuine 6970. The case is a CoolerMaster HAF 932 with great airflow. The modification is a Scythe S...

Re: Changing fan on the HD6950

How are you planning to make it interchangeable, then? Removing the baseplate would pretty much ruin the thermal pads on it, right? If so, you're stuck with it, and if what you say about the fan is correct, then you're stuck with the fan as well. I don't see that many options left if you're stuck w...

Oh, nevermind, the heatsink is screwed to the pcb like any other cooler. For some reason, I thought it was just swinging there in the plastic case. I'm not sure why, probably after-xmas effects (beer, et al.). Based on the pictures, the stock cooler is built up the same way as with the 5850, not cou...

Re: Changing fan on the HD6950

Not a bad idea, but I don't think it would cool the VRMs adequately. Also, I don't think that heatsink is fixed - though I suppose it would be fairly trivial to ziplock it. I am looking for a way to make my 6950 less noisy too, but in a way so I can re-add the stock cooler if needed (it's harder to ...
