It's mostly to shore up the side panel facing me. It bows out just a bit and and if I press down on it, it changes the noise characteristic coming from the case. Might this be vibration or just the way the side panel interacts with the air cavity inside the case?

I actually ordered one from Frozen CPU a few days ago.

Though I don't have any measuring equipment I have the means to subjectively judge the fan (Open air and behind the dust filter of my P183) at 12v, 7v, and 5v and see how it sounds at those levels.
