Re: Big Shuriken fan upgrade - is it worth it?
Hi Luca, I'm using this PC as an HTPC and for gaming on the TV. I need a discrete GPU for both (I use MadVR for watching videos and of course games always need more power on the 3D front). What I've usually done, is that whenever I'm upgrading my desktop, the old desktop becomes an HTPC/gaming box i...

Re: Big Shuriken fan upgrade - is it worth it?
gogleing that case i see two exhaust fans, plus the PSU (or not if youre running it isolated), for a total of 2-3 exhaust fans. I see one intake fan and one small intake vent. -Or am i missing something...? There's a 92mm intake fan on the left side of the case, and two 80mm exhausts at the back, p...

Re: Big Shuriken fan upgrade - is it worth it?
Thanks everyone for all your suggestions. My case is actually an s16V, so the airflow is not all the bad. I'll run through the various tests over the weekend to see where the problem lies, chipset, CPU etc. It has to be heat related, or it wouldn't be cured with faster exhaust fans. I also suspect t...

Re: Big Shuriken fan upgrade - is it worth it?
Thanks guys but I don't really think the overclock is the culprit: 1) This overclock has been rock solid for 5 years now. 2) RAM is at stock speed (SPD anyway - DDR2 1066). 3) Pluging in high power fans or turning on the AC solves the problem - I even ran prime95 for 4 hours. I do however buy the no...

Re: Big Shuriken fan upgrade - is it worth it?
Thanks Luca for all your advice. You're right the s14V has poor airflow. It would work better with a new 65W CPU. Now as to your other points: My core temps always had an 8-10 degrees between them, over several coolers, including watercooling. Just the way this chip is. It was never a problem, since...

Re: Big Shuriken fan upgrade - is it worth it?
Thanks to everyone for your thoughts. Here's some more info as suggested to clarify my situation. The case is a full ATX HTPC case (Origen s14v) with so-so airflow. One 92mm intake fan (I had swapped the original fan with a nexus which is actually a bit noisier but moves more air) and two 80mm exhau...

Big Shuriken fan upgrade - is it worth it?
Hi everyone :) I have a Core2Quad 2.5GHz in my living room pc (HTPC & Gaming). Its a 95W CPU, overclocked to 3GHz but it runs at stock voltage so the heat increase is limited. I'm using a scythe Big Shuriken (rev 1) which worked ok in winter, but as soon as summer temps started to rise, it simply ca...

Mike, You're quite right. I qualified my disagreement with the word "subjectively", but what I should have said to be clearer is that my experience was very different. Indeed I have an strange sensitivity to noise because while I'm used to a quiet environment, I can tune out certain low pitched soun...

I have to say that I (subjectively) disagree with the assessment - I have the H50 on a Quad Q9300 overclocked to 3GHz. Temps were reasonable with the stock fan, but when I combined it with 2 Noctua NF-P12's in a push-pull exhaust configuration, they dropped to 24C degrees at idle and 40C at full loa...

The GT's seem to produce more static pressure and less noise than any other fan I tested with my radiator - my core temperatures lowered quite a bit and the noise levels are very reasonable - I hardly notice them. I need to be clear that they are not silent - at least, not the 1850rpm models (though...

Re: Anyone else not liking Gentle Typhoons?
Mine are similarly configured, and behaving much the same. They are indeed odd compared with other fans I've used. At certain speeds they sound wrong, increase the voltage a tiny amount and it the sound improves considerably. I found that with these overall noise is more sensitive to the relative s...

I've been wondering about the BeQuiet USC fans for a while now - the design seems very distinctive but of course sometimes products are all flash and no value. The 120mm models are pretty expensive, about the same price as Noctua NH-P12's which are IMO quite good. Do you have any idea how they compa...

Good call, wish I'd thought of that - common sense really! It really does get up to 35-40C in summer. In the afternoon it can be 45C in the city because of all the heat reflecting off the concrete! Of course temperature in the house is probably around 5C cooler and in summer I often run the AC too. ...

Under load your temp is 50ºC below Tj Max! There is nothing to fix, or make better; you must be bored. Probably true  Thing is I'm still not happy with the noise levels, but when I use super silent components I get stressed wondering if they will cope with the sweltering 40C heat we get in s...

Thanks for all the suggestions! Unfortunately I only have one PWM header on the mobe and need two fans for the radiator... I really want to give the GT's a chance, but they're not available in my country and the cost of shipping makes them a rather expensive bet. That's why I'm trying to collect mor...

Upgrade Noctua NF-P12 to Gentle Typhoon 1850 for radiator?
Hi :) I have a Corsair H50 CPU cooler (simple watercooling for people who don't want a full water setup). I have the 120mm radiator set up with two Noctua NF-P12's in Push-Pull exhaust configuration. My temps are not bad (Q9300, oc'd@3GHz, stock voltage) idles at 22C (Cores are 40-50C) and under Pri...
