Re: Building your own fan controller.

I have a related question, I'm not very electronics minded, though I can solder, heatshrink etc no problems (used to install car audio). I have an amplifier with a noisy 80mm, 24 volt fan. Was wanting to replace with a 120mm Sycthe 500rpm 12v fan. (current draw 0.07amps). Would just wiring it up to ...

Re: TJ08-E, going for near silent

Interesting that you found the 180mm air penetrator noisy. I was considering hacking up my cheap case to fit one in the front but since you say it's noisy... I wonder if it's sample variance as the SPCR review indicated it was 'acceptable' at low speed and with 9-10v. If I may make a critical observ...

Lots of PWM fan questions.

My motherboard's fan control (Asus Fan Xpert) only controls fanspeed via PWM, not voltage. I am hence in the market for PWM fans. I have four options here; Arctic Cooling Arctic F12 (300-1350rpm) (~$21 NZD) (FDB) Scythe Slip Stream (0 -1300rpm) (~$25 NZD) (Sleeve) Zaward Golf Fan G2 (300-1300rpm) (~...

Re: Which tool do you use to measure video card temps?

Furmark will do the stresstesting, display temps (also graph them), display GPU voltage, and also display fanspeed as an RPM and a percentage. In short, one app that will do everything you need for measuring. If you need to actually modify settings - that's when you want to progress to MSI afterburn...

Re: Is there a case that gives me everything? Quiet, cool,

Where is the case located when you're using it? I have a Phantom (old version), which sits on the floor next to me (on my left). Due to the dual fans in the top of the case there is a direct path from the CPU cooler fan to my ear, so would not recommend any case with top fans (such as either the old...

Re: News for 2011-02-15

Easy way around it is to not buy a Sandforce based drive unless you have enough money to buy a 160GB or larger drive. I always thought the "extended capacity" versions were a marketing mistake anyway. OCZ has way to many model numbers in their SSD lines and a few too many SSD lines on top of that. ...

Re: What is involved in replacing CPU cooler?

1. Unplug stock CPU fan 2. (for intel) twist all four pushpins anticlockwise, and pull them gently upwards to unseat them 3. pull CPU cooler upwards (may need to gently wiggle/twist to remove it) 4. remove old TIM (the goop) from the CPU by adding a few drops of cleaning solution (I used Articlean h...

Re: Core i3 530 vs. 550 for silence

The 550 is really the same processor as the 530. It's just binned higher (better quality), hence why they clock it a little higher.

If you got a 550 and underclocked it to 530 speeds they would be indistinguishable in performance and power usage. The 550 would be marginally more reliable longterm.

Andy is completely right. Draining a normal car battery more than a few times will kill it. You want a deep cycle. I did some researching and some Exide deep cycle commercial batteries have a 200 minute reserve capacity @ 20A. (about 240w) (http://www.exide.com/portal/server.pt/community/transportat...

From whatI've been advised here Intel seems to offer slightly nbbetter performance at pres . They always leap frog though I guess. I think that's an understatement. Re: Moving a 4k sector drive from XP to 7

"Doing the partition align with WD Tool" is the same thing that Windows Vista/7 do on a new (i.e. unpartitioned) drive, so there should be no problem when moving to 7. If you go the jumper way Windows 7 will actually misalign the partition if you try to repartition the drive with it. If you keep yo...

Moving a 4k sector drive from XP to 7

I have the option of installing a jumper or doing the partition align. My problem is- that I'll be only using the drive ...

Issue with head parking is not that it does many times (i don't care at all). What i care for and why this "feature" is bad is response time. I've been also checking the Corsair H50/H70 liquid coolers. Check the relevant SPCR review: I mean they should be avoided as noisy (and not an exceptional performer the H50). Yep. Unless lack of space and need for speed clash (e.g. ITX gaming build) then avoid. They are great for that purpose but o...

A lot of people are saying that AMD's Cool'n'Quiet and C1E has a huge impact on speeds. Re: Achieving 6 V from serial connection in practice.

It's not hard to learn how to make electrical joins. In practice, if you are OK hardwiring the fans, then what you can do is: 1. Cut the Ground wire from one of the fans (let's call it A). Ground is usually black. We'll keep the plug for this fan. http://www.marnscda.com/Guide/3Pin12vMB.jpg 2. Cut a...

It depends on the wire gauge on your particular molex. The thinner the wire, the less current it can handle.

As a rule of thumb, if you can feel warmth anywhere along the cable, it's being overstressed.

I know it can affect the CPU fan speed; you can do this with Easytune 6.

Depending on the case the Thermalright fan should be inaudible. Aren't they the same Sony FDB used in Scythe S-Flex? If so, the SlipStream would (at least hierarchically) be a step backwards in bearing quality, and perhaps noise.
