Re: Snooze and lose... Can I raid a DESKSTAR NAS 3TB w/a 4TB

Thanks for this. Will look into drive spanning. I did buy the original 3tb HGST after seeing the numbers in Backblaze and have been happy with it. Understand that server use is different, but was still impressed by the significant difference in reliability. Am kind of dumbfounded at the dearth of an...

Re: Snooze and lose... Can I raid a DESKSTAR NAS 3TB w/a 4TB

Yes, Raid 0 for editing video when I have larger projects that won't fit on an SSD.

Since my post, I've noticed that the 4TB is also discontinued... but still available at Newegg.

Snooze and lose... Can I raid a DESKSTAR NAS 3TB w/a 4TB?

Bought HGST 3TB last year -- which has been used for storage in my old desktop. Was assuming I'd buy a 2nd 3TB to pair in raid after I built the new desktop. But got delayed w/ other things and am only now ready to set up the raid. But I waited too long ... the 3TB version is no longer available. Sh...

Re: New i7-8700K Build... Cooler recommendations? Case?

Thanks. Super helpful. Will check out suggestions... I don't burn that often, so an external BD/DVD/CD burner is looking better to me... also have a disc-less laptop. GRAPHICS... Am curious just to see if integrated 8th gen graphics can play 4K smoothly in a simple timeline in Premiere. Then I will ...

New i7-8700K Build... Cooler recommendations? Case?

New build for Adobe Premiere, Photoshop, Lightroom, etc for small home office, so want to build it as small and quiet as possible. Would welcome any thoughts or recommendations! Pretty sure about most of it, except for cooler and case. CPU: i7-8700k -- to run as is, not planning to overclock MB: MSI...

New i7-6700 4K video rig - Case Suggestions? M.2 specs?

Am doing a new 4K video editing build (Windows 7, Adobe CS6) and wondering if there are any new ideas out there for a smallish, quiet, mATX mini-tower. Also have a question about m.2 storage. Would welcome any suggestions or advice. My current parts list: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/JZDTsY i7-6700K --...

HDDs for 4K Video Editing - Drive Suggestions?

Some years ago, folks here recommended 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F1 drives for my relatively-quiet video editing rig and I have been very happy with a pair of them. But they need to be replaced, probably with 2TB drives. (One Spinpoint is generating errors. And 4K video files are just so much larger tha...

Re: Real expereinces w/ GTX-750ti -- quiet?

Thanks. Very helpful. Turns out that ASUS card I listed w/ the rebate isn't the one with the sometimes passive cooling... it's model ASUS STRIX-GTX750TIOC2GD5 which Newegg sells for for $159. But I'm very happy to pay more for a card that has a silent mode! Missed that feature entirely when I was br...

Real expereinces w/ GTX-750ti -- quiet?

Need to upgrade the video card on an older audio/video editing near-silent build and it seems like the GTX-750ti is a particularly good value. (The current Gigabyle Gt240 has a fan, but it's virtually inaudible at idle even with the case open. All I hear is the quiet swoosh from two Scythe S-Flex 12...

Re: Quiet affordable mini-tower for new haswell build?

Thanks Mr. Spocko, the ACE Ecco 250 looks good -- BUT, can't find a US source and their website http://www.aceofsweden.se gives a 404 Not Found error.

Of course, there's one on Ebay (from the UK) for a reasonable $61... PLUS $241 SHIPPING!

Anyone know if there is a US reseller?

Very useful info. Thank you.

Over the next few days, I'll look for Xeon-compatible mobos and compare pricing/specs for i7 & Xeon combos.

I use Lightroom, Photoshop, Premiere, and on a occasion, After Effects. Haven't yet narrowed down video cards,...

Quiet affordable mini-tower for new haswell build?

Thanks to folks who helped here in 2010, I put together a pretty-darned-quiet video editing rig for about $800 in parts. (An i7-870 w/ a Hyper212+ cooler in a Cooler Master Elite 341 case.) It's been great, but now feels a bit slow with Adobe CS6. Could upgrade RAM and video card, but Sata2 is a bot...

Dumb disk questions: HDD speed for video

Having trouble finding some current wisdom on how much HDD speed I really need for editing modest HD video projects in CS5. Old school says you need (at the very least) dual 7200 rpm drives in raid... but is that still true? Modern drives are so much faster than even a few years ago. I put together ...

Re: New i7-870 Build -- Scythe Fan Problem

Thanks for your replies. The case fan socket does seem to be under-volted... couldn't find any way in the bios to adjust this. Speedfan reports the SFlex800 case fan (after I make it start up w/ my finger) running at about 400rpm -- so half speed. It shows the 1200rpm version on the CPU running at 1...

New i7-870 Build -- Scythe Fan Problem

Many thanks to Mike and others here for advice (some months back) on this system. Got delayed, but finally built it this week for about $800 in parts. From Micro Center: CPU: Intel i7 870 $229.99 Case: Cooler Master Elite 341 $44.99 CPU Cooler: Hyper 212 Plus $29.99 Fan: Scythe S-Flex 120mm 1200rpm ...

Thanks for a lot of great advice and leads. Last questions for me are mostly brand issues. Specs/prices are similar: Motherboard: Gigabyte versus Asus [/b] -- also is there any meaningful difference between H55 and H57?? (Need mATX / 1156 / USB 3.0 / Firewire.) Thanks. That case looks good.

Not planning to overclock, so I assume the stock CPU cooler would keep it cool. But will a Coolermaster Hyper 212 Plus be a lot quieter? (It's $22 at provantage... does it need a different fan?)

Small, quiet i7-860 build for audio/video work for $1000

The only rig I’ve built before was a simple Pentium Shuttle XPC, so would appreciate some advice. Trying to keep within $1000 budget...

Re: Fanless NVIDIA GT240 w/ 1MB?

You're talking about CUDA performance.

Yes, thanks. And CS5 refuses to use CUDA during video playback with only 512 RAM, so 1GB or more is needed for that reason.

Linksys has great customer support
