Re: Dead silent UPS

I also have a CP1000PFCLCD, and I agree that it is silent. It does have a buzzy fan that runs for a while after even a brief power cut. The fan is not loud, but it is noticeable. In the beginning, I almost returned it. It said it was fully charged, but it would completely shut down as soon as it tra...

Re: Does SPCR seem way too obsessive compulsive about noise?

I remember reading a study about how sensitive people are to noise. It was done to determine how airport design affects people living near airports. I read it a very long time ago, so I hope I remember the details correctly. In the study, they were surprised to find a far greater range in sensitivit...

Re: Inaudible HTPC Advice

@leem, I can not hear the Samsung SpinPoint MT2 drive when the system is booting and I am standing next to it. I do not know about the vibration. The drive is mounted using elastic suspension, and unfortunately I do not remember what it was like when I first formatted and tested it as a bare drive. ...

Re: Inaudible HTPC Advice

@Titus: You might be able to mount the PSU upside down, but I am not sure there would be enough room for air flow. If you use a fanless PSU most of the air would probably go through the PSU. That would not work for my setup, but it might work well if you use negative pressure. I am not sure about wh...

Re: South Korea: The Next ‘Free Trade’ Battleground

Ah free trade… Anyone who knows any economic theory understands that free trade has a lot of pros AND cons. In theory, the main advantage of free trade is that it promotes the creation of wealth. This is certainly true; in fact, free trade has been spectacularly successful in creating wealth. If bot...

Re: Looking for an interesting 5.25 bay device

Out of curiosity, I once tried to see what could be mounted in a drive tray. In addition to the devices already mentioned, I found: A mobile rack for swapping disk drives. A drawer to store small items. Stereo speakers. A stereo amplifier. An infrared sensor for a remote control. A drive bay mounted...

Re: News: 80+ Fakes; Gigabyte in Tibet

My parents were some of the first foreign tourists allowed into Tibet and to the north side of Mount Everest. They saw mounds of rubble that must have been magnificent monasteries. I fear though, that it will soon be too late for Tibet. Immigration is a very effective way to make an occupation perma...

Re: Looking for a low profile CPU heat sink.

Thanks, I think that the Scythe Shuriken Rev B would fit.

Have you, or anyone else used it? Can you tell me how quiet is it, and how good it is at cooling?

Looking for a low profile CPU heat sink.

Looking for a low profile CPU heat sink. I am looking for a quiet, low profile (<80mm high), heat sink/fan for an I3-530 CPU. The Big Shuriken is low enough, but it is about 5mm too large on two adjacent sides. The Nexus Low is also too large on one side. What would be the best heat sink, given the ...

I have a 5770 vapor-x. Hopefully it is close enough to the models that you are interested in that my experience is relevant. I found that my 5770 vapor-x was audible when it was idle and quite noisy under load. MSI Afterburner lets you specify the temp. vs fan speed curve. I used it to make my vapou...

It also depends on the topology of your network, and how many people are using it. A local 100mb link could be saturated if Media Extender, network backup and games are being used at the same time.
