Re: Which HDDs models / vendors are most reliable in 2010?

But Samsung F4 7200RPM models with one or two platters are nowhere.... :?

And I am not sure about multitasking and NCQ implementation in Samsung drives...

Which HDDs models / vendors are most reliable in 2010?

I am considering to upgrade my hard drives. Since I only buy 1 or 2 platter design, I think 1TB solutions would be the best choice with 5OOGB platters available today. There are some models using 667GB - 750GB platters, but those are only Green Drives (Caviar Green and F4EG), and one Samsung Spinpoi...

Re:

Always research your drives to know the number of platters Buy 1 platter or 2 platter drives when possible, 3 if you need super high capacity never buy 4 or 5 platter drives . Beware that some drive manufacturers actively try to confuse you by reusing part numbers. Beware that some assumptions abou...

Re: WD 3TB Green released

Yes, but it appears the BIOS will still limit the boot disk size to 2.19TB -- from the same article: " To be able to boot from a drive larger than 2.19TB, the BIOS and system drivers need to agree on capacity and layout of the hard drive to boot and operate properly. " Please don't conflate OS supp...

Re:

I have one wd20eads running ubuntu 10.04. Thre is no reason (other than getting annoyed by partitioning problems) to purchase an ears model at this time. My eads does not park the heads so much: Don´t be so sure. All of Caviar Green drives I had did not report any problem with load_cycle_count. But...

Considering AMD 800 chipsets, their TDP vary from 12W (AMD 870) to 25W (AMD 890GX) since the integrated GPU is the most power hungry parts. But TDP does not automatically means higher power consumption. I varies from particular mobo tho another and each implementation influence power consumption mor...

On the Intel LGA1156 platform, since northbrige is completely moved to CPU, Vt-d is CPU feature, not chipset feature. All Corei5 6xx series (dualcore) and Corei7 8xx series (quadcore) and all xeons have Vt-d, no matter what chipset you use. I don't think this is entirely true. As I recall, VT-d req...

If you figure to upgrade more often - why the particular concern about energy efficiency? (Much of the energy use in a computer is in production/recycling, as compared to actual use.) I reuse every piece of hardware somewhere else. And I don't upgrade very often. I just said i think it is beter to ...

Power effient Desktop/Workstation for Virtualization

I am considering new system with virtualization in mind. The system should be power efficient, so I will avoid Intel LGA1366 completely, and 125/140W Phenoms on AM3 socket. Since both Intel LGA1156 and AMD AM3 have same level of virtualization support, I am open for both AMD and Intel solutions. I p...

In my experience most boards with integrated graphics are a bit touch and go. ..... I've only tried integrated graphics twice and gave up quickly, neither worked. One was G45 and the other was 890gx, note though I wanted to use 2x raid cards as well as integrated, that may have been the problem! Wh...

I received email from Gigabyte tech support. They wrote me, these problem are only chipset related and all of gigabyte motherboards shloud support non-gfx cards in PCIe 16x slots.

What else to say. Asking motherboard vendor support is useless and anoying. :x

Is it only integrated graphics AMD motherboards that have the bug? If it were a widespread problem you'd think somebody would have noticed before now... It is BIOS related problem, not chipset related. Typical user use 1 graphic card and integrated components. Sometimes he adds some PCI or PCIe 1x ...

Yes. I know limitations of Intels IGP. But that is not what I am talking about. There are many motherboards of AMD chipset series 760/780/880/890, that does not suppport non-GPU ad on cards in PCIe 16x slot. None of these chipsets is limited this way, and fully functional mobos exist. The reason of ...

Motherboards with universal PCIe 16x slot for non-GPU cards

It seems to me, most of the manufacturers are idiots, crippled their PCI Express implementation of PCIe 16x slot to Graphics slot only. It is very common that motherboard with RAID or network card in PCIe 16x slot even won't POST. Is there any list of motherboards, that have standard universal PCIe ...
