Re: need a recommendation for a 120mm fan...
Oh, sorry...Asus ASRock Z68M mobo, i7 overclocked to 4.1, some damn big CPU cooler (can't remember which), no graphics card, one SDD and one HDD (a WD Green). Thing runs pretty cool, but there's a hole in the case, so I imagine I should replace it with something.

need a recommendation for a 120mm fan...
...I read the recent review, but came away unsure what to do. The fan in my Lian Li 08 case, which is 120x25mm, has started to become more audible, and I'd like to replace it. Can someone give me a recommendation for something quiet that I can buy from Amazon (I'm placing an order there for somethin...

Re: suggestions for speaker system for my build?
OK, I'm starting to warm up to what you guys are telling me here. Amplifiers, battery-powered speakers...you're really saying that I'm not going to be happy with something that's driven solely by the 3.5mm jack, right? OK...I'll take another look at those orbs, even though they need an amp. Thanks f...

Re: suggestions for speaker system for my build?
Presumably, mzimmers, this is your reference for small? http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2372400,00.asp I don't know about a reference, but minus the subwoofer, those are small enough for me (though I'd prefer smaller. Re: suggestions for speaker system for my build?
Hey, Steve -
You and I don't seem to have the same definition for "small" -- I'm talking something no bigger than my HK Soundsticks, and preferably smaller than that.
I realize that I'll probably be sacrificing sound when I go to such a small package, but I'm OK with that (I think).

Re: suggestions for speaker system for my build?
That's possible...I went into the sound control panel, clicked a few things, and now my front panel audio out is working (it wasn't before). Anyway, I'm still welcoming ideas. I'd still like to go more compact than the A5s that Steve suggested.

Re: suggestions for speaker system for my build?
The green port is the default for a single stereo out. You can try plugging in headphones to see if it will work. The motherboard drivers might even auto-detect which port you've plugged into and route signal accordingly. According to my user's manual, the "lime" port is for a front speaker. I did ...

Re: suggestions for speaker system for my build?
Music, movies and podcast type stuff. I don't think the budget is an issue, as I'm not really interested in top-end. I just want something that I know will work with this mobo.

Thanks for the suggestion. What kind of input do those take? For all my 3.5mm ports, I don't seem to have one for simple stereo output. Do these have a USB option?

suggestions for speaker system for my build?
Hi, all - Earlier this year, with the help of several here, I put together a nice silent system. Now I'd like to look into a sound system for it. My mobo is an ASRock Z68M-ITX/HT. It's got tons of audio connections in the back, and that's frankly got me a bit confused. I'm hoping someone here has so...

need a docking station for HDDs
Anyone with personal experience with one of these? I'm just trying to decide what brand to buy. It needs to handle 2.5" and 3.5", and it would be nice (but not essential) if it didn't use those sleeves (just more parts to misplace).
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Lian Li Q-08 case review
I think I'm going to give up on this. I purchased a SilverStone USB 3.0 card for my PCI-E slot. Not only doesn't the supplied bracket fit the case, but the card juts out too far to close the case cover. Disappointing. I used the 3.0-2.0 adapter that Lian-Li supplied and connected it to one of my 2.0...

Re: Lian Li Q-08 case review
OK, I think I understand now. So, you're connecting the front panel ports directly to the motherboard via the back panel, and you're connecting the receiver via an internal/port adapter cable. Is that essentially it? But, l don't see how you're running your internal cables out the back of your case;...

Re: Lian Li Q-08 case review
Thanks for the reply, faugusztin. So, if I understand your technique, you: 1. split the internal USB cable with the product you linked to 2. attach one side of the splitter to the internal USB 2.0/CIR 3. run the other side of the splitter out the back of the case, and into the USB 3.0 port on the ba...

Lian Li Q-08 case review
On page three, it says: The case has a pair of front USB 3.0 headers but as most motherboards do not have internal USB 3.0 headers, external cables are provided that can be routed through the back and plugged into the back panel. An internal header adapter is included. Really? I just bought one of t...

optical drive for Lian-Li PC-Q08A?
I'm about to buy one of these cases. Their online information isn't too detailed about what kind of optical drive it needs; can anyone shed any light on this? I'm just looking for something simple, since I plan to rarely use it, but I want to make sure it fits, and opens OK, etc. I scanned the revie...

Hi -
I've tried sending a message, and I get a message saying it was sent, but it doesn't show up in my sent folder. It's in my outbox. Do we have a glitch in the system?
Thanks.

Re: building a SFF system for Linux
Well, it's a good thing I didn't jump too quickly on an economy build. So...my boss now tells me that performance DOES matter on this simulator I'm writing (after saying for months that it didn't). So, I'm definitely going the i5 route. Is there a time of year when the manufacturers typically all an...

Re: building a SFF system for Linux
Hi, boost -
I don't particularly care about idle power draw; I just was wondering if that was the particular board that scrooge had in mind.
What about the ASUS board that you referenced makes it a better choice for WiFi/Bluetooth applications?

Re: building a SFF system for Linux
Those sound like fine recommendations, Scrooge. Now, if I'm not mistaken, an "H67 motherboard" refers to a few different products, right? Is this the one I want?
I'm almost certainly going to get a SSD, if that matters here.

Re: building a SFF system for Linux
I'm not planning on writing anything that's going to be multi-threaded. My compiler will be whatever the latest stable release of gxx is for Linux. Again, I don't expect my needs are going to be great; I just don't want to paint myself into a corner by trying to save a few nickels here and there. If...

Re: building a SFF system for Linux
How much do you care about dual-core vs quad-core? Beats the hell out of me. My main concern is not buying something that will become instantly obsolete. I'm willing to invest in headroom if it makes sense. I don't envision this system being heavily taxed, but I don't mind putting a few bucks into ...

Re: building a SFF system for Linux
OK, I don't know which chipset I need. They'll both run the i5 CPU, right?
I read that the H67 supports a faster SATA interface. Does that mean it will read my internal drive faster? That could be worth paying for.

Re: using silent fans to build myself a...
Wow...that 250mm fan looks ideal; I didn't know they made case fans that big. And, it seems pretty damn quiet, too. It says it uses a 4-pin power connector; but I don't think that's definitive (more than one kind of 4-pin, right?)...so, what kind of PSU would you use with that? This could make this ...

A few questions:
1. what is "OC?" You don't mean overclocking, do you?
2. what do you mean by a "speaker stand?"
3. I'm sort of a power supply novice: will I find one with 4 connectors that will match those Scythe fans?
Thanks.

Re: building a SFF system for Linux
I just realized an option that I'd like, and hadn't thought of before: a Bluetooth adapter. I suppose I'm better off in the long run going with a conventional case, in the event that I realize I need something else down the line. (Sorry if I'm sounding fickle here; I'm just trying to avoid any unfor...
