Re: Lowering fan noise by cutting away exhaust mesh ?

Is there air flow into / out of the cupboard / closet? No, not other than through the door. I try to keep it ajar as often as closed, and during night I sometimes leave the door wide-open to circulate new fresh air into the space. I installed a custom fan script for the FreeNAS that keeps all drive...

Re: Cost effective NAS solution

I was more or less in the same situation like you but then upped the ante as I realised I would not be protected against ransomware unless I had backup offsite. So I moved away from the idea of having a server to send backups to, and decided I wanted a server to make backups from, and carry them off...

Re: Lowering fan noise by cutting away exhaust mesh ?

So, here is what I hope will consitute an epilogue: I turns out that opening the door of the R3 case was so efficient that it proved much of the solution to my problems. Temperatures went down 2-3 degrees Celsius. I could lower fan duty cycle to 40-50% (500-700 rpm) and still stay around 36 degrees ...

Re: Lowering fan noise by cutting away exhaust mesh ?

Hi, A "cupboard server" is in my own terminology a server placed in the kitchen cupboard as opposed to in the closet or in the basement. I live in a small flat, and that is basically my only option, if I don't want to listen to it all day long and night. I guess it is the ventilation in the cupboard...

Lowering fan noise by cutting away exhaust mesh ?

Hi, I have recently converted an old FD Define R3 case to a FreeNAS homeserver and stuck it in the cupboard. It is pretty much idling all the time but the cupboard, case and six WD Reds proved a bit more of a challenge than I thought, so I have turned up fan speeds a bit. That of course creates more...

I always thought that vacuuming computers was a serious no-no, since it supposedly creates electromagnetic fields that can short-circuit your components.

Re: Silence the Silverstone 180mm Air penetrator ?

I'll try a FanMate. Right now I have disconnected the fan altogether. Case 44 degrees, CPU 28 degrees in idle. Could be an alternative as well, I guess. Or perhaps add a 120mm exhaust fan instead. Thanks for all input.

Silence the Silverstone 180mm Air penetrator ?

Hi, Just put together a build in the Silverstone Temjin TJ08-E and I have run into an unforeseen problem. The 180mm front case fan (Air Penetrator) is louder than I thought it would be even when switching the case fan controller to low. It's a 3-pin connector so I can't temperature control it either...

Re: New Seasonic G360 bad whining

This is a bit scary. I have bought this PSU but not yet broken the packaging because if I do I can't return it here in Sweden. I originally aimed for a 460 FL for its fanless operation, but then realized when I again read the recommended PSU section about fanless units, that the difference in noise ...

Re: Passive video card without coil whine

Is it possible to enable/disable the dedicated card in BIOS or similar? Many motherboards have an option for detecting the onboard graphics or graphics card first. I don't think this is a good way of doing what you're asking though. Modern graphics cards have tiny power consumption under 2D usage s...

Can you use both your CPU-GPU and a dedicated card at the same time? sure. Is it possible to enable/disable the dedicated card in BIOS or similar? Is the PSU and case noisy in the Lian Li PC-Q02B ?

Hi, I tried to use the search function but found no mention whatsoever about this not-so-new case (weird?) so I'll venture a question: Lian Li PC-Q02B comes with a 300W PSU. Does anyone know if it is a noisy piece of work or not? I am not aiming for a quiet computer by SPCR standards, but it is to b...

fan mounting: rubber grommets vs. screws

Hi,
Is there a noise consideration to take account of when choosing whether to mount a fan (Slipstream 800) with rubber grommets or metal screws?
Or is it just a trade-off between rubber grommets bring simple to install and screws being durable over time?

Thanks!

Re: Slipstream 800rpm and Slipstream PWM?

Hi, Thanks for your replies. First, just so we are on the same page, my primary concern is with noise and getting rid of the "very-gentle-but-still-audible-alongside-low-volume-piano-sonatas-swoosh". It certainly does come from the fan-exhaust but may be augmented by the videocard run at minimum wit...

Re: Slipstream 800rpm and Slipstream PWM?

After moving fans around a bit (actually they are not all the same, but two are 1350rpm and one is 1000rpm), I noticed that Q-fan in Silent mode brings the 1350rpm fans down to around 1000, and the 1000rpm fan is brought down to around 700. I finally put the most silent fan as the exhaust thinking t...

Slipstream 800rpm and Slipstream PWM?

Hi, I am a bit fuzzled by this thing with varying fan speeds. I am throwing out the R3 fans and replacing them with Slipstreams (CPU + front and exhaust). I read very good things about the 800rpm version, but if I get that, will it always spin at 800rpm no matter what? (Asus Q-fan? R3 hardware fan c...

I would advise caution for these cards, a lot of people are having issues playing games, myself included. Maybe I should stay away from this thread because I am only speculating, but could it not be the SSD after all? When you say buzzing I think of the sound that comes for instance from RAM memories or even electric cables outdoors. That kind of electric current buzz, you know? Like when Arnold Schwarz...

I did not vote because I have only experience of the WD2terabyteEARS. I am however very pleased with that one and I can't notice any vibration noise and while I can hear the air turbulence whoosh that comes from the platter spinning if I concentrate, I don't think I would be bothered by it if I remo...

What is your first step when silencing 7200RPM HDDs?

Hi, I am trying to understand how to go about my 7200 HDDs from a noise perspective. I have only owned three in my life so my experience of them is limited and when I recently bought a WD5000AAKS that turned out to sound like a jet engine I got very confused. Kerosene, 1) Are you using any kind of enclosure for your Spinpoint? Regarding the HD6850 - a sweet card it is, aye. Well, see above regarding what looks like ...

What is a decent HDD temperature? Anyone is welcome to share their ideas (since we cannot be sure that...

Re: Sapphire Radeon HD 6850 very silent and not even vapor-x

Yes, 6850 regulates fan speed based on temperature like all decent cards. Hmm, I certainly do not get that impression from my 6850. It was spinning at 76% all of the time as soon as soon as windows boot and GPU temp below 50 degrees and I can leave it sitting without aero in 2D desktop and it wills...

Re: Could my new WD5000AAKS be defective?

For what it's worth, maybe I should specify the swoosh a little bit:
It is clearly distinguishable from the warm swoosh produced by the case fans at slow speed. This drive swoosh is more metallic and "mechanical" in character. But I would not call it whining.
