Re: Help with upgrading Ivy Bridge i5 and Asus P8Z77-V-PRO

But from generation skylake and upwards, it seems the HTPC's future is pretty grim... I don't see that. Efficiency is constantly improving, you get more computing done at less power usage. The future is only "grim" if computing demands increase faster than efficiency. But with for example the IX Co...

Re: Help with upgrading Ivy Bridge i5 and Asus P8Z77-V-PRO

Well. Thanks to all for replying. The quest for a total silent and slick looking monster HTPC has been just awesome with Asus MB and GPU, The Ivy Bridge I5, and Noctua fans. This hardware is more quiet than a mosquito farting. Mostly thanks to SPCR and some good research. But from generati...

Re: Want to help Corsair build the [quietest] case ever?

Hi George. Please make a PC case in the spirit of Antec Fusion MAX, and you got my attention. This case is horisontal. The fans, and the lcd display is no good, but when you replace the fans, and disconnect the lcd this case is perfect. It's a mix of aluminium and steel. It has it's own room for the...

Re: Help choosing a silent HTPC case.

Probably too late, but don't buy them aluminium cases. I have tried Silverstone's and Lian LI. They get hot very very fast, and you will struggle to connect everything inside and still have room for airflow. The only case that can take intense gaming, HD movies, and so forth, and still be cool and w...

Re: Ivy Bridge VS Sandy Bridge

Hi. Just to update this thread. i5-3570K is pretty silent under normal use even with the stock fan from Intel. Although I'm going to buy an aftermarket cpu cooler later. The Asus P8z77-v PRO contains some nifty software too, which let's you tweak and test your internal chassis fans and CPU fans. Thi...

Re: Ivy Bridge VS Sandy Bridge

Don't worry! If you keep within spec you're covered by warranty. Which I never needed even with heavily oced CPUs on air going for years. The power draw of Ivy Bridge is lower than previous generation and the performance is slightly higher. Job well done. Cooling will become a concern in the future...

Vicotnik, thanks for replying.
I see in your signature that you are using a Ivy Bridge i5 3570.
What is the CPU's temperature under normal use? (websurfing, watching a movie and so on)

Re: Ivy Bridge VS Sandy Bridge

Thanks for replying boost. Your answer is pretty worrying. This tells me that the 22nm technology is really not ready for the consumer market. Not if less heat and more silence is something you prioritize. If you were about to buy a new Desktop / HTPC, would the motherboard Asus P8Z77-V PRO, and a I...

Ivy Bridge VS Sandy Bridge

I don't know if this has been asked before, and I cannot seem to find any answer to my questions with Intel. If you don't overclock your CPU: is the Ivy Bridge CPU's generating more heat than the Sandy Bridge CPU's ? And, if I buy the Asus P8z77-v PRO board, will I be able to use Lucid Virtu and Int...

Re: Advice on new silent gaming system

The fanless psu and the 560 have the same guts (other than the fan). The 560 is semi-passive design, meaning the fan won't spin for loads less than ~50% and when it does spin up, it's pretty quiet. I push people toward the fanned version - and then you have some cooling if/when you need it. The Be ...

Re: new HTPC chassis

quest_for_silence: I can undervolt the motherboard in bios. I've done it before sucessfully, so this will solve the problem I guess. Yes, I know,I shouldn't expect the same cooling as the fusion MAX. NSK 2480 IS an awesome case. No questions about it. Will try undervolting and see how it goes. Thank...

Re: new HTPC chassis

Nostalgia: Will defently check out PC-C60 made by Lian Li. Looks very good, and would fit my needs perfectly. I dont' know why I didn't find it. Thanks for the tip! I guess the difference between that one, and Antec MAX is that it has its own room for the PSU. This is one of the reasons why the chas...

I've been unlucky with my Antec Fusion Remote MAX case while trying to install a NZXT external fancontroller inside the front of the case. Hi there :) Do any of you know if you can tweak the RPM of the fans, in this bios release from ASUS? Or in any way tweak the settings so much that the fans would go very slow. If you're gonna have the PC in the livingroom, and you have a place to put it. ( it's pretty big) check out: Antec fusion remote max. Disconnect the LCD cable to the lcd display, (remote will still work)and replace fans with scythe's, and hook them up with rubber grommets. Monster inside, silent out...

Re: Looking for 2 2.5" silent drives to run in RAID0 config

Don't know if anyone here is interested, but the samsung MP4 disk's are very quiet. You cannot hear them working. But I didn't successfully merge them into raid0, because this was too slow for me. I think this is because the builtin chipset on the motherboard isn't the best? I don't know.. any comme...

Re: Looking for 2 2.5" silent drives to run in RAID0 config

after reading up on raid, and how it actually works, I see that it must mount up and "allign" the disks, and load more drivers during bootup of windows. So I cannot expect a fast boot time. As I have used windows for some time now, I think things actually is in order.. hehe.. gonna try to copy some ...

Re: Looking for 2 2.5" silent drives to run in RAID0 config

Silence is the key :) My SSDs are super silent, and I have found the WD800GB AARS drive to be nice and quiet until it is in use - which is handy, as I only use it for games or videos, which are noisy anyway. Good luck with the driver. Yeah, silence is of upmost importance. No doubt! But I have a re...

Re: Looking for 2 2.5" silent drives to run in RAID0 config

I'd like to withdraw comment on that the disk's are lightning fast. They are not. There seem to be some kind of bootleneck here.. They should be WAY faster than my Samsung Spinpoint F1 disk. I'll try to find out if it's windows7's RAID driver's that is causing them to work slow by installing AMD's c...

The two Samsung MP4 2.5 640GB disk's are now online in my Antec Fusion max case, connected in RAID0. Fully supported by windows7, and my Gigabyte mainboard. I put them in SATA position 0 and 1, and im writing from win7 now. The disks are inaudible when working, and when idling. I used some tips from...

Re: Looking for 2 2.5" silent drives to run in RAID0 config

hmm...
So, what you are saying, is that this will be noisy?
what is this from the samsung website and about the disk:

Acoustics
Acoustics Idle 2.6 Bel
Performance Seek 2.8 Bel

What's "bel", compared to decibel? Like 26dB?

cheers!
PS: The disk's are being shipped tomorrow :)

I hope it will be VERY fast. 7200RPM x 2 = 14400 RPM in RAID0 - Striping.

I can then compete with SSD 8)

Yeah replace them. There's only so much one can do with those three speed Antec fans. Try some Scythe Slip Stream 800's for an easy and quick fix. Maybe with a Zalman FanMate and a 3pin Y-cable to ease down both fans just below 12V. Got an SSD drive in there yet? ;) Thanks for the tip mkk :) No SSD...
