Re: Cooling for Antec Sonata III / Q6600
More like the T-Rex from Toy Story! Or maybe a brontosaurus. The last time I installed a processor in a motherboard it was an 8086: fewer pins, not as scary. No, I'm only concerned about figuring everything out ahead of time because it's my work PC and I don't have a backup. Well, I do have my Win98...

Re: Cooling for Antec Sonata III / Q6600
Thanks, Luca. How tricky is it to remove and reinsert the proc? I've heard people not liking to do so with the LGA775.

Re: Cooling for Antec Sonata III / Q6600
I picked up some good deals way back in December and finally might have time to do the installation. - Cooler Master Hyper 212+ - Scythe Slipstream PWM adjustable - Arctic Silver Arcticlean - Arctic Cooling MX-4 So I've read through on how to remove the old HSF, prep. the HS and the processor, apply...

Re: Old power supply with buzzing fan - replace fan or PSU?
An update: I finally had a chance to replace that fan. What a difference. I used a Noctua NF-R8 and the LNA adapter, ran the cable out of the PSU and plugged it into the motherboard. As an only fan in the system, the flow isn't high enough with the LNA to keep the system/CPU at the previous idle tem...

Re: Noctua magnetic bearing -- next to SDRAM in old build
and just FYI, Noctua hasn't magnetic bearing but fluid-dynamic one). Ah, I misspoke in my title. "SSO bearing with an additional magnet" is how Noctua describes it. I paraphrased incorrectly. SDRAM is not based on magnetism and will not be affected by any kind of magnet one might normally encounter...

Noctua SSO bearing with magnet -- next to SDRAM in old build
I have a Noctua NF-R8 (80mm) that I was going to mount in my old PIII/500 (BE6-II) in place of the stock Slot 1 cartridge HS fan. The mounting I've devised would place the fan directly between a SDRAM stick and the heatsink. I was wondering if the magnetic bearing in the fan (it's quite strong) migh...

Re: Old power supply with buzzing fan - replace fan or PSU?
Thanks Vicotnik. I am leaning towards just replacing the fan instead of buying a used PSU that might have its own problems. But even when the fan worked without grinding, it was quite loud. So the next question is which fan to use. After scouring the boards here, it looks like I want to stay away fr...

Old power supply with buzzing fan - replace fan or PSU?
Hello all. I have an old PIII/500 (*gasp*) that I still use (mostly for the 14" scanner attached to it). The fan is going in the PSU (making a horrible racket) and after perusing the site here and reading up on PSUs and fan swaps I was wondering if it's better to replace the entire PSU or just repla...

Re: Slip, Flex or Flow?
Well, all good plans fail when finally implemented. At the store they only had the following in stock: Slipstream 1900 Slipstream PWM+VR 1500 S-Flex 1600 Kama Flow-2 1400 I picked up the PWM+VR since it seemed to have the highest air flow/lowest noise combination of the bunch. The S-Flex and Kama Fl...

Re: Slip, Flex or Flow?
So far I'm able to adjust the CPU fan speed through SpeedFan by setting the PWM mode to "Software controlled". The case fan is not adjusting (I currently have an intake Scythe 500rpm to test it with) and upon reading up on SpeedFan help, it suggests I try other fan headers on the motherboard, which ...

Re: Slip, Flex or Flow?
I guess you may give a look to SPCR review of the Sonata Elite (about same layout of your S-III, they used a CM M700, about same layout of your Corsair): you shouldn't be worried at all, IMO. I'll take a look. Everything else so far has been an eye-opener. IMO it's a shortsighted view, probably due...

Re: Slip, Flex or Flow?
That's what I always thought, that you need an intake fan. The Sonata case might be designed for only an exhaust fan but could that be when used with an Antec power supply? Since I put the Corsair in there with no fan running and that nice big 140mm grill right next to the exhaust fan, I wonder if a...

Re: Slip, Flex or Flow?
Most of your air may end up being draw around the heatsink instead of through it. Typically the rim of the fan defines where air can be sourced from. Plus the center of the fan is the least active area of the fan (and the space the motor takes up may be larger on a 120mm model? not sure about that)...

Maybe, or maybe sometimes 24hrs (or so about) isn't enough to let us aware of. Ha, yeah, I suppose that sounded impatient. Sorry. No, just after posting that and reading yet more forum posts, I was thinking "geez these guys must get tired of us newcomers asking the same questions over and ov...

Re: Slip, Flex or Flow?
Heh, you guys are probably tired of being asked about fan selection, especially between Scythes. Then again, there's a bewildering array of choices... So I think (after more pondering and reading) I'm going to start out simple: 1) 2 Slipstream 1200 (SY1225SL12M) wired in series to get 6v for case in...

Slip, Flex or Flow?
I'm looking at replacing my case and cpu HS fans. I've lost count of the number of articles/posts I've read on fans in general and the various Scythe fans in specific but I've narrowed it down to Scythe fans (noise, airflow, cost and availability). Currently I have: Antec Tricool (on low) for exhaus...

Re: Replacement HSF for eVGA eGeForce 8600GT
Hey thanks, Lawrence, I appreciate the advice.
I went and ordered the Accelero from NCIX also for $15. Plus shipping of course, but it gave me an opportunity to pick up a swack of Nexus silicon fan mounts which also happened to be on sale. Perfect timing!

Re: Replacement HSF for eVGA eGeForce 8600GT
Thanks, Luca. So I'm thinking Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 R2 with a 120mm fan added on, as I don't really need a better video card. Or am I just asking for more work than necessary (ie. installation time vs. component cost)? How easy is it to clean the GPU from the old thermal compound? Any tips or t...

Replacement HSF for eVGA eGeForce 8600GT
Now that I've discovered this site, I'm starting to think of components I can make quieter. I can see it'll become an addiction, but a good one. I'm thinking of replacing the HSF (or just the fan) of my eVGA eGeForce 8600GT. Right now it's idling about 50C (SpeedFan) and in a "typical" day it goes u...

Re: Cooling for Antec Sonata III / Q6600
So there's no inherent downside to using Speedfan over a hardware controller of some kind? ie. it's not harder on the components? Interesting: I discovered that in my bios, the HSF was set to full speed instead of variable, and so was running over 2000 RPM. I changed it to variable and now it's runn...

Re: Cooling for Antec Sonata III / Q6600
Hey, thanks kuzzia. I was busily reading up on fans today and narrowed it down to either the Slipstream SY1225SL12L or the SY1225SL12M with Fanmates. I was collecting all my facts and data first before my next post, but thanks for the confirmation that maybe I'm on the right track! Speedfan shows my...

Re: Cooling for Antec Sonata III / Q6600
Thanks for the ideas. It's RAID1 because I cannot afford a harddrive failure, so I'll be keeping the RAID. Yeah, what you suggest would be nice. I know I'll be doing something similar when I get my next PC, but for now I'm taking the piecemeal approach. I work on my PC so can't afford much downtime....

Re: Cooling for Antec Sonata III / Q6600
I did some reading and found "Smallish LGA775 Heatsink Roundup - Part 2" interesting. Now I know the downside of many of the superior HSFs: you have to remove the motherboard from the case to mount the HSF. I'd really like to avoid doing that (time and I never like moving the components around unnec...

Hi all. New to forum and I've spent a couple of days looking around now that I"ve discovered it (due to finally being tired of my noisier-than-before computer).
