Re: Fanless mini-itx motherboard with a 4x-16x PCI-e slot

... This is the one that imo suits better, its not that expensive, has a PCIe 8x (maybe its 4x electrical), has 5 lans so if either you using them now or later (in case the card burns down), the CPU seems a little faster than J1800, if you need faster than this you will need to go with fans. LAN: 4...

Re: Money, what else?

Thanks for explanations. Is there any chance you could do it in a YT video,, with a demonstration before and after? Maybe someone could donate a noisy part, I could donate the silicone or whatever the paint thing is :). If you can convince somebody to do&upload the video, I'm all in; I even have th...

Re: Money, what else?

How do you apply it? Small paint brush (if coming in bottle; don't forget to get the remover/thinner), or directly from the spray can. Typical painting guide applies: apply a couple of thin layers instead of a thick one. Cover the problem part completely, especially between the part and the PCB(a s...

Re: Money, what else?

Hi lurker, is RTV silicone anything you recommend home users to play with? I would recommend to try conformal coating(polyurethane based) first; surprisingly, in the most cases is enough; it was the go-to solution to silence whining flyback transformers, which wasn't exactly small(up to 15X15X15cm,...

Money, what else?

Coil/capacitor whine is a relatively well studied phenomenon; it can be controlled during manufacturing phase(or later, with warranty issues) with RTV Silicone or conformal coating. But like any extra step during manufacturing, in the race to the bottom, the extra will be the first eliminated. /back...

Re: Not your ordinary application - silent 92mm fan needed

IMO, the noise level isn't the main problem for this particular application; more important would be how constant is the noise level, and how well protected the fan is(ideally both intake/exhaust protected), so almost any 92mm/25mm(thick)@1500rpm with good bearings and covered in fan grills on both ...

Sent them some photographs and hopefully they'll be able to sort me out. I hope that Powercolor will help, it would b...

Re: Blown inductor - repair feasible? (HD3870)

You can mount back the original inductor without the casing, BUT:
1. Do damn good soldering, and
2. Once in place, cover the inductor completely with acid-free RTV.

Re: Blown inductor - repair feasible? (HD3870)

Solder it back, then cover it with RTV or conformal coating(I think the vibration breaks the choke free, so it needs some dampening).

Re: Gigabyte fan controls?

What headers does speedfan let you control? All of them? Looks like the UD3 has the same three headers as the UD7. I'm (voltage)controlling only the CPU header, and distribute the power to all the fans(5XNF-F12), then connect the monitoring signal back to the MB. Side note: according to the spec's,...

Re: Gigabyte fan controls?

The bundled software used for fan control is called Easy Tunes 6; personally, I wouldn't recommend, because is a resource hog - use SpeedFan instead, it's working, but you have to find out the proper setup yourself by trial and error. As side note, I'm using speedfan on a 990FXA-UD3.

Re: Gigabyte fan control for Haswell

Easy Tune 6 is a resource hog. It will cause audio and video playback problems; for details look up "dpc latency checker', run the test with and without ET6, the result will speak for himself. Anyway, there's still an use for ET6(at least for me): run on startup, do the hardware setup, exit, then us...

Re: Does anyone have experience with a SuperMicro X9SBAA-F y

the biggest argument against this particular MB is the memory: ECC SO-DIMM. Approximately, the unbuffered DDR3 ECC SO-DIMM cost double compared to the standard UB DDR3 DIMM. Support for ECC memory is one of the biggest advantages of the Centerton Atom, cost is not the issue, for a server data integ...

The Core i3-2XXX and Pentium G2XXX series support ECC and have integrated graphics. Officially* only the G2XXX Pentiums. If in doubt, consult http://ark.intel.com/ . *Official support means full ECC(RAM+Caches); if ECC is enabled for the RAM(detectable by user), it doesn't means that is enabled for...

What about an Intel S1200KPR + Pentium G2120 combination(yes, it does support ECC)? Idle power isn't too far from the atom, but with way more processing power, and as price should be close. Re: Wiring Dell DA-2 with PicoPSU for standby

The "secret" is in this image: original link.
Summary:
1. Uses the power-on button to start the Dell&PicoPSU simultaneously
2. Uses the power-LED pins from the motherboard and an optocoupler to keep the Dell on
