Re: Will blocking P183's top vent improve cooling performanc

I never did a comparison on mine but after a few days of owning the case I just had to block it up as the top fan was too noisy and leaving it switched off just allowed dust ingress and noise to escape from my CPU heatsink's fan. It might be a little warmer inside but I can live with an extra degree...

Re: Modern video card noise: good enough for SPCR?

Well some of the recent crop of graphics cards do come with custom coolers, some are good and some are not so good but probably quieter than the reference in all cases. It's nice to see cards coming through now with triple slot cooling solutions, it's about time they finally admitted that the amount...

Re: low draw, disable PSU fan Corsair

Be careful going passive on a power supply that is intended to be actively cooled. Even a relatively small amount of airflow can cool components well enough but no airflow at all could be a big problem. I would say swap the fan for something else but doing so may well invalidate your warranty, espec...

Re: Changing fan on the HD6950

I just measured the stock Thermalright heatsinks and they are 7mm high for the RAM sinks and 6mm high for the VRM mosfet sinks. Will have to check but I might not have 12mm+ clearance for the Enzotech either as the cooler is bent at an angle to the board. Honestly changing the cooler on the HD6950 i...

Re: Changing fan on the HD6950

I'm not overly concerned about the VRMs as they are rated to run very hot, indeed the VRM unisink on my 4890 was blisteringly hot to the touch even under idle conditions. I'm thinking about increasing the fan speed curve so that the fan spins up a bit more than 750rpm as this is a primary factor in ...

Re: Changing fan on the HD6950

Aftermarket coolers won't always fit right on non-reference cards. It's not always an issue but there's always that doubt in your mind. Non-reference sometimes don't have dual BIOS so you may have issues unlocking. Some people have bricked their cards. In addition even the ones with quietest coolers...

Re: Changing fan on the HD6950

Brilliant. Was a tad concerned about the VRMs. With my recently installed Shaman using stock fan profile reaches just 730 rpm fan speed at 75 degrees GPU and <90 degrees VReg. Maybe a touch hot but this thing is seriously quiet considering it's running Kombustor. The stock fan sounded like a hoover ...

Re: Changing fan on the HD6950

Your fan connection intrigues me, you say the power is coming from the motherboard ? How ? You can be technical. Basically I've taken the PWM signal from the graphics card, split it into two and fed this to some other fan connectors. http://i959.photobucket.com/albums/ae72/Tealc_wii/PC%20Stuff/mini...

Re: Fan swap on FSP Aurum 700W 80 Plus Gold

Went ahead and did the mod with the Magma. Before. http://i959.photobucket.com/albums/ae72/Tealc_wii/PC%20Stuff/Aurum.jpg After. http://i959.photobucket.com/albums/ae72/Tealc_wii/PC%20Stuff/jobdone1.jpg It looks much nicer now. Speeds are <1000rpm which is great. I ran the speed sense wire into the ...

Re: Changing fan on the HD6950

This is my Asus HD6950 OC (with shaders unlocked but clocks unmodified) and fitted with the Thermalright Shaman. http://i959.photobucket.com/albums/ae72/Tealc_wii/PC%20Stuff/sinks-fitted.jpg I'm not wholly convinced by the Thermalright VRM heatsinks and whether they are efficient enough at low fan R...

Re: Fan swap on FSP Aurum 700W 80 Plus Gold

Thanks guys. I'm going with the Enermax Magma simply because I can't seem to source the Kama Flow 2 in the UK and the S-flex are nowhere to be seen. The Magma is quite a bit lower in rpm so I'm going to monitor temperature differences again and if it's uncomfortably high I will look towards a 1700-1...

Fan swap on FSP Aurum 700W 80 Plus Gold

I'm after a little bit of advise please. I recently got gifted a FSP Aurum 700W 80 Plus Gold PSU which I am happy with in every respect apart from noise. I thought FSP would go with a non aggressive fan profile for this considering the most it will ever need to dissipate as heat is just 70W. I have ...

Re: Fortron Source Aurum GOLD series 400-700w review

I took delivery of a FSP Aurum 700W and notice that the idle fan noise (150W draw at the wall) is somewhat excessive for a 91% efficient power supply. I haven't measured the speed but estimate it around 900rpm as it does make a fair bit of noise, even tucked away in the lower chamber of a P183. I'd ...
