Re: E3 Xeon Motherboard

If you do require ECC, then you could also look at S1200BTSR. It has a tiny gpu builtin (SM712 chip), only vga output. The board has no remote management though. I'm currently experimenting with a DQ77KB and E3-1220LV2. It works perfectly, and can boot without a video card (just need to add a video ...

Re: server with laptoplike performance and power consumption

Hi cloneman Two ideas :) First Have you looked at the Intel NUC lineup (you were not very specific about requirements)? I'm thinking of buying one to use as my general purpose headless vmware server at home. Apparently they are just about to release an i5 version that have plenty of nice features. h...

Re: E3 family xeons, anyone? Low power server..

Hi ces, I'll try  The one big benefit is ECC memory support (which some people value very much). I would also like this, but haven't found a suitable system to meet my demands yet (not even the current consumer level XEON's). This can be seen by the history of this thread. I don't run an XEON...

one 2.5" 5400 for system and maximum four 3TB 3.5" green HDDs, like this http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/3tb-hdd-hard-drive,2982-11.html, disks will be 80% time in idle mode. I think you would have to test it with 3,4 & 5 disks and measure the consumption. But i think it's feasible. It's not th...

Re: E3 family xeons, anyone? Low power server..

There must be a reason most consumers don't buy Xeons... other than lack of availability in consumer channels. Do you know why that might be. I have often wondered... but never really paid much attention to finding out why I might want a Xeon. I guess its just safer running with my fellow lemmings....

Re: E3 family xeons, anyone? Low power server..

Yes i use the same motherboard, to be honest i forgot to look at the power management tab. I have tested so many motherboards were it had no effect. You should check the setting, I think it is almost a 10W drop in idle consumption. It most definitely makes a difference. ok, so it dosn't need a 8 pi...

I wanted to do something similar, just didn't work properly for me :( Do you use VMDirectPath/VT-d? I'm pretty impressed with your idle result on the 1230, I got the the ...

Re: E3 family xeons, anyone? Low power server..

Hi. I tested a 1220l with the same kill a watt meter (are you danish btw), i got 24,8 watts with a 2,5" disk. So i guess the rest must be the psu. Yeah I'm danish :-) I actually ended up ditching the E3 setup completely. There were issues with VMWare/VMDirectPath, more specifically with mapping of ...

low power sata controller

Hi, I currently have 4 x 2TB WD green drives in my fileserver, and I'm thinking about adding more. The problem is that I have exhausted the onboard sata ports, and need to add a very low power pci-e hba (the FUSION350-A-E has an open ended x4 pci-e). You can see system specs in my signature (BOFH). ...

Re: E3 family xeons, anyone? Low power server..

So you didnt go for 1220/1260? No, too expensive and since I abandoned the DQ67EP build, I don't need onboard graphics. When building in the P183 I only worry about idle power consumption (where it is 99% of the time), so no need for a low TDP processor (saving quite a bit of money there). I plan t...

So going for a new direction: S1200BTS (the one mentioned in the beginning of the post) E3-1230 (4-core with hyperthreading) 8 GB ECC memory (KVR1333D3E9SK2/8G) Putting it all into the case I have from my previous build (P183...

Re: E3 family xeons, anyone? Low power server..

Well, my attempt at building a small server in the Fractal Design Array R2 didn't go as well as I had hoped. The stuff did fit, but the hard drive cage doesn't do much about vibrations from HDD's, so it was far from quiet!!! So I have abandoned the build, and are now going a different way with my ho...

Re: E3 family xeons, anyone? Low power server..

One of my colleges have the S1200BTL board, and is quite happy. Not the lowest power system, because of the CPU he chose, and the Intel RMM that the motherboard also contains. Because of the RMM it also boasts a more beefy onboard graphics chip. I still considering the S1200BTS. It have just arrived...

Re: Silencing a quiet server

I don't think a single pull fan will give enough ventilation in the P183, especially when it is to run quiet. First off the bottom chamber needs at least a little bit of airflow to cool the HDD's a bit and the power supply (running 4 hdd's in my bottom chamber). And by using very silent fans it does...

Hi A bit hungover (so beware of spelling mistakes) ;-) But here we go. I think you should just go for making the P183 as quiet as possible. I wouldn't go into active monitoring of the system. The P183 has great potential to be extremely quiet. Below you can see what I have done/plan to do with my P1...

Well. I'm not sure all boards/cpu's are hit by the whine. I think more people would complain if it was all of them that had the issue. All I can say for sure is that the motherboard/cpu I tried had the whine, and it was very easy to hear, even from about 4-5 meters distance. And that a few other peo...

That's asking a lot. I don't think you can get there from here. Well, laptops do run below 10W idle (arrandale and sandy bridge). So it should be possible if some manufacturer would make a motherboard with focus on low power for the mobile CPU/chipset. I have tested the Jetway NF98-QM57-LF, but the...
