Re: New SPCR design & management

I just realized that I haven't visited this site for over half a year as I only just discovered the new design. I'll be blunt; I'm not impressed. While the previous design did look dated, it was very functional and easy to navigate. The new design is anything but that. Obnoxious animations, huge ico...

Re: GTX 1060 Compilation Thread

Gigabyte 1060 6GB, $220.24 shipped after discounts I believe that model is equal to the Palit GTX 1060 Dual, which I happen to own. I would recommend against it for the noise conscious user - with a moderate overclock, mine hits a fan RPM of ~2k and reaches the high 70's (Celcius, of course) during...

The Accelero Mono looks really interesting. I suppose it would be an option for dual fan boards as well.

Re: GTX 1060 Compilation Thread

If you go by TechPowerUp reviews to be able to compare aplpe to apples, its 4db higher at load, still at 32, give or take how my MSI GTX1080 Gaming X was measured by TPU, and to me its quiet, but its up to you, if the price difference its worth a quieter setup. I believe that's the Palit GTX 1060 S...

Re: GTX 1060 Compilation Thread

Has anyone tried the Palit Dual yet? Or can anyone guess how well it will do in a well ventilated case with vertical orientation, like a Silverstone FT02? I'm undecided between Palit Dual and MSI Gaming X. I know that the MSI card is supposed to be superior, and its Twin Frozr cooler gets good refe...

Re: GTX 1060 Compilation Thread

I had originally ordered the plain Gainward 1060 dual fan model, but my order kept getting delayed, so when I saw a local shop with the basic Palit 1060 model in stock at the same price, I went for that one instead. The two models are supposed to be almost identical. It supports passive fan mode, so...

Re: RX 470 Review Compilation thread

TechPowerUp has a review out of the ASUS Radeon RX 470 STRIX OC 4 GB . Power consumption is on par with the GTX 1060, but the GTX 1060 was ~25-30% faster in the titles that they tested, so not nearly as power efficient either. Not a good pick for the acoustically-conscious here as 36dBA@load seems e...

Re: GTX 1060 Compilation Thread

@keif - Thank you for a great rundown! I really have my doubts about the fan if it emits a noticeable howling noise at ~1100 rpm as you say. If the MSI GeForce GTX 1060 Gaming X 6 GB was a bit cheaper, I would be really tempted to pick it up, but it's quite a premium over the EVGA SC (~€356 vs. ~€30...

Re: GTX 1060 Compilation Thread

The MSI GeForce GTX 1060 GAMING X seems superb, but I have a hard time justifyfing its high cost in Denmark (~€363) vs. MSRP (~€295). Snagged the EVGA SC ACX from Newegg today! Got it for $239 shipped after the paypal discount. Excited but I am a little concerned about it though. The temps and fan s...

I ended up grabbing an EARX, which was a very noticeable noise reduction from the 7200.12 that was definitely on its last legs :)

Re: WD WD20EZRX WD20EARX

FWIW, I'm running a WD20EARS in a ReadyNAS Duo and it's fairly quiet - not inaudible, but definitely quieter than the 1TB 7200.12 that it also houses. However, The Seagate 7200.12 has made quite a bit of "buzzing" noise (not sure how to better describe it, but it's pretty obnoxious) over the past fe...

Re: 7850 vs. 7870

Well, I gave in and grabbed the Club 3D Radeon HD 7850 royalQueen (1 GB) for ~149€. Installing drivers proved to be a bit troublesome as I kept getting BSODs 5-10 seconds after Windows had booted to dekstop. I used AMD's own uninstaller to remove previous drivers for my HD 5770, but that did not hel...

Re: 7850 vs. 7870

Be aware that the problem for us silencers it that most fans have a minimum speed. Bumping the fan to 0% may still run the fan at close 1000rpm + depending on the cooling solution. Yes, I'm fully aware of that fact. My current XFX HD 5770 seems to have a minimum fan speed of "20%", which I believe ...

Re: 7850 vs. 7870

Cheers for the reply. I also noticed the decent thermal performance, so I figured there would be headroom to lower the speed by a notch. I usually make my own fan profiles. Very tempting offer, especially as I don't see myself going higher than 1920x1080 anytime soon (seems the 1GB 7850 cards suffer...

Re: 7850 vs. 7870

I think GTX 660 Ti is a bit too much in terms of what I'm willing to pay. They start at 290€ for me, and the jump in performance from a GTX 660 at 217€ just isn't significant enough to warrant the price gap. The GTX 660 is also an option to consider, true, especially for a dual monitor setup as you ...

7850 vs. 7870

Howdy! I'm possibly in the market for a new video card, which will be used purely for gaming. At the moment I'm using a 2500k@4.0GHz coupled with an HD 5770, so CPU bottlenecking shouldn't be too much of a problem. My monitor's native resolution is 1980x1080. The most appealing options seem to be th...

Re: Silent gaming PC - suggestions?

Sorry to be somewhat grave digging, but have you considered replacing the Fractal case fans? I have the same case, and those are making the most noise in my build as well.

EDIT: I take that back. Turns out it was my 620HX PSU producing a low buzzing noise again...

1.17V wasn't stable after all - I got a BSOD when I tried to run more passes of IntelBurnTest. 1.18V seems better - 50 passes of IntelBurnTest at the maximum setting and closing in on 12 hours of Prime95 without any hiccups. The temperature peaked at 76C during IBT, and 68C during Prime95. I doubt I...

Re: XFX HD5770 1GB Low Buzzing Noise

Thanks ;) This motherboard uses UEFI. I don't really care for mouse support, as keyboard navigation is quicker anyway. I do like the options to that allow you to semi-manually control up to 3 chassis fans as well as the CPU fan if you connect them to the board's headers (obviously). You can't direct...

Re: XFX HD5770 1GB Low Buzzing Noise

Turns it out was the PSU that was loaded with dust. That's a problem with the P180 coupled with Corsair's PSU's which place their fan in an up/down orientation - you can't really clean the PSU without completely pulling it out. I have my new system up and running now - Core i5 2500K /w Scythe Mugen ...

Re: XFX HD5770 1GB Low Buzzing Noise

It's coil whine and not fan noise from the PSU, then? If the latter, replace the fan. It's not that hard to do. Heck, your warranty has expired. You can experiment. If it turns out to be coil whine, you can try putting non-electrically conductive epoxy or RTV on the coils to stop the buzz. I'm not ...

Re: XFX HD5770 1GB Low Buzzing Noise

So I tried unplugging both of the case fans and stopping the GPU fan. Only the PSU fan and the CPU were active. At startup, the buzzing sound was still heard, and since the CPU fan (using a CM212+) only spun at around 300rpm, I'm fairly confident that the PSU is to blame. It's a Corsair 620HX and it...

I'm pretty sure it's the fan. I suppose I could unplug it and boot straight into the BIOS in order to avoid damage. That way, I would be able to tell. Would that be too risky?

XFX HD5770 1GB Low Buzzing Noise

A few months ago, my HD5770 started emitting a low buzzing noise, even at idle (very low load on the GPU and 20% fan speed). I have tried cleaning the card of dust, but it did not help. I have read that it's perfectly normal for this particular card to emit this low buzzing noise, but I find it incr...

Cheers for your input, it's appreciated.

I have done some more research and I think I have settled on the Fractal R3. For the price it just seems like a great value option for a silent build. It also does not have the (to me, at least) annoying separating chambers.

P180/182/183 Successor Without Separate Chambers?

I plan to do a part-upgrade to a Sandy Bridge based system soon (i5-2500k) and I'm looking to do a case upgrade to something that is more friendly to work with and clean. The case should be able to handle the cooling requirements posed by gaming. Currently my setup looks like this: Antec P180 (unmod...
