Re: File server needs silencing

Interesting read, thanks! I hope the server will perform flawlessly. As for the loud CPU heatsink I would get Scythe Mugen 2 and be done with it :) You say that there's a passive heatsink included with the RAID controller? What prevents you from trying it out? I will try the heatsink on the RAID co...

This is an excellent idea. I will try it out. I've read very positive reviews of this software.

Re: File server needs silencing

I don't understand your choices if it's a file server. But if it is really a file server, you don't need to spend more than $0: underclock the CPU (and possibly disable a few cores) and the fan will never need to spin up. Other than that, yeah, replacing the heatsink would be the obvious fix. Thank...

File server needs silencing

I just finished building a file server for a close friend who is an engineer and needs data backup and remote access. Many of my design decisions were determined by the user's needs, so please, keep in mind that I didn't have the liberty to make a fully personalized build. I feel like I haven't done...

Re: Another simple mod

I decided to make another slight modification to the Antec P183 case. My Intel DP67BG has the 24-pin input in a slightly unusual place, closer to the top of the motherboard, rather than, roughly, in the middle. Thus, you have to run the huge 24-pin cable up through the existing cut-out in the mother...

Re: Boring but silent

Three PWM headers is better than average. You can always add more fans using the AC12 PWM daisy-chain feature... True, but the fact that the motherboard has seven 4-pin headers is somewhat misleading. Neither the owner's manual, nor the spec sheet mention anything about it. Intel is clear about usi...

Re: EVGA Z68 SLI

I got the EVGA Z68 SLI to test and use for a new build. I decided to give it a try because of the support for multiple PWM 4-pin fan headers. The board is nice. It's stable, it's fast. It has a very good layout. The I/O shield rocks! However, only three fan headers fully support PWM fans: the CPU, t...

with what fans should i replace the stock ones from Antec P183? SСYTHE Slip Stream ? how many would i need? 2 or 3 i'm thinking of closing top air vent, but maybe i will install one fan inside the case for hdds Yes, to Scythe, either Slip Stream or the PWM version. Re: Best z68 motherboard for fan managment?

Excellent, thanks for this information. I wish this was included in every mobo review. I agree! I am continually disappointed with the fact that only a handful of motherboards support PWM, fully. Speaking of which, I just ordered the EVGA Z68 SLI for my next build. I will test it to see how it comp...

Re: A simple mod

I was a bit disappointed with the cable routing in the present build. I didn't like how the front-panel connectors and the USB3 cable had to run, exposed, along the bottom of the motherboard chamber. I took the bottom out by drilling out the rivets. Then I drilled two cable routing holes, one for th...

Re: Best z68 motherboard for fan managment?

Another strong contender in the fancontrol area is EVGA. All their fanheaders can be controlled independently from the bios, and I assume also by Speedfan. Their boards come with a decent amount of headers too. Another vote for EVGA in Z68. They have PWM technology implemented well on that board. I...

Re: Lian Li PC-B25B vs the Antec Solo 2

I love Lian Li cases! But, I think that the Antec Solo II will be quieter due to its construction. The fans, of course, will also make a difference, but construction-wise, the Lian Li PC-B25B may not be as quiet.

what materials do i need? I used a piece of acrylic 120mm square, I drilled four holes, exactly in the same locations as a fan. You can use a 120mm fan as a guide. I think that the good, old Antec P183 V3 is going to work nicely for you. Consider reading my post http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=62962 for a build that might suit you. The key is not just the case, but also setting up a smart fan and temperature control system. I let my m...

Re: Powerful but 'silent' PC build for image editing + video

So selection of video card is really key to keeping a system cool and quiet! Todays 'gamer' cards are seriously demanding for power and therefore heat. On this build, as others have mentioned, getting a 'decent' video card should suffice and keep the demands down... and subsequently the noise load....

based on this comparison http://www.silentpcreview.com/article1203-page4.html Seasonix X 650 is more noise at 400+ load and i'd like to have more room to upgrade \OC or dual video cards so i probably go with Corsair AX850. It's a relatively small price to pay for a lot of...

It looks like a rather conservative style, which many people will like. There also seem to be enough cable routing options, for a small system, at least. I think it would make a good office desktop PC. However, there's steep competition from Silverstone and Lian Li (e.g., PC-A05NB), and the gorgeous...

I had a similar question. I ended up buying the Lian Li PC-A05NB. It's a beautiful case that is small and very light. It fits a full-size ATX motherboard and has room for at least 3 x 3.5 and 2 x 5.25.
