For what it is worth: I had purchased a Momentus XT 500GB for my laptop, but dumped it because of the horrible resonances it produced (the laptop is a Lenovo T420).

Don't know about other users, but the two 24" Dell ultrasharp monitors we have here produce an unpleasant whine when the brightness is lowered.

Unless you value the mobile features and/or small size of a laptop, it seems to me you can build a decent noiseless desktop with at least comparable performance for a fraction of the cost of a good laptop. And as commented above, a silent, able laptop is a rare thing, if any exist.
