Re: Does anyone have experience with a SuperMicro X9SBAA-F y

the biggest argument against this particular MB is the memory: ECC SO-DIMM. Approximately, the unbuffered DDR3 ECC SO-DIMM cost double compared to the standard UB DDR3 DIMM. Support for ECC memory is one of the biggest advantages of the Centerton Atom, cost is not the issue, for a server data integ...

Re: Does anyone have experience with a SuperMicro X9SBAA-F y

Thanks for your reply. Yes, it's for a home file server and will be running Linux. I'm not fixated on any specific mobo brand, I'm just looking for any mobo with the Intel Atom Centerton cpu, the brand of the mobo is secondary, what I care more about is the features (as I said I would prefer 6 SATA ...

Does anyone have experience with a SuperMicro X9SBAA-F yet?

I'm quite interested in a mobo with the new Intel Centerton Server Atoms (they support up to 8GB ECC RAM and virtualisation in addition to EIST), so far the only board I could find is the SuperMicro X9SBAA-F which seems interesting but I would have liked 6 SATA ports rather than just four, or at lea...

Re: Intel DN2800MT hands on...Single digit world?

I received the following email from a reader of my DN2800MT review , I thought since it contains useful info I might post it here. Please be aware I have not tried what suggested in the email since my DN2800MT is currently in use as a headless server, so I don't know if it works as described! Great ...

Re: Intel DN2800MT hands on...Single digit world?

P.S. Linuxman - in my first post, you are correct, I meant that the display has a native 1920x1080 resolution, but when attached to the dn2800mt with lubuntu (and others except MeeGo) mostly only gives me 1280x1024 (except for the one time I got 1600x1200, which still isn't native resolution). THAN...

Re: Intel DN2800MT hands on...Single digit world?

Hi! I would really appreciate any help on getting the dn2800mt to work under Linux (preferably ubuntu, not MeeGo). My email is phil@philtroy.com. I have a 1920x1080 driver and it only displays 1280x1024 (which is the only fix I need right now). What do you mean by "I have a 1920x1080 driver", did y...

Re: Intel DN2800MT hands on...Single digit world?

I noticed s2ram -f disabled my video output. Do you get the same thing and does that lower the power consumption (I don't have any decent power meter)? In that case, I guess one should suspend and resume after rebooting. There was a BIOS update in the meantime by the way. The documentation mention ...

Re: Intel DN2800MT hands on...Single digit world?

The DN2800MT I received was opened and came with an empty ziplock bag. Did anything useful (cable, adapter, accessory) come with yours apart from the SATA cables and the I/O shields? I got a CD (with drivers and manual, never actually used it as I downloaded the latest drivers from intel.com) a sti...

Re: Intel DN2800MT hands on...Single digit world?

I've managed to get the xorg driver from meego to work in fedora 16 kde spin. I had to patch the original release kernel (not the latest fedora kernel update) to include the cedarview drm module, uninstall the fedora xorg server and drivers and install the meego xorg server and cedarview xorg drive...

Re: Intel DN2800MT hands on...Single digit world?

You know, I always wondered about that. And what you say confirms my suspicions and makes sense: in the case of an IC, "real work" and "making heat" are effectively synonymous, right? Yes (please consider I'm certainly not the ultimate expert about this either but this is what I was told by someone...

Re: Intel DN2800MT hands on...Single digit world?

Not all power draw is wasted as heat; depending on the efficiency of the device, some or most of the power will be doing "real work" (as opposed to just making heat). Actually that's a common misunderstanding. Electrical energy can only be transformed into heat (to be more precise radiation of some...

Re: Intel DN2800MT hands on...Single digit world?

It's surprising how much power the NIC draws considering this is a low-power board by the way. Yes, I was surprised about that too, the difference between having an ethernet cable plugged in with a gigabit ethernet connection established to unplugging the cable is consistently 1.3/1.4 Watts with ev...

Re: Intel DN2800MT hands on...Single digit world?

I have a DN2800MT being tested in the lab right now, but my power measurements differ from yours. The main difference in the gear is 4GB RAM instead of 1GB in yours, and the use of a "level V" efficiency 12VDC power brick. The latter, at full load (60W), is supposed to reach 87%, compared to 85% fo...

Re: Intel DN2800MT hands on...Single digit world?

I beg to differ, netbook (Nxxx) Pineview cpus maybe but the desktop versions (Dxxx) cannot run safely without at least a case fan. I have an Asus AT5NM10T-I which has ...

Re: Intel DN2800MT hands on...Single digit world?

I knew that, my plan is to install a case fan and make it run only if the temperature raises over a certain value, as a security measure. Is it possible to configure the fan "stop temp" in the BIOS? I have no experience with the fan settings as I don't use a fan with this board, but from looking at...

Is it possible to setup the case fan speed in the BIOS like this ? Yes, there are similar setup options in the DN2800MT BIOS, but what do you need a fan for? The great thing about this board is that it runs effortlessly fanless, you don't even need a case fan (unless maybe if you use a tiny case wi...

Re: Intel DN2800MT hands on...Single digit world?

I have now repeated all tests I did with Win7 using exactly the same setup with Centos 6.2. Centos 6.2 doesn't have any specific driver or optimizations for the Cedarview Atom, so predictably it draws more power. The difference varies between 1.5 and 2.4 Watts depending on the specific test, which I...

Re: Intel DN2800MT hands on...Single digit world?

Yeah, your measurements are the best we got. But if you compare them to other people's readings, you take their errors on board. Actually the main reason I did the Win7 power measurements was to be able to directly compare them to Linux power measurements on my setup, so to avoid comparing my Linux...

I tried Fedora 17 alpha too, but since it doesn't come with the 3.3rc kernel it doesn't include the code for the GMA3600 yet, so it boots up fine and starts X but only in VESA mode (idle power usage is 13-14 Watts). I think I will wait for the final release of kernel 3.3 and/or Mageia 2 beta 2, righ...
