Re: is SPCR dead due to technology advances?

I think the decline of this site's popularity happened for several reasons: 1) Less people use desktops 2) Increased energy efficiency = less noise 3) Improvement in quality of PC parts (in aggregate) 4) Improvement of quality control of PC parts (the companies that offered inferior products went o...

Re: My 100% silent music(media)-server + some thoughts behin

I already said this about your original post, and it's still cool. Too bad those images are lost, as they are usually essential for full understanding of posts. You'll be better off to upload the images to SPCR's server; I think there's room enough still for a while. That way, the images will last ...

Re: My 100% silent music(media)-server + some thoughts behin

So it has been a good five years now since I made my little server in a cardboard box and I guess it is high time to report how it worked out. First since I can see the original pictures has vanished here are three pics from back then: https://image.ibb.co/bJvFzw/Front.jpg https://image.ibb.co/hVJJK...

Re: Thoughts on my planned fanless music server?

I wonder if you could store music files on cheaper media such as SD cards. Audio files are usually pretty small anyway, so I wouldn't expect much more latency especially if the computer is smart enough to cache the next file on the playlist. SD cards was a possible way to go but with my capacity ne...

Re: Thoughts on my planned fanless music server?

Thank you for the comments and suggestions. - The Silverstone case is crazy expensive. is there an alternative I have not spotted (one with similar chimney like properties)? Maybe I should build something myself - tips? Get something easier to cool and you'll have a wealth of affordable/cheap cases ...

Re: Thoughts on my planned fanless music server?

Seems like a sensible solution. Notice that if you remove the frame for the optical drive there is only one drive bay left (the 2.5" under the motherboard area). Of course, SSD's don't need such secure mounting - heck, you can tape one to the case just fine... I think this would not be hard to cool...

Re: My 100% silent music(media)-server + some thoughts behin

Thank you all for the kind words and creative thoughts. I too have been looking at the red button and considering what to do with it. One thought is to go all military on it and try and give the whole case a look with grey camo paint, decals of some sort, fake rivets and some labels around the butto...

My 100% silent music(media)-server + some thoughts behind

This isn't the most advanced build as such but I still think some here could maybe get a kick out of seeing it. But first a little background info  Since 2005 I have been running a Slimserver music server on a G4 Mac Mini. At first it was making due with the internal storage and only on when I...

Re: Will this foam from PSU box help dampen sounds? Or hurt?

Alright so if I just add an ESD bag underneath I should be fine? I think I'll keep the HDD the way it is regarding orientation as it's only 34C temp. With the foam + bag I should be 99.9% safe right? I am all for reusing stuff but in this case I think you may wanna reconsider. Apart from possible e...

Re: Spinning down hard drives

Did you check Windows Search/Indexing Sevices? In my experience opening any sort of file dialog might make Windows start all drives. Also typing a web address in IE or having windows shut down/sleep/hibernate! It seems to haven gotten better with the later Windows OS versions, especially Win 8 but ...

Thoughts on my planned fanless music server?

I'm planning on building myself a little server and before I pull the trigger it would be most welcome to what thoughts you all may have on the project. Planned hardware: Motherboard: ASUS E45M1-I DELUXE http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_CPU_on_Board/E45M1I_DELUXE/#specifications PSU: PICO 120+AC...
