Re: how noisy are typical commercial desktop systems?

Very interesting MikeC. I should have prefaced my post by saying I was new to the whole silent PC thing as only recently did I have the epiphany that computer noise is really annoying...

Re: how noisy are typical commercial desktop systems?

It depends... I typically order Dells for baseline systems/most normal customers. They tend to be very quiet and pretty much every desktop (Mid tower) use generic ATX power supplies now (they used to be proprietary). However, watch out for the "slim" models (for instance the Inspiron 660s), which ar...

Re: HTPC that will eventually be upgraded to Gaming HTPC

So as an update, I continue to be very happy with the current setup. I installed a copy of W7 Home Prem I had and tried to stress the processor running Prime95, HD YouTube videos and finally HD Netflix Streaming--and the max temperature I hit was about 42-43C, when ambient was about 22C. MB Temps we...

Re: HTPC that will eventually be upgraded to Gaming HTPC

So as an update I started building the machine. I have all the parts except the damn RAM (thanks Newegg). Will take some pics yesterday but holy crap it was my first time with an ITX build and jeez are those boards small. Very happy with the whole layout though. One interesting thing--ended up getti...

Re: Small quiet HTPC for Music and Movies

Yeah I am wondering if I might do better with a uATX setup--definitely cheaper than the ITX and really since it'll likely be sitting in the same place the actual footprint of the machine being a bit larger may not make that much of a difference...hmmmm so many options! The problem is that those uATX...

Re: Small quiet HTPC for Music and Movies

Thanks for the replies guys. Since this machine isn't really going to be used too intensively I was mainly looking at the older stuff. I just don't want to go too cheap/old haha. Moreover the only AMD based mITX board I can see available from my usual searches (here in Canada) is an FM1 board but is...

Small quiet HTPC for Music and Movies

UGH! How did I know that reading this forum would make me want to build other projects as well! As some of you may have seen I am going to be building my new main machine using parts outlined here: http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=65144 (I hope to build it this weekend). Thi...

Well I can definitely side with you on that one. No sense in having things looking good if you're constantly a behind the action haha

Re: HTPC that will eventually be upgraded to Gaming HTPC

Saunamies, thanks for the extra info. I ended up ordering that Samsung kit. I'm glad to hear that the integrated graphics can pack such a punch. Should be fine in the short term! I ended up ordering all the parts yesterday-- makes for a great (Canadian) Thanksgiving when I get an email Saturday morn...

Re: HTPC that will eventually be upgraded to Gaming HTPC

That Thermaltake might be just what the doctor ordered. Now to just find it--especially in Canada haha.

I'm just anxious for this case to show up for sale--was supposed to be the end of September but as far as I can tell no word yet...

edit: do you guys have any preference for the low profile RAM?

Aha! Now I get it. Yeah why not really I'll stick with it. Maybe actually contribute to the board instead of just mining it for into haha

Re: HTPC that will eventually be upgraded to Gaming HTPC

Thanks for replying so quickly. I will certainly switch up the RAM (which honestly I probably gave the least amount of thought haha), and good advice to just leave out the card entirely for now. As for the SSD--again good point. I did forget to mention that I have a 120GB SSD that I was planning on ...

HTPC that will eventually be upgraded to Gaming HTPC

Hi all, Been lurking this forum for a while and lots of helpful advice all around. I wanted to run a few ideas past you guys. First, my goal with this rig: initially will be on strictly HTPC duties, but eventually next spring I will buy a decent video card. The reason for waiting is that I basically...
