Re: I have really bad whine from my Seasonic P-520FL

I've had two of these PSUs. The first had a bit of buzzing - nothing extreme but it was there. The second has no buzzing at all... so perhaps there's some variance with them, or maybe they revised the design a little?

Re: CPU cooler on GPU (super silent cooling)

Don't think that's not crossed my mind  but unfortunately it would have no chance of cooling a GPU, as TDPs are usually MUCH higher in the 150w range for a midrange card.

Re: CPU cooler on GPU (super silent cooling)

The cooler is mounted using just a steel plate, which was actually the side of an old PSU and was cut to fit using tin snips, with holes drilled in the right places for the screws. The standoffs you see actually came with the cooler, so they are designed to be the right height with that particular c...

How to make a graphics card quieter using sponge

Okay, so after my previous experiment , I found out a way to reduce fan noise somewhat using some sponge! It basically removes any vibration noise the fan makes, though this is only a problem in certain situations. With my case and GPU, the difference after the mod was genuinely quite profound, but ...

Re: CPU cooler on GPU (super silent cooling)

Hmm, using a liquid cooler sounds like quite a good solution actually. I'd rather avoid them though, because of the pump noise. Regarding the pics, I've disassembled it for now as I'm waiting until I get a better card to mod. The video is HD though, so you could pause it and have a pretty good view ...

CPU cooler on GPU (super silent cooling)

Hey everyone, I've done an experiment that I think will be of interest to a few of you :) One of thing with graphics cards is that they usually use more power than CPUs (often TWICE as much), but their heatsinks are not very efficient at all. The air is just recycled, rather than blown out of the ca...

Re: silencing hard drives

I was actually trying to describe the sound that would be emitted from a HDD if it was suspended by elastic, rather than the air actually absorbing any of it. The air would, I presume, help a tiny bit with heat, but I'm not sure on that. Anyway, what are your thoughts? Could it be effective?

silencing hard drives

I've recently been wanting to silence my HDDs as they're currently the most audible component when my computer is idling. I've been going through this article and I've had an interesting thought. Would it be possible to make an enclosure with sides that are effectively heatsinks, and top, bottom, ba...

Re: External Control Hub (the ultimate in silent computing)

It's not so much the cable quality than the cable length. You ought to use an active USB cable with a length no longer than 3m. Solves any problems that might occur with cable length, and results in very solid reliability. Power wise, I wanted it to turn on and off with the PC, so a separate power s...

Re: External Control Hub (the ultimate in silent computing)

Ahh, I see now. All of the devices I used were USB 2.0 devices, so using a USB 3.0 cable for its higher speed wouldn't have been necessary for my particular unit. I see no reason why it wouldn't work though. How long is your USB 3.0 cable? It's worth noting that a USB 3.0 cable has a max 'recommende...

Just curious... what do you use all that space for? I've got a 2tb HDD, and it just never seems to fill up!

External Control Hub (the ultimate in silent computing)

external control hub_MatthewPerks.jpg Hi everyone, I've finally finished the build log of my 'external control hub', which works in tandem with my silent wooden PC . The unit provides remote access to all the ports and devices that would otherwise be on the PC itself, meaning that the PC can be els...

Waiting eagerly. Are you opposed to giving us a little write-up preview? Not really, it's just that it'll take time away from making the actual video. I'll be covering every little thing in the video though, and it should allow me to explain things a bit more clearly than otherwise. A build log is ...

Re: wooden case with optimal airflow (my first silent PC)

Hmm, yeah.. I wish I could get hold of some of that air cond. filter that cheap here in the UK. :| Looks like it would be perfect. On the picture the angle seems to be higher/lower than 90°. This is the important part. Why? If it's okay at vertical, and okay horizontal, then it's going to be okay in...

Re: wooden case with optimal airflow (my first silent PC)

Well sure, pantyhose. :) Anything reasonably strong while thin and resembling net/mesh will do well. Like insect net, but not the ones with too tiny holes in it. One could find thin metal mesh at some hardware stores I guess, if really sturdy material is desired. http://s9.postimage.org/m5gxsojlr/m...

Re: motherboard swap win 8 pro

You should be fine. If there is a significant change in hardware, sometimes Windows will ask to be reactivated, but I don't think changing the motherboard for one of the same type will be a problem. Regarding BIOS, try and make sure the hard drive settings are the same, as some changes can cause win...

Re: wooden case with optimal airflow (my first silent PC)

Presumably the big fans are rotating quite slowly for maximum silence. You didn't mention components; I chose components for minimum wattage in my latest build (e.g., Ivy Bridge!) so as to have fewer watts heating up the box. But you mentioned overclocking, indicating your priority was speed rather...

Re: wooden case with optimal airflow (my first silent PC)

I had no idea that a case such as the FOrtress FT02 existed, haha! I do think mine's still more efficient air flow wise, however ;) I can understand your question. I actually didn't originally plan to have it up in the cupboard, though I had always planned the ECU. Having the case up in the cupboard...

wooden case with optimal airflow (my first silent PC)

I've been a lurker on these forums, but this is my first post, so greetings :) I've always been averse to the noise PCs usually make, and always endeavoured to make something really quiet. So I recently built myself a wooden PC, with a more efficient airflow than a typical ATX case. Nothing new for ...
