Re: Improve X4 845 stock cooler and make it silent

The Thermalright Macho 90 would work. I just got a be quiet Shadowrock LP and it looks very nice but I haven't got the computer together to test it yet. It has a 120mm fan but it is still only 75mm tall. RAM clearance depends on which direction you mount it in. Being so much larger than the cooler y...

Re: Big vs Smaller Cooler for i5-6500

Those SPCR results are quite old and while some things haven't changed, there are some very nice new products. For Black Friday I was looking for a good low profile heatsink at a low price. I looked at a retailer and the choices below $40 were not that many and most of them looked like poor designs....

Another old horizontal HTPC case: mATX and i3 Skylake

I need a low power computer for working at home. I like to keep things separate from my HTPC and don't need very powerful hardware but I want to use the same monitors and keep it in the same stereo rack so I'm going to pull out another surplus Accent HTPC case and put in a Black Friday CPU/motherboa...

Re: Which cooler for s1151? Will my Scythe Ninja SCNJ-1000 w

Exactly. If I wasn't so cheap I would have all Noctua heat sinks. If Scythe hit the price point they claim and the availability was consistent, I would give them a shot. If you are that bad at business I'm going to avoid you. I wound up with Thermalright for my last because it seems like all 92mm to...

Skylake e hasn't been released as a Xeon, high end desktop CPU or anything. There might be engineering samples floating around somewhere but I can understand if Intel doesn't want to discuss it with gamers.

Re: Which cooler for s1151? Will my Scythe Ninja SCNJ-1000 w

I don't quite understand the SPCR infatuation with Scythe. In the US I see some pretty spotty availability and high prices. The only top flight heat sink brand with good availability I have seen is Noctua but their prices are higher than a price gouged Scythe. I am surprised that so many companies w...

Re: NH-D15 or smaller cooler??

I intend to boost performance with fast ram and NVMe SSDs. I figure that should do as much as over clocking with only a modest increase in power consumption and heat (compared to slow ram and SATA SSDs). The price is high but good, cheap, fast: pick two.

Re: NH-D15 or smaller cooler??

All of the i7-6700K reviews with overclocking I've seen (but one) used a liquid cooler. So, there isn't a heck of a lot of data yet on temps with air coolers. The only data point I have is a brief mention at Techspot: Keep in mind the ambient room temperature was just 21 degrees and we were using t...

Re: Need 80+ PSU for Half-Height HTPC - New Styles Not Worki

If you look hard, sometimes you can find new old stock 80+ silver or gold Dell PSUs with 80mm fans and about 230 watt rating. Research is required because some have oddball motherboard connectors and usually they are missing things like PCIe 12v connectors. The wires can be short too. If you don't m...

Re: Horizontal desktop quiet gaming rig

I got Corsair Vengeance LPX which has a low profile heat spreader. It has an impressive XMP profile at 3200mhz cas 17 and would probably over clock if I tried. You would need a heat sink with really bad clearance to have an issue with them. I bought the RAM because they were on sale but they worked ...

Re: HDDs for 4K Video Editing - Drive Suggestions?

Intel had a 4k video editing demo at IDF. With a regular SSD, the editing was slow, around 10-15 fps. With NVMe Intel 750, editing was at a smooth 24+ fps so you could verify the output as you were editing and really didn't have to wait. You could get by with HDDs but anything on SATA is going to be...

Re: Horizontal desktop quiet gaming rig

Saying a 16nm (or 14nm) process has some 20nm features is true but its the metal stack and metals are so bad below 50nm that you don't want to shrink them. The secret sauce is the fin fet. It greatly reduces leakage current which means lower TDPs. In 20 and 28nm planar processes, to get speed you ne...

Re: Semi-passive 12l build with a discrete GPU

I think your actual power draw will be lower than that. According to my Kill-a-watt, my i7-6700k draws about 134 watts at the plug in Prime 95 and less than that in Furmark with a GTX750 (non ti). I have a Rosewill Capstone 450m 80+ gold PSU, nothing too fancy. That's still high for passive cooling ...

If the motherboard is anything like my Z170x Gaming 7, the fan control is still bizarre. Just pick fans that run slow and quiet... The Gaming 7 costs $30 more but it has support for faster ram, probably more power phases (22), upgraded audio, dual NICs, and some other nifty features that do not effe...

Re: Semi-passive 12l build with a discrete GPU

First about CPU TDP, that's not really about how hot it will run but about when it will throttle itself. A low TDP CPU will just throttle with less load. I think it is an interesting question to think about two cores vs four cores both with four threads when power throttling. My gut instinct is that...

I kind of understand this after reading about the Fury Nano pricing at $649. That price is just too high to tolerate poor reviews. I don't know what AMD is up to but the poor availability of Fury cards together with this high price is making it hard to buy when I know 14nm GPUs are around the corner...

I have never seen the case but now that it seems settled, look at your cupboard. Cases work best in open air with plenty of cool air available and room for the warm exhaust to rise away from the computer. Your cupboard is probably going to mess that up. Before you worry about fans in the case, you n...

Re: New matx case advice

For 1080p gaming, an i5 should do fine. mATX boards are much more common for Skylake at this point but wait a while and mITX will have plenty of options. Cooling isn't a motherboard issue as much as a case issue. There are some mITX cases that do pretty well, some do poorly. Noise is the tricky thin...

Re: Planning a new system build

I haven't tried that yet.

The good news is that Dell seems to care about making a quiet computer and their 80mm fan is not bad.

In my suburban apartment, the noise floor is fairly high so I don't notice it.

I'm trying to get to a quiet place and I might start fooling with the fans then.

I might be a little closer to the situation due to my job. A lot of the time old circuits are re-used in a chip because the engineers do not have the...
