Re: overwhelmed by options for gaming PSU!

Try to be reasonable and sensible. The likes of Corsair are bribing reviewers and Youtubers to lure people into the superstition that they need to go for a premium PSU rated no less than 600W. In reality, as long as you use a Skylake i5 CPU and a Pascal GPU up to GTX 1070, you don't really need more...

Re: RX 480 Review Compilation thread

Even with the triple-fan design, the fan speed is around 2100 rpm , which is utterly terrible. According to Techpowerup, the calculated power consumption during typical gaming sessions is 177W, which is even higher than that of GTX 1080, 163W. https://www.computerbase.de/2016-07/asus-radeon-rx-480-s...

Re: Windowed mITX cubic gaming build

Noctua U9S seems to be a sensible choice for a Skylake i5 CPU. I like Noctua coolers because their mounting system is very sturdy and fastens the heatsink properly, not to mention their quality fans. I tend to recommend Scythe Big Shuriken 2 for budget-oriented builds but their "acrobatic" mounting ...

Re: GTX 1060 Compilation Thread

It seems like MSI Gaming X is easily the quiestest GTX 1060. MSI strapped the same cooler/heatsink onto their GTX 1060 and GTX 1070 whereas Palit seems to have massively downscaled and even degraded their cooler/heatsink for GTX 1060. Re: DAW on a Budget

You don't need to be a traditionalist because some recent chassis with fancy windows (which you don't have a liking for) indeed have decent airflows. For example, Corsair 400C, Corsair 400Q, NZXT S340, all of them accommodate two 140mm fans on the front, which I think is an essential feature for goo...

Re: GTX 1080 Review Compilation Thread

Thanks for sharing your personal experience but our discussion so far has been centered on "AMP Extreme " rather than "AMP". From the viewpoint of a silence-aware user, the seemingly meagre heatsink of "AMP" expectably leads to such a poor cooling performance. Be careful with the new Zotacs AMP card...

Re: DAW on a Budget

Your planned build is one of the easiest in the realm of silence-seekers because you don't have any graphics card (the culprit of noise), nor any HDD (second to only the former). The total power consumption will never exceed 100W. Thus you can go for any decent PSU. For future-proofness, just buy on...

<joke> Regarding your choice of TJ08-E based on the SPCR review, if I may, please do not have too much confidence in the SPCR review because there have been many excellent new chassis in the market thereafter. Re: SPCR inspired [quiet] build

Contrary to our expectations, as Lodestar said, there does not seem to be sufficient amount of information regarding their performances, which somehow reflects the fact that most people are not that sensitive to noise. As I mentioned in other posts "multiple" times, the best cards at the moment in t...

Re: Quietest GTX 1080 - Fan vs water

To the best of my knowledge, the best way to achieve the minimum noise is to remain with air-cooled conventional graphics cards. As you mentioned, the size of GPU fans indeed matters a lot. Even 1-2mm difference makes a substantial difference when it comes to GPU fans, thus silence-seekers prefer bi...

Re: Compact mATX case recommendation?

You are looking for a chassis whose market segment (non-cubic mATX with <25 liters) is practically being abandoned by manufacturers. Hence there are very few options. You could consider Bitfenix Prodigy M or Phenom M (>>25 but reasonably small) or Raijintek Styx. I'm satisfied with my Raijintek Styx...

As a digression, if your monitor is 1080p (1920x1080), I highly recommend you to consider buying a 1440p "IPS" monitor. IPS matters a lot due to its accurate color reproduction. If you have an iPad or iPhone, you can have a rough idea of the vividness and fidelity of an IPS monitor. Most modern comp...

Re: GTX 1080 Review Compilation Thread

The gigantic triple-slot cooler/heatsink solution of Zotac GTX 1080/1070 AMP Extreme looks very promising as long as you can fit one of them in your chassis (it's regrettable you can't). This card could potentially be THE quietest GTX 1080/1070 card in US market. I suppose Palit/Gainward GTX 1070/10...

I second all the points made by CA_Steve. As a digression, I would have bought one RMx PSU as a spare one at that price. Grab it instantly. Re: First GTX 1060 european official pricing seen on web

It is pointless to blame Nvidia. They are simply maximizing their profit by all means, and it's capitalism. It does not matter how much they have been overcharging/overpricing their cards. I would rather blame AMD, who is completely failing to prevent the monopoly of Nvidia. I had very high expectat...

Lodestar, I'm genuinely impressed by your subtle observation on the fan direction of Palit 1070/1080 cards. For ease of calculation, GTX 1070 is 3/4 of GTX 1080 in terms of CUDA cores. GTX 1060 is 2/3 of GTX 1070 in terms of CUDA cores. Since the base clocks are lower in lower versions, you should expect that GTX 1060 performance is no more than 67% of GTX 1070, whose performance in the same way cannot ex...

A Short Review of Palit GTX 1070 SJS: Unprecedented Silence

A short preface: I have the impression that, with the advent of incredibly power-efficient Skylake CPUs, and literally "static" SSDs, hence noiseless, the era of silence computing has finally come. My main computer is almost silent, apart from the faint noise of CPU fan (Noctua NF-F12 PWM @ 400-600 ...
