Re: Considering a new build. Suggestions are most welcome.

Excellent advice guys! Things seem to be working better now. To me its just that the fan is running in the extreme quiet zone, FanXpert is pretty good into predicting fan behavior but there are multiple samples and in some cases it might evaluate the fan way to close to the stop, i would just bump t...

Re: Considering a new build. Suggestions are most welcome.

Thank you all for your answers. Sorry for the late reply. Been busy all week with work. This is an Asus motherboard. The fan is not hooked into CPU-OPT. It's hooked up to chassis fan 2. I checked the BIOS and all the fans are set to minim 200 rpm. All the settings are Auto, so I have not chosen PWM ...

Re: Considering a new build. Suggestions are most welcome.

I wonder if something is wrong with some of our fans. We started looking at this like you suggested Abula. Messing around with this, my wives back fan stopped working. We changed it out for one of mine and that spun just fine. That made me think something was wrong with her fan. I tried her fan in m...

Re: Considering a new build. Suggestions are most welcome.

I have a problem I hope you can help me troubleshoot. As you know I built two identical PCs. One for my wife and one for myself. My wife's PC behaves very well. I hardly ever hear it spin up its fans. Mine, on the other hand, spins up the whole time. We both started playing Divinity Original sin 2 t...

Thanks for the advice! I just ordered the Silverstone SST-ECM20 PCIe card. Hopefully, the quality is OK. I think it actually fits two M2 cards. One SATA and one PCI.

Re: Considering a new build. Suggestions are most welcome.

Good stuff. Ordered the fans. They are taking their time getting here. I encountered another problem. I only see one of the Samsung EVO 850 M2 SATA cards in the BIOS. After some research, I found this little piece of information on Asus website about M2 support. https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/PRI...

Re: Considering a new build. Suggestions are most welcome.

Seems there are two versions of the fan.

http://www.scythe-eu.com/en/products/fa ... 0-pwm.html

Quiet version 300rpm - 800rpm
Regular version 300rpm - 1200rpm

Just get the regular version to match the CPU fan?

Re: Considering a new build. Suggestions are most welcome.

It is not. The case fan that came with the Fractal Design C. The CPU cooler is the one that came on the Scyth Mugen. What is the significance of the fans not being the same? If this is a problem, it seems I can either buy a Case Fan Y Cable OR I can just get another fan like the one on the Scyth Mug...

Re: Considering a new build. Suggestions are most welcome.

So I've finally started the build! Been kind of busy here so have not had much time. Turns out that the Thermalright fans did not come with screws. I had to order some that I am waiting for. (Just a heads up to others who might order the same fans). A small update on the CPU. I could never get the i...

Re: Considering a new build. Suggestions are most welcome.

Well this was something that should have been considered before buying the motherboard, there are options from all manufacturers with WIFI. Also its best to always have the PC conected via RJ45 to a wired network, faster, safer etc. I didn't buy the motherboard yet, so I could change the build on t...

Good stuff Abula! Will get a WD Red then :)

I meant to ask something else as well. What do you guys do for Wifi? The motherboard doesn't have wifi. I'll probably run some cables, but I thought it would be nice to have the wifi option as well.

I have about half the parts gathered up now. The wife has discovered that the build only contains 1TB of storage, and now she wants more for her movies. Not quite sure how to address this. I feel like I am going backward looking into hard drives, but for big storage, they are still hard to beat $ fo...

Okay! Will get two new fans then.

Quick question about the CPU cooler. There seem to be several versions of the Mugen 5. Does it matter which one I get?

Started buying the parts now. Turns out my wife wants this build y'all recommended instead of a laptop, so I have to get two sets.

I'll leave the "spend gfx money now or later" argument for you to solve :) Thanks, Steve! About the ram. I never understood why it's a good idea to buy a ram in pairs. The one I got is listed as OK by Asus to be alone. Getting 2x8 now limits my maximum to 48. Anyway. I know to take advice when I ge...

Re: Considering a new build. Suggestions are most welcome.

CPU: Ryzen 7 1700 will work. Somewhat overkill for your games. An alternative is the Intel i5 8400. Costs less, tends to do better than the 1700 in gaming tests. I am starting to get the feeling that the Intel CPU i8400 might be better for me. That CPU really stands out as good value for the money....

Re: Considering a new build. Suggestions are most welcome.

Regarding CPU you might save some money by getting an R5 1600X instead. You don't need the extra cores and will have a little more cooling headroom for overclocking. Thanks for the tip on the CPU and monitor, Olle. I've never overclocked anything, so I am not sure getting the R5 1600X adds much for...

Re: Considering a new build. Suggestions are most welcome.

There's always a couple of ways to get to a quiet solution. Everything else being equal, at idle, the loudest component will be the sum of the case fans (gfx card fans turn off at idle these days as do many PSUs). At load, the loudest component will always be the gfx card. An open case, like Abula ...

Thank you, Steve and Abula! This is a lot of information to take in! I had a look around for monitors. Considering a new build. Suggestions are most welcome.

Hello SPCR, Thank you for a great forum! I am intrigued by the idea of trying to build my own silent PC. I am hoping for some advice on picking parts to match my needs and wants. If I decide to go ahead with a build, I will look at it as an opportunity to learn something new. My experience PC tinker...

Cabinet sizes

Hello! First post here. I just started looking into building my own silent PC. I was curios to see how big these cabinets were and how they compared so I created a few 3D model of some of the cabinets I see popping up in discussions here at SPCR. Since I might not be the only one wondering about thi...
