20-pin ATX plug for 24-pin mobo? PicoPSU questions.

I'm considering buying a PicoPSU as it's recommended, but I'm wondering why almost all models they have seem ancient. They have 20-pin ATX connectors and often floppy drive connectors, no 4-pin CPU connectors, only one SATA. The descriptions on the mini-box website mention support for CPUs such as P...

Re: Modern mid- and high-end fanless laptops?

That's very helpful, thank you. Do you think NotebookCheck's search will list all laptops available on the market that meet the criteria or perhaps some models may not be listed on the site at all or some of their features such as presence of a fan may not be? Once I have some more free time again I...

Modern mid- and high-end fanless laptops?

Let's make a list for anyone looking for a laptop that's fanless, but still reasonably powerful and good quality. I'll define modern mid- and high-end laptop as one that has a CPU that was released in 2019 or newer (10nm process or smaller) and that has a passmark score of at least 4000*, 11+ inch 1...

Which motherboards allow for underclocking and/or TDP-down?

Which motherboards or chipsets (if all motherboards with a given chipset do) support undeclocking to lower heat production of the CPU? I'm mostly interested in Skylake and Kaby Lake (LGA1151) motherboards, but also Haswell (LGA1150). Alternatively, which motherboards support the TDP-down feature int...

Is there a heat difference between different 35W T CPUs?

Fe. does a Coffee Lake Celeron produce the same amount of maximum (CPU stress, GPU not taken into account) heat (for the heatsink to dissipate) as Coffee Lake Pentium, Haswell Celeron and Haswell Pentium? All of these CPUs in their 35W T versions. If not, how big are the differences, is it something...

Re: How to lower brightness in Linux to eliminate whining?

Klusu, this works pretty well, although it changes colors somewhat which isn't ideal and also completely doesn't cooperate with redshift (blue light reducer) which disables the brightness change every 5 seconds, if I run it in infinite loop it will just flash bright light at me every 5 seconds. I wo...

Re: How to lower brightness in Linux to eliminate whining?

Any idea how to do this on Debian 9 with GNOME? There's nothing in /sys/class/backlight. There's no xorg.conf or xorg.conf.d in /etc/X11. Doing xbacklight -set 50 does nothing. Same if I put Section "Device" Identifier "Intel Graphics" Driver "intel" Option "Backlight" "intel_backlight" EndSection i...

Re: Arctic 12 Passive with non-T Celeron G?

I can also buy 35W Ivy Bridge Celeron G1610T or Haswell Pentium T. I can buy another non-fanless heatsink and use it without a fan.

What I want to know is how much do the T versions differ thermally and if this heatsink can cool them adequately.

At least two PCI expansion slots. I'd be grateful for as many recommendations as possible. Price is a very important factor.

Seriously, fans and ATX PSUs in a proffesional studio in 2018?! If you want to do audio work and care about the sound quality. When I have my ear next to the back of the case (where the power cord goes) I hear loud coil whine. In comparison to 90-120W laptop bricks it's louder and much more rich in detail, laptop br...

Re: Semi-passive PSU effectively fanless in a 160W machine?

The case is Cooler Master Elite 110. Sometimes with a fan or two, sometimes without any, even on the CPU, if Celeron G will be used, I'll put Arctic Passive (or another passive heatsink if there are any you recommend) on it.

Use case: NAS, ZFS, occasional extremely heavy torrenting.

Semi-passive PSU effectively fanless in a 160W machine?

I'm looking for a semi-passive PSU that I can be sure will always stay fanless in my machine. The machine will be sometimes running without any fans, so PSU's temp may be higher than with fans. The most power hungry it can ever get is this: Pentium G 54W 2xDDR3 4x3.5" HDD 1x140mm, 2x80mm fans mini-I...

Go for Akasa Euler (cheaper than HDPlex) fanless case and a full power (not T) recent i3. You'll have more performance than with a NUC for a smaller price - a price similar to the one of a normal, loud tower pc - plus fanless and tiny. Seriously, I've done it.
