Seems like I'm just talking to myself in this thread . I updated my second post here to include the pictures as I discovered a free image hosting service ( http://imageshack.us/index.php ). I think I may abandon the rubber box idea and go with Kostik's idea of wrapping the drive in foam. Someon...

I wrapped the 40" cable with Al foil and then used electrical tape over the foil. This homemade shielding seems to be working well so far.Vikroda wrote:... My longer cable must be picking up stray RF noise. Either I'll have to live with the shorter cable or figure out a way to shield the 40" cable.

It's been a while. I moved my computer to the other side of the wall *, which made it essentially silent, so I haven't modified the set up for a long time. However, I recently bought a Maxtor 250 GB SATA drive. I was expecting the performance to be better than with my cheap converter board. The read...

Thanks. The dimensions are: 4 3/4" wide, ~7.5" long, and ~2 1/4" tall It's a little longer than my other box, the same width, and about 1/2" taller due to the heat pipes. It would fit fine sitting on a piece of foam in the bottom of the case (I removed the drive cage). I suppose if you wanted to fit...

Vikroda, nice work there! I like your design. Have you any room at the bottom of your computer case, where you could fit the enclosure with/onto some foam? 8) Umm, the reason I used a 40" SATA cable was to remove the drive from inside the computer. (Currently, my other rubber box w/o heatpipes is s...

The first picture shows the external drive sitting next to my computer. The red arrow points to the SATA cable. (I deleted some messy cabling in the upper left side of the picture.) The 2nd photo shows the drive lifted off of the bottom rubber part. (I used a different SATA cable for this photo, hen...

External Rubber Box w/ Heat Pipes and SATA
External Rubber Box with Zalman ZM-2HC1 and Serial-ATA to Ultra133 Converter Board I finally got around to ordering the converter board to allow me to attach my noisy 180GB WD HDD to the SATA port on my Asus A7N8X Deluxe motherboard. I also bought a 40-inch SATA cable so I could move the drive outsi...

I found a cheaper way to do the same thing, assuming that your motherboard has SATA. SVC has a 40" SATA cable for $3.50 and a SATA to Ultra 133 converter board for $30. If you have an old external case you can use that for the power supply and then build a rubber enclosure to dampen the sound. Howev...

HighPoint e.SATA external HDD enclosure
I just read a review on Tom's hardware for external drives. The HighPoint units will let you use your ATA drive externally but will allow connections via SATA for higher performance. The connection between the computer and HDD is through a standard firewire cable so you could move your HDD about a m...

Anyone know anything about this? Link to SVC The page says something about drilling a hole in your case.
I wonder if this could be combined with a rubber box to reduce the sound.

I think I paid more for the ballast (~$15) than the drop down fixture and the high CRI (color rendition index) tubes I bought at Home Depot. I bought the electronic ballasts because the magnetic ballasts were causing an unacceptable flicker and not because of the sound as this was in my garage. Ther...

Hmm, I'm torn.... Toshiba 5002 is $210 and has excellent media compatability; the Pioneer A05 is twice as fast, but has can't read the plus formats and is less capable of handling weak sectors and media, at $250. I bought and returned my Toshiba. I was turned off by their policy of not releasing th...

This PSU definately solved my stability problems that have been plaguing this system since I've been using the Antec PSU from the Sonata. After installing the Fortron, all problems are now fixed! :D All this and silence as well! What a bonus! The warm air coming from the back PSU vent is no warmer/...

Re: It isn't actually melamine
Now that I've seen these tiles -- they are not actually melamine! Melamine is a thinner, less expensive plastic laminate product that is used on the insides of many kitchen cabinets, similar to the stuff that is used on many countertops. The skins on these acoustic panels is a sort od fiberglass, a...

$hipping
The $11.95 includes a set of silicone fan isolation mounts ($4 at Silicon Acoustics, less at McMaster-Carr: $10 for a pack of 20), a 3 to 4 pin converter (~$0.50 at SVC), and a built-in thermister to control the speed ($?). So the price seems a little more reasonable; however, the shipping for one i...
