Re: Cleaning TRUE?

Compressed air is the way to go. Be thorough, and it's fine. I've always cleaned computers at my shop this way. Sometimes I remove the fan first, but unless it's really bad, I don't bother. I've been quite pleased with my Metro ED500 DataVac, which, despite the name, is a motorized air blower rathe...

Re: Mounting bracket for 2.5" SDD in Antec Solo

I'm not sure about what's your actual problem, but are you looking for something like this ? Yes, something like that, with 2.5" mounting capability and 3.5" mounting holes on the bottom. This looks like it should work although I don't understand the purpose of the internal socket, that seems point...

Mounting bracket for 2.5" SDD in Antec Solo

I purchased my first SSD (Crucial M500, though I doubt the problem is related to the brand) and, without taking a close look, assumed any old 2.5"->3.5" mounting bracket would do. Unfortunately I purchased one which only had screw holes on the side for mounting to the case, which doesn't work with t...

Re: External thunderbolt gpu's becoming a possibility??

If you're willing to run cables to the GPU, why not just put the entire machine in another room and keep the monitor/keyboard/mouse with you? The keyboard/mouse can already be wireless (maybe range issues) and soon enough the monitor too, so you might not even needs cables at all.

Re: A10-5800K vs. Phenom X4 965 for non-gaming use?

As to the $150 comment I went with the ASUS M5A97 which is more of a $80-$90 board when I upgraded the last time. Adding new DDR3 memory bumps it up some. But it looks like my AM2+ cooler will work on the FM2 form factor if I go that route. Either way I'd be comparing prices on the 65w and 95w part...

If you are using your old AM2/Am2+ motherboard keep in mind you can use a AM3 cpu but it will draw more power than it would in an AM3/AM3+ motherboard due to they way the power planes and pin control for power states are setup. I didn't know that - thanks. Is it objectionable purely as a heat/noise...

I'm considering upgrading from my current Athlon X2 5000+ and wondering if folks have any insight into these two processsors. My use is primarily editing / software development / video playback / web browsing on Linux - no gaming to speak of. CPU benchmarks seems pretty comparable and while the buil...

Making PSU replacement in Antec Solo easier

I'm going onto my 3rd PSU in the same Antec Solo case (stock PSU: burned out; replacement: gradual fan bearing decay -> too noisy). In this case it's a colossal pain to swap in a new PSU, because the fixed rail design means either the CPU heatsink, or the entire motherboard must be removed to make a...

Antec is having a sale through March 27th - I just scored a B-stock Solo for $49 + tax. See here on their website (regular merchandise also discounted, but I'd rather pay $49 for a Solo with a few dings than $79 for one without).

Re: Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H overclocking memory of its own wi

Legend has it that the divider logic would always underclock your memory if it could not get the exact speed so it is curious that in your case it is overclocking. I would have expected (in your case) a BIOS setting of 800MHz to cause the CPU to use a divider of 7 = 371MHz = DDR 742. It may be that...

Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H overclocking memory of its own will?

I recently started having stability issues with my ca. month-old GA-MA78GM-S2H system. Running memtest86 turned up a few hundred errors on one module; reseating it in a different socket helped for a bit, then I had to pull it. Yesterday the one remaining module started acting up as well. Finally I p...

They are about equivalent. NVIDIA has better driver support. For AMD 780G I couldn't even find drivers anywhere to download, not even form AMD's website. Also NVIDIA has better support for Linux and Windows 2000. The latest Catlyst drivers should work fine. I'm using Catalyst 8.8 on Ubuntu 8.04 and...

Bit of anecdotal evidence: running Ubuntu 8.04 with the Catalyst 8.6 or 8.7 drivers on a 780G motherboard, I reliably get hard system hangs running Xine using the Xv driver. Really hard hangs - have to power cycle the machine. OTOH the AMD drivers correctly recognize the resolution of my Dell 2005FP...

I picked up one of the SA0825FDB12L variant from Central Computer here in San Jose yesterday. What's up with two-pin fan header on GA-MA78GM-S2H?

My Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H (rev 1.1, I'm pretty sure) has got normal CPU and SYS FAN headers. Then it's got a header labelled "NB FAN" with two pins (it can be seen here , just above and to the right of the PCIe x16 slot). What's up with this? Some sort of special Northbridge fan you can only get fro...

Usually you would mount the fan so that it blows through the heatsink with the greatest velocity. You can certainly do it the other way, though it may not cool the same. However, you want to avoid going against natural convection when possible. Hot will rise and you want to keep that going in your ...
