Re: Advice/timing on an mITX work+gaming build
Thought about the Mini, but at that point the footprint/volume isn't hugely different than my existing P180 build. I'd probably just hold out longer with the Q9550, or go for a significantly cheaper stop-gap ATX build & reuse case and PSU.

Advice/timing on an mITX work+gaming build
I've been running a Q9550 system in a P180 since 2008 as my home work (software/firmware development, some scientific computing, and a bit of game development hobby) and gaming machine. It's seen a switch to SSD, a small RAM boost, and a few different GPUs since then (8 GB & GTX 960 now), but it's g...

Re: Anyone with a M350 enclosure and Noctua NH-L9i CPU coole
Just put a Asrock H270M-ITX/ac with a Noctua NH-L9i into an M350, and it does seem like the thumb screws are just touching the base. Tried sweeping a bent staple under the screw and couldn't get it to pass. Hopefully not causing a problem, it seemed like the motherboard was sitting flush on the moun...

Re: PicoPSU for a minimalist i5 ITX box?
Thanks. For your build, did you just plug the 4-pin into half of the 8-pin, or are you using a 4-to-8 adapter? Guess another option since my only storage is M.2 would be to get their PATA molex to 4-pin cable for a couple dollars.

I've got a Fractal Node 202 containing a pretty minimal ITX pfSense router/firewall box: - Asrock H270M-ITX/ac (Wi-Fi disabled) - i5-7600 (65W TDP; meant to get the 35W TDP 7600T but missed that while googling it led to the T proc on Amazon, the link to NewEgg was plain 7600, should have wondered wh...

So when they say "3.5 HDD x2, Slim ODD or 3.5 x1", does that mean you can have at least two 3.5 drives, and an ODD or third 3.5 HDD in addition? Or does it mean you can only have one 3.5 HDD if you're using an ODD?

Lovely looking case. Clean aesthetics, good cooling, full featured in terms of internal 3.5 and external 5.25. Just wish someone would do the exact same thing but lop off ~13cm from the depth, skip the ATX/SFX PSU and go with DC-DC.

Re: SilverStone FTZ01: Mini-ITX Fortress
Sleek, really nice looking case. Doubt I'd actually use it for a gaming machine, but my old HTPC (in an Antec NSK2400 MicroATX case) has been acting up and will likely need a replacement soon. This looks like it might be a great way to shrink to an even more living room-appropriate Mini-ITX footprin...

5.25" external bays aren't just for ODD. They also allow for external hot swap docks, a good feature for desktop cases. I'd never buy a desktop case without a bay.

Looking for mITX cases just a little bigger than a Streacom
Looking for a compact HTPC case that will fit two 3.5 inch HDs, plus a (full size or slot load) DVD player, and a quiet but capable HSF (Noctua NH-L9i, Scythe Big Shuriken or Kozuti), and a 92mm or 120mm case fan, and is designed for use with a PicoPSU. Thanks for the heads-up about the Q9550, it does seem to be replacing the 9450. The GTX260 does match up with the 4870, looking at Anandtech. For fans, I'll have a Nexus 120 that I'll use as the exhaust fan, and will have the unmodded PSU fan venting the lower chamber. I do need to decide on a fan f...

Questions on a development/encoding/gaming build
Hello, I'm putting together a new build for software development (Java, C/C++/C#, Delphi), video encoding (MS-DVR commercial removal, compression/re-encoding), and gaming. It will be a fairly robust system, and is based on a lot of the recommended parts here, but I'm hoping for some community feedba...

I was in basically the same situation, HTPC to SD CRT over S-Video. I went with the Gigabyte 690G mATX board, it includes a TV bracket for S-Video and Component connections, in addition to the standard VGA, DVI, and HDMI. Paired it with a 45W AMD BE-2400 X2. It worked great. I've since upgraded to a...

Tower or desktop case w/ hot-swappable HD bays?
Are there any PC cases available that offer hot-swappable access to at least some hard drive bays, and that support large-diameter fans so that a low-power backup server could be made fairly quiet? There are rack-mount options, but I don't have a computer rack, and they all use tiny, noisy fans.
