3 years is nice, but I do think that there is some value in the extra 2 that seagate is offering. I for one am still using a more than 2 year old wd1200jb as a primary drive for my workstation. In all likelihood I'll still be using it in another year, and it would be nice to not have to worry about ...

In my experience the answer to WD whine is DIY carving rubber enclosures. The single catch is that the enclosure has to have good thermal contact with the drive (which means thermal paste + tight construction) in order to effectively dissipate the heat. Two drives in this type of enclosure typically...

Well, I think I get where bluefront's coming from. The two cases where I think muffling can be thought to be crucial are 1) when performance/other attributes trump the value of an individual components silent alternative (For example, I love the heat dissipation characteristics of the 9600, but ther...

Jan, that test is a near perfect test of whether aluminum cools better than steel when used as a case material. The simple truth is that when used as a "normal" case, its better conductivity is of no advantage. It's like painting racing stripes on your car and expecting it to go faster. Bad analogy...

Hmm. I don't think it has PFC. I searched through my order history @ newegg and found it's actually a 300watt model: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDe ... 979&depa=0

I do wonder just how bad it is to unplug the fan while it's running. And I should admit that I have done so and haven't yet expereinced any problems. I don't make a habit of it though. I've never had a problem UNplugging a fan, but I did toast an older p3 mobo by plugging in an 80mm L1A while the c...

Buzzing fortron PSU? It's not even turned on!
I have a 350watt fortron psu with 120mm silenx fan. When the computer is turned off it makes a slightly audible buzzing sounds. what's up with that?

well, got my evercool alum 120mm from directron today and I love it. at full throttle it's obviously a monster, but at 3v it performs very well and starts everytime. There's definitely airflow noise to contend with, but it's fairly subtle. Using speedfan, I've found my sample requires a minimum of 2...

Ok, well the samsung spinpoints are starting to look good. I like the performance advantage of the hitachi (particularly the faster actuator), but I don't relish the idea of spending all my time trying to silence the meowing noise that reportedly occurs every 10 minutes. I looked on newegg, and noti...

Hmm. a quiet "true power"? That's odd. During the course of modding my 330watt 2 fan whisper PSU, I removed the 92mm fan from the bottom and used speed fan to see if maybe the thermistor that controlled it was just giving it too much power. I don't remember much about starting voltage or observed co...

Well, I went over to storagereview and according to their results reliability for samsungs was quite bad (although there were less samples for the samsung brand than most of the others). The drive that just failed for me was also pretty low, ~20th percentile, while the WD1200jb was a solid 85. Still...

Over the weekend, my maxtor DMP9 (160/7200/8) died. It killed my folding productivity for the entire day, managing to lockup windows while I was gone. Anyway, my own experience with maxtor (including a previous DMP9 catching on fire) has brought me to the point where I can no longer justify using th...

My primary noise concern is HD whine (not seek noise, which is most effectively reduced with decoupling). This may actually become even more of an issue this week as I look to possibly moving on to scsi. Anyway, the muffled intake in conjunction with acoustic shielding on the inside of the case seem...

Hmm, well after a second look I see your point that this is an entirely different beast (from the cookiejar). As I see it, there's a likely compromise made between ease of construction and noise reduction. It's still an excellent case idea for uses with relatively quiet components (eg: hds that aren...

The Nordic Review makes this thing sound pretty good (certainly quiet), but it only tested the thing with a single CPU. I wouldn't even bother going to watercooling for a CPU only solution, and it's capacity to cool larger loads has yet to be demonstrated. http://www.nordichardware.com/reviews/cooli...

Cool stuff. I recently did the 45degree mount w/a shitake mushroom jar from costco. I like the idea of making this more compact than the cookiejar mod, but I've got to imagine the recirculaitng air (around the HD) will inevitably cool less than fresh room temperature air. Regardless, the 45 degree m...

You might need more ram, though this would probably manifest itself most when loading new levels in games (i used to show up to RTCW maps a good 45 seconds later than everyone else when I was running low on ram and the machine had to swap). The other possibility is that your hds are running excessiv...
