My experience with the NEC ND-2510a has been really great, it's very quiet both reading and burning. Just about any ambient noise will drown it out. It's dual layer capable, comes in beige or black, and Newegg carries it right now for $65 plus 1.99 shipping (well, if you want beige.) Sadly, the firs...

Having bought one of the no-frills versions of this case back in that fortunate Newegg burst (i.e. no HD selector or silicone gaskets, but with the side-bezel mounted sound/USB ports) I can say that the case is quite nice... firm construction and excellent style... but, personally, not worth the exo...

Aopen AK79G-Max and SMART... need help!
Hey folks, Just got the above board (nForce2 w/ built-in everything) and an OEM copy of XP Pro (w/SP1.) I've been playing around and getting familiar with XP (haven't upgraded an OS since 98SE) and installed MBM5 and DTemp. MBM5 works fine, but with DTemp I ran into an issue. For some reason, DTemp ...

You bring up a good point that I neglected to be specific about. My current case (a garrish Apex full-tower) has one feature that's actually usefull; a mobo tray that, while not removable, swings out the right side (when looking at the front) of the case. Originally, I replaced the stock sink with t...

Migrating a Mobo to a New Case...
This seems like a silly question... but that never stopped me before, so... I just got my X-21 Trinity from newegg (i'll write more about it in the appropriate thread, if anyone is interested in my thoughts) and in preparation to move my equipment into the case, I had a question; is it necessary to ...

I don't know what to say about that case. It doesn't strike a chord in me, but I know several who would love to have something other than the standard beige box. (Hence my recent hasty ordering of an X-21 Trinity.) I like that people are willing to stretch the boundaries of what a case should look l...

Well, after pretty much no deliberation whatsoever... Newegg now has a little bit more of my money than they had before. In the last hour or so, I've read multiple reviews for the X-21 (well, the "Full-Featured" version, anyway) and the only real downside I have consistently seen is that front intak...

temptation... :) The thing that concerns me about the X21, as MikeC mentioned concerning the Neo Classic, is the airflow intake from the front of the case. Does anyone have pictures (or the capability to take/post pictures) of the case with the bezel removed? And what does the bottom-front of the ca...

I'll make this brief. There's nothing that ruins a board for me faster than a troll out looking for shit to stir. Thusfar in my experience, SPCR is the ONLY forum in which I have yet to experience that. Seems to me that silent/quiet computing is a different stage of geekdom than just getting the hig...

AT style PSU modding?
Here's a question I came across while replying to a different thread. I have an old warhorse Pentum 166MMX which runs as my firewall/gateway/server yadda yadda. Now that my newer computer is close to silent, I noticed this old dog is noisy. The main culprit at this point is the ridiculously loud AT ...

Evercase 4252 Questions
Okay, it's late (for me anyway) so pardon me if this post is slightly incoherant and/or just plain stupid... I was looking at pics of the Evercase 4252 and it's "Screwless locking devices" for the 5 1/4" and 3 1/2" bays, and I got to wondering. Those seem great for CD/DVD-ROMs and floppy drives... b...

Alistair (or anyone else who's performed the mod) did you lose the use of more than one PCI slot in the process of installing the NB32? As I understand it, that first slot next to the AGP shouldn't be used anyway, but in my very similar situation (ATi graphics card with a loud fan that is, NOT the s...

Personally, I thought it was a wonderful idea, but what I don't understand is why he didn't go the full route and build a better cockpit to go along with it... or buy some even-more-specific peripherals? He couldn't have spent all the money on the 13(!) monitors and 9 systems? (That thought still th...

Saw this on slashdot, thought those of you who don't frequent that site might find it humorous, particularly considering the topic of interest here at SPCR.

Of course, I made the realization earlier that I'm looking at spending $20+ for a 'sink that I'll only be able to use on this card... ...a card that I can get for $50 on Pricewatch (possibly less on ebay) ... Maybe I'm just cheap, but I think I'm going to wait until my Panaflos get in, and du...

Thanks for the replies, folks... I need all the help I can get! I vaguely recall a Tom's article that remarked it was strange the AIW-Radeon had a fan, and that it might be there for looks. Long time reader, first time poster :D - ( finally I have a reason, however miniscule it may be! "I made it Ma, top of the world!") I just installed an FSP300-60PN power supply (quiet, beautifully quiet.) Next up is the SLK800 sitting next to me... However, the new noise champion of my system is the...
