Cooling an Opteron 165 - Stock HS vs Arctic Freezer 64 Pro
This is by no means a thorough investigation, but I wanted to share my results when I switched from the stock Opteron 4-heatpipe cooler to an AC Freezer 64 Pro. I don't have any of the fancy equipement that the SPCR reviewers have, so all my comments regarding noise levels are qualitative. I'm runni...

As for alternatives, let's see... how many watts of electricity can a hamster running in a wheel generate? I know an adult on an exercise cycle can generate around 70 - 100W... A friend of mine has rigged up a sytem to use while she's riding her recumbent excersie machine. She's got a 17" LCD mount...

What motherboards are you guys using to undervold your Bartons? I looked into undervolting mine, but my ASUS A7N8X-X (NForce 2 chipset) won't let me. I wonder if I write ASUS if they'll add it in their next BIOS release?! I use the SOLTEK FRN2 board - it's the best budget board I have ever ow...

Dropping slightly in speed you will be able to drop voltage to ~1.3V very quickly. Heck, I'm able to get my Barton 2500 to 1.3V *at* stock speed - temps are 40/47, case is ~25, using a modded Silent Boost with an L1A at ~6V (fanmate)! Mind you, I do have two L1A case fans at 6V that are blowing coo...

According to this site , a square inch of solar panel can generate app. 45mW of energy (providing the sun is shining!). So, to generate 300W, you would need 300/0.045 = ~6700 square inches of solar panel. A 6' x 8' solar panel, measuring ~6900 sq. in. in area would generate 310W of energy. If you ad...

Living in Vancouver, I know both companies. My experience with NTCW has been limited to a few phone conversations - they were out of stock on what I wanted and were not very helpful in helping me out. I'd stay away from them. Fronet, (frontier PC) on the other hand is an alright company, they have p...

Yeah - I have the standard version of the Noblesse case - it's a nice looking case, and can handle 2 80mm in the front and 2 in the rear. It doesn't have the best airflow through the front of the case, but that doesn't matter as I have reversed the fans in the back to blow in. It does look really ni...

Idle time? What's that? Is that the few seconds that my computer has when it's just finished folding one WU and is downloading the next?jojo4u wrote: Disconnect is needed in order to save energy during idle time.

For those of you worrying about HD performance for gaming etc, I don't think you are going to notice a difference between an IBM HD and a Cuda. I know that the benchmarks will say one thing, but those are under stressing conditions. A game doesn't exactly stress an HD! I'm able to watch some pretty ...

The problem is that I've seen acetone eat through entire motherboards .. I can't really risk that :?. However, I will use that as my last option. You're right - acetone can chew through PCB if you're not careful. What I'd recommend is to use a Q-tip that has been wetted with acetone, and then rub t...

Survey: AMD Chip Temps with 5V Fans
Hey all - I'm considering getting a new AMD chip to replace my Palamino Athlon 1600. It currently runs at 58deg while folding, with a 5V L1A on a Volcano 7. Since I'm trying to kill the noise, I'd like to stay with a 5V L1A on the HS. Just looking to see who has gotten what temps with their T-bred o...

My new rig - OR - how I blew my last paycheck...
As I am sharing an apartment next year, my computer is moving into my bedroom, hence the need for uber quiet. My previous setup was a XP1600 with a Volcano 7, 512MB RAM, 80GB IBM HD, Pioneer DVD-105, LiteOn 32x12x40, Radeon 8500DV (AIW), all on an MSI KT3 mobo with an Enermax PSU and generic case (a...

Well, I have the Enermax EG365-VE, and did MikeC's mod , and my fan never spins up. The exhaust is warm to the touch, just like Mike promises! Well, the first thing I would do is stay away from Thermaltake. Their product lines are either for mainstream or overclockers, and not useful for quiet. I've modded my Volcano 7 with a L1A panaflo, but that's only because I'm too cheap to get anything else ;-). I'd get a Thermalright 800. As for the...
