Re: New SPCR design & management
Thanks for the notes & thoughts, guys. I really do appreciate it. As I take the content strategy forward, I plan to preserve as much of the content and identity of the site as possible. I can tell you guys are a passionate bunch, and I can appreciate that. I can't speak to Mike's side of the deal, b...

New SPCR design & management
Hey everyone - My name is Eric Carrell, and I've recently acquired SPCR from Mike Chin. I'm super happy about taking the reins of this site/blog/forum into the future. :) I started with a redesign; I think the old design ran its course and it needed some freshening up. I hope you guys like it; there...

Yes, we need the newer ones, or the connectors don't line up. We need four of these, because the ones we have are the older style. I'm making the assumption that the second generation ice-pack is removable. Anyone? Here's a visual of the type needed: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?Drive...

Toshiba MK6022GAX 5400/16mb Notebook Drive
Reviewed today is the MK6022GAX, the highest performance notebook drive in Toshiba's lineup: A 5400 RPM, 2.5" drive with 16 mb of cache. It surely performs, but does it plumb the sub-20 dBA depths or remain in more audible >20 dBA territory? Here's our acoustic report on the Toshiba MK6022GAX. http:...

Posting Rules: MUST READ before posting!!
I'm sure that many people have noticed the explosion of the SPCR userbase, which has led to the explosion of these forums and other forms of support. In an effort to keep forums relatively organized, I have setup several guidelines: Use common sense - Just because it isn't explicitly stated as one o...

Thanks for the feedback. Couple of comments that I thought I'd throw in:  Browsing problem when using Mozilla. The site has mostly disabled right clicking on links. I use Mozilla (and it's slimmer brother Phoenix) on both Linux and Windows and have no problems right-clicking anywhere on the si...

Posting Guidelines; Dial-Up Users Beware: Big Pics
This forum allows readers to post pictures of their silent/quiet PC projects. All new posts in this forum should contain pictures of your silent PC project, along with a brief description. (or, a detailed description, depending on how in-depth you want to get). Comments about specific PCs should be ...

Re: "Quiet" HSF review
what's your guy's opinion on silent Heatsink reviews that DON'T include noise readings, I agree with you in that a lack of noise readings limits the value of an article. However, keep in mind that accurately measuring noise is Really Hard, especially when you start getting into the <30dB range. Tha...

bit-tech has a Project Logs forum. This is pretty much exactly what I was planning to do with SPCR. Also note, their Article Discussion forum, which is for discussing articles from the main site. I actually like this idea for our articles, rather than stuffing everything in Site Feedback. Might imp...

Regarding the "Gallery Thread" idea, if I'm understanding this correctly, it would be one thread that contains all sorts of projects in it, each of which has a link off to a separate discussion thread in another forum. Why not just create an entire forum dedicated to projects? Each new post in the f...

Slightly OT, but Kurt, when is the new server arriving? <Crossing my fingers>This week</crossing my fingers> Just to set your expectations, however, once it does get here, it's probably going to go through several weeks of building and (mostly) testing to work out all the bugs. We learned some less...

Folks -- I see two ways we can do this. Create a new forum, let everyone post and reply there and trust people to keep things on topic. Create a new forum, restrict posting to mods only. Then, for folks who want to post pictures for their rig, they can post in the test forum, PM a moderator and ask ...

Total silence is luxurious and not possible to have. Total silence, at least with respect to personal computers, is absolutely possible to have. Whether it's accomplished through moving the computer into another room, or building a sound-insulated chamber, there are ways to achieve it. You can argu...

there are standard ATA PC Card Type 1 at 1GB now. cost is a bit over $600 USD. OEMs also sell notebook form-factors (i.e., 44-pin IDE connector instead of PC Card interface). these may go higher than 1GB, but i'm not sure. Right -- the IBM microdrive. Anyone heard anything regarding their reliabili...

So, if I moved it I would need: -Long video cable Make sure it's a quality video cable -- video signals can degrade over long distances (10ft+) so it's important to get a cable that will carry a signal with minimal loss. You should expect to pay anywhere from $30 - $200 for this cable. If you see o...

Re: Screw quiet, I want silent
Ahhhhhhhh! I'm gonna need: -Silent LCD monitor -Solidstate hdd -VIA C3 -Fanless PSU with no transformer hum ~£1k :( I think you forgot to add "a pony". :) The easiest and cheapest method of getting a truly "silent" computer is to simply move the computer into another room. You'll have to pay a bit ...
