OK, do you know what bad blocks are, and garbage collection, and block erasing, wear levelling, etc. The controller on the SSD has to take all these into consideration, which determine what it's doing, and where the data lives. So without detailed information on how a specific SSD actually works it'...

I'm not totally sure what is limiting a SSD, but here I'm guessing it's the actual reading/writing to the memory chips. The big difference between the two is that the SSD is not limited in the way the HDD is: theoretically it can read and write data on mulitple places at the same time. If this is t...

As for G45, I don't think I'm going Intel at all. Intel don't seem to carry desktop CPUs with a TDP lower than 65W. Have you looked at the Celeron's, particularly the slightly older ones based on the Conroe core (420, 430, 440). They're single core, and rated at 35W. Or go with a C2D and fold for S...

I have recently got a Q9300 (45nm 6MB, 2.5GHz Quad), and it's running stock speed (I have no luck overclocking with the Gigabyte P31-DS3L), but at 1.15V (I think) rather than 1.25V stock. Temps are around 58 to 63°C for each core, measured with CoreTemp. I'm running it with 2 SMP clients and the af...

Do you have an Ethernet connection on the PC? I think that folding@home needs one, and Linux will have the loopback device by default. Windows probably doesn't, so either trick it into having one, or hook up an Ethernet cable to a switch.

The Atom is designed to be more for the embedded market. The fact that the range will cover a range of speeds and power usage is due to the idea that it's scalable. So at the lower end the chip will be aimed at ARM processors that are used in most mobiles, opening up the world of x86 code to run. Sc...

What about putting one or more of the drives in an external enclosure - eSATA or firewire for better performance than USB.

Otherwise, if it's going to be a server, then get whatever is good and hide it away, plugging the laptop into the TV when HTPC functionality is needed.

Re: shut down RAM or VPU through software/bios?

My main computer is a server that I use remotely most of the time so if I could just turn off 2 or the 3 RAM sticks I could lower the noise and heat dissipation (and power usage) of the computer by a lot. Can it be done? It would depend on the RAM controller whether it can selectively disable some ...

you should also keep in mind that using a gigabit ethernet card would nearly starve the (32bit 33Mhz, I assume) PCI bus The older PIII of nomoon's would have 33MHz PCI, so this would be an issue. However more modern motherboards with PCI2.2 and later will be able to run at 66MHz if all PCI cards su...

Another tip which wasn't immediately obvious to me was to keep the car in gear (high gear) when decelerating and braking until you almost stall. I had naively presumed that coasting in neutral would use less petrol, but it seems that that's wrong. In neutral the engine management system needs to us...
