I'm for reviewing speakers, as long as there is some selectivity as far as what is reviewed. SPCR doesn't review every single fan, power supply, heatsink, etc.; the ones they do review seem to be ones that might interest the "silent PC enthusiast" crowd. I find it interesting also how a particular t...

Just a quick note for those in the U.S. thinking about buying from the sample sponsor, Anitec.ca: "All prices in Canadian dollars. Ships within Canada only."

You want to raise the speakers off the table top. The proximity of the drivers to the flat surface is bad for sound -- causes all kinds of reflections. This is why angling them up helped -- it reduced the reflections off the desk. I suppose that's the inherent problem, that speakers in general won'...

Mike, are the bottoms of the A2 flat? I'm thinking I'd use a piece of laminated MDF to use as a base, then having the A2 sit on the MDF with a little Blu-Tack or something similar to make it stick. Then perhaps have adjustable machine screw legs with sorbothane feet (or spikes if you're into that wh...

Shoot, just when I thought I'd lost the itch to buy a pair of the A2 speakers, here comes Mike with a nice article about them. These seem like they'd make a neat addition to a low-end DAW, perhaps in a portable laptop-based system. I hope if those bases/stands are introduced later, you'll do a follo...

Computer setup opinions

Here's my long-winded opinion: When you buy something ready-made from a big dealer like Dell or Gateway, you will likely not have any control over the main sources of computer noise. Most of the noise from a PC comes from either fans located on the CPU heatsink, chassis intake/exhaust and power supp...

Requirements?

It might be useful for you to give us a few specifics: 1. Price maximum 2. Software and program usage: Are you using a specific program for your recording, such as Sound Forge, Cubase, etc.? Do you require Windows 98/2000/NT/XP? 3. Hardware usage: What kind of microphone do you have, and do you plug...

Pick a sound card for applications

I'd suggest choosing a soundcard by how it will be used rather than a raw comparison of PCI noise, bad drivers, etc. Most good soundcards will not have any of the problems you mentioned; by good, I mean those intended more for audio workstation usage than for gaming, such as the Echo, M-Audio, DAL, ...

ATC-710: some comments

While I am a proud owner of a 710 (grey/black), I must warn you about a few things before you buy. I'm sorry it does not address your inquiries regarding the lack of a reset button and HDD LED; I've never found that to be terribly problematic: 1. There is a VERY small tolerance between the door of t...

Do they work? Probably.

Chances are that it works to some degree; as they say, your mileage may vary. I'd guess that since it doesn't decouple the fan entirely from the case (vibration still transmits through the screws), they are only really effective with unbalanced fans that cause significant vibration in their enclosur...

Stock Intel P4 Heatsink: Modify? Throw away?

Greetings SPCR readers, What do you do with the stock P4 heatsink/fan? As indicated in the SPCR recommended section says: "HSF supplied with retail P4 is good performer. The fan is too small not to be whiny, but at reduced voltage (~7V), provides good cooling and reasonably low noise with pretty fas...
