Unboxing Boxed P4's?
I'm a Athlon guy that am thinking about building a P4 system for a friend. I figure one of the 800MHz FSB systems with SATA and a P4 will give better performance than I can acheive with a Athlon Barton. (Side note: Anyone got any thoughts/links on that one?) Since I'm not used to building with P4's ...

Quiet graphics card with high-q 2D and TV-out?
I need a graphics card with top-notch 2D and TV-out quality but 3D is less of an issue (I'm not much of a gamer). Of course it needs to be quiet to match the rest of my system, perferably without any fans at all. Anyone got some proposals?

Dell Latitude portable noisy?
Time to get new portable and I need a good and silent one. My employer prefers Dell. Anyone got experience with the new Dell Latitude D Series? Are they noisy? Especially the Dell Latitude D800. Are there any Dell portables that are exceptionally silent/quiet? Personally I'm a bit reluctant to go fo...

Thanks for all the answers; great info. Yes, this will be on 24/7 so I think it'll be ok. Running linux on it as web server and backup server for my other computers. Yes, this is Sweden so its Celsius. Even here -20C is not common but it can happen. So HDD might be the most problematic but since its...

Moving it outside: Will water condense and ruin computer?
As an experiment I've moved one of my computers into the attic. I canät hear it anymore and it will be cool enough but since temps can go down to -20 here in the winter I'm a bit concerned about water condensing on the electronics. Anyone got experience with these things. I guess its the amount of w...

Thanks a lot. Seems that people are having some problems with these boards. Then again maybe only the ones with problems end up in the boards and maybe its the same for other brands... ;) Looking at the pictures of the AK79 again I see that the northbridge heatsink looks pretty large and close to th...

Experience with AK79D-1394, SP1604N, Thoroughbred 2400?
I need to build another silent/quiet computer. Since I haven't been following the SilentPC community for a while I'd appreciate if anyone has personal experience with any of the below listed components or if you can propose (better) alternatives. I've already got the rest of the components and they ...

IBM 180GXP or Seagate Barracuda IV?
I have a Seagate Barracuda IV 80GB and I'm very happy with it. Silent and no problems. Now I need more room and IBM 180GXP seems to be even quieter at a somewhat better price (here in Sweden at least). Anyone have tried the 180GXP? How noisy is it? Have you heard the Cuda IV and compared? Any info a...

ASUS A7V333 w Socket-A, USB 2.0, FireWire and RAID. VCORE can be set in range 1.10-1.85Volt but lowest is 1.75Volt from Bios then you have to use undocumented jumper settings on the board. Default VCORE is 1.75V. I've been running my AMD Athlon XP 1800+ at 1.50V@133MHz without stability problems. 1....

50 may be a bit high unless we can get together. Any more Swedes here? ;-) Do you know what the shipping costs for 10 fans would be? If I can find the Panaflos for around $3 and then ship 10 of them to EU for about $15 or so this would be feasible. Anyone have pointers to dealers in US/Canada with g...

Needs to be a pretty "soft" wall or it should simply reflect most of the noise? MikeC: Why do you seem to consider mufflers to be inelegant? (Or did I misunderstand you?) Even if you learn to tune your fans (which I consider I have by now) there might be benefits with using mufflers since they can a...

Thermally controlled fan control circuits?
Anyone got pointers to good circuits for thermally controlled fan controllers? I found the one at www.heatsink-guide.com/tempcontrol.htm and it seems very simple. Downside is that it won't enable RPM monitoring which I think is important if you still want to know what is going on. Anyone found simpl...

Papst vs Panaflo: cfm at low voltages?
I have a Papst 8412NGL. It makes a clicking noise so I haven't been able to use it as intake or exhaust. However, by modding my PSU and having the Papst blowing into the air intakes on the PSU and removing the PSU fan the clicking noise is not audible anymore. However, there is quite a lot of turbul...

quokked: So did it work or not?
Don't understand if you mean it worked or not. Worked on one and not on the other? I bought some really cheap 3cm (1.2") thick sound damping foam for cars. Its not bitumen based and light. Only attached to top of case and in unused 5.25" bays so far but it seems to make a small difference. Even thou...
