Experiences with Aerocool VM-101 and FX5900 Ultra

I thought I'd report my experiences from installing an Aerocool VM-101 on a Gainward FX5900 Ultra Golden Sample , one of the most power hungry video cards available today. Gainward has its own dual-fan single-slot cooling solution. Loud as hell, but supposedly quieter than nVidia's reference cooler....

But then, I use the Kinesis Contoured keyboard, and am a bit fanatical about it. http://www.kinesis-ergo.com/images/classic.jpg Neat. I especially like the beverage cup space in the middle. Stick in a straw and you don't even have to stop typing while sipping the caffeine laced drink of your choice.

I've replaced the stock fan with a Artic Cooler, so I'm guessing it'll be void? Ouch. Replacing the cooler breaks the warranty all right. I still have the old cooler, reckon I could get away with it? The ethics of it aside, I guess you don't have anything to lose by trying. Chances of getting the c...

Sounds dead to me. I guess your warranty is still good, since the card is fairly new. The sooner you return it to the store the sooner you get a replacement.

You can't just compare the used wattage. According to the article the problem is that some nVidia cards use a lot of 12 V. So even if a system uses 200 W and have a 350 W PSU, it might not work properly because the PSU can't deliver 12 V enough. That's why a 450-550 W PSU is recommended for these c...

Having a CPU burn out is pretty unlucky but graphics cards go wonky all the time. Apparently it's cheaper to accept RMA for 10% than to make sure that the things work properly in the first place.

If God wanted to get ME off the computer He would send an angel to blow in my ear.

Aerocool HB-101 HDD cooler

I don't suppose this new HDD cooler does anything much for noise, but it might be just the thing if you have low airflow around the drive cage and don't want to add yet another fan:

Not only is it heavy but it is tall. The torque it exerts on the mobo and CPU must be tremendous. At a guess, maybe 10 times higher than a Zalman 7000Cu.

My understanding of reading the (slightly outdated) noflushd webpage is that *all* writes are deferred in RAM until RAM is needed for non-diskio-related purposes (e.g., real work). Writes are committed when a read that cannot be satisfied from in-memory cache requires that the disk be spun up anywa...

I prepended all my /etc/syslog.conf entries with "-" (no sync) That shouldn't help much. The new log entries should still get flushed to disk all the same, albeit with a slight delay. Does noflushd do some magic to delay asynchronous block writes if the disk is spun down, or what? At least frequent...
