How whiney and high pitched are the 15k drives? I'm considering getting one... even though my WD 200gb JD is fast enough
As for the fans... I use a 120mm Panaflo L @ 7v and it's quieter than the WD's idle noise, but I don't know if that'd be enough airflow for you.

I had similar but not as harsh situation happen with an Enermax 350w and a Epox 8kha+. The PS simply couldn't handle the load on the +5v rail and instead the MB tried to draw more current from the 5v rail in order to make up for the sagging voltage... which caused the heat buildup in the connectors....

Gonna be getting a new CPU, MB, HS
CPU: AMD64 XP3000+, already decided. HS: I'd really like to use a Thermalright XP120 heatsink. I've got a SilenX 120mm which I like a lot, and the two should make a very good pair. Now for a MB. I dont want SLI, and I don't need a whole lot of features either. Just stability and overclockability ;) ...

I get a similar "pulsing"... to me it sounds like a high frequency squeal or whistle, only lasts for a second or two, but can keep on doing it for a while. I think it happens between accesses as well. I believe I narrowed it down to my WD 250gb SE SATA, but I can't run that drive by itself to verify...

On my near silent rig, a p2 400 @ 448 with an Alpha p60f120 (or something like that) passive heatsink, 384mb RAM, Samsung SP1604N, I needed a 80mm Panaflo L @ 5v to keep my FSP 300w cool. It ran just a bit too hot for comfort. Otherwise the CPU handles the heat fine, but the HS is MASSIVE with a ton...

From my experience, a Samsung SP1604N with Nidec FDB is a very quiet HD. I've got it sitting horizontally, with a 2" wide "band" of foam surrounding it. There's also a piece of eggcrate in front of the drive (between the drive and the plastic front bezel). The computer's underneath my table, and wit...

I tried both PowerDVD XP and WMP10, both skipped. All 1080i clips would skip, some 720p's wouldn't skip though. I just tried the VideoLan player, and it's great! :D No more skipping! On this one, 1080i clip, bout 10 minutes long and 1.5gb, it's averaging 95% CPU utilization, but no skips :) Thanks a...

Need CPU/MB that's good with High Def/TS streams
Currently my Mobile 2500, even when overclocked to 2.4ghz (200x12) with 1gb of ram @ 400, and a Radeon 9600 NP or a Radeon 9800 Pro 256mb couldn't play HD streams smoothly. I'd always get choppiness even @ 2.4ghz. My friends P4 3.06 (533fsb) played them flawlessly, even though my CPU should have out...

What's kinda cool is the HD has a black top finish, while other HD's onyl have a normal silver metal top. Mine was produced Feb.1, 2005. I saw some other WD's at another store that had the standard silver top finish. I'm assuming those are the older stock and may not have the current decibal rating...

Well the machine has been running for the past month or so, but with Win2k, and not as a router, just as a rig that runs all the time. The P2-400 @ 400 runs fine with the big fanless Alpha P60120SBE heatsink: http://www.alphanovatech.com/c_p60120sbe.html I'm using a Toshiba 6021GAS in a small closed...

Toshiba MK6021GAS 60gb 4200rpm 2.5" my thoughts
Here's what I could find about it: 4200rpm FDB motor with 2mb cache. Read/Write/Seek power consumption is 2.3/2.3/2.6 watts Sleep/Standby is 0.1/0.25 watts I haven't bought a 2.5->3.5" HD adapter yet, but when I do I'll definetely give the drive a whirl. I wasn't able to find noise specs on it. It w...

I think it's going to happen! (Silent Router Box)
I'm planning on building an as close to silent as possible router box. So far, it's got a Gigabyte BX440 based slot1 MB with a p2-400mhz underclocked to 266mhz. 2x128mb of Samsung -GH PC100 ram. The PS is a Fortron 300w (originally a 20pin unit) with an 80mm Panaflo L @ 5v. The CPU has a wimpy stock...
